Impaired locomotion is a frequent and major source of disability in patients with neurological conditions. Different neuroimaging methods have been used to understand the brain substrates of locomotion in various neurological diseases (mainly in Parkinson' ...

Background In the past years, robotic systems have become increasingly popular in upper limb rehabilitation. Nevertheless, clinical studies have so far not been able to confirm superior efficacy of robotic therapy over conventional methods. The personaliza ...

Background: Common scales for clinical evaluation of post-stroke upper-limb motor recovery are often complemented with kinematic parameters extracted from movement trajectories. However, there is no a general consensus on which parameters to use. Moreover, ...

The present relates to a method for generating a graph representing a virtually lesioned connectome of a patient after a stroke comprising:- providing structural data of the brain of the patient after the stroke;- segmenting said structural data to delinea ...

The spinal cord is the main interface between the brain and the periphery. It notably plays a central role in motor control, as spinal motoneurons activate skeletal muscles involved in voluntary movements. Yet, the spinal mechanisms underlying human moveme ...

Background: Exoskeletons for lower and upper extremities have been introduced in neurorehabilitation because they can guide the patient's limb following its anatomy, covering many degrees of freedom and most of its natural workspace, and allowing the contr ...

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been widely employed to study stroke pathophysiology. In particular, analyses of fMRI signals at rest were directed at quantifying the impact of stroke on spatial features of brain networks. However, brain n ...

Objective.Several training programs have been developed in the past to restore motor functions after stroke. Their efficacy strongly relies on the possibility to assess individual levels of impairment and recovery rate. However, commonly used clinical scal ...

Theoretical advances in the neurosciences are leading to the development of an increasing number of proposed interventions for the enhancement of functional recovery after brain damage. Integration of these novel approaches in clinical practice depends on ...

Robotic devices represent an undeniable alternative method to traditional therapy. However, the clinical use of robot-assisted rehabilitation for patients with hemiplegia after stroke has been restricted for decades by i) limited functional characterisatio ...

The present invention provides an apparatus and a method able to estimate motor improvement in real-time during three-dimensional rehabilitation tasks and to consequently dynamically personalize the therapy. The method can be carried out by a computer progr ...

People with late-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) often suffer from debilitating locomotor deficits that are resistant to currently available therapies. To alleviate these deficits, we developed a neuroprosthesis operating in closed loop that targets the dor ...

How movements are generated and controlled by the central nervous system (CNS) is still not well understood. In this work, we tested the hypothesis of a modular organization of the brain activity during the execution of voluntary movements. In particular, ...

Muscle synergies have been proposed as building blocks that simplify the construction of movements, and as a method to study motor behavior. However, the pre-processing of the EMG signals and the factorization algorithm may impact on their extraction and m ...

Predicting the grasping function during reach-to-grasp motions is essential for controlling a prosthetic hand or a robotic assistive device. An early accurate prediction increases the usability and the comfort of a prosthetic device. This work proposes an ...
