Supercontinuum generation and soliton microcomb formation both represent key techniques for the formation of coherent, ultrabroad optical frequency combs, enabling the RF-to-optical link. Coherent supercontinuum generation typically relies on ultrashort pu ...

Earth-like planets, dark energy and variability of fundamental physical constants can be discovered by observing wavelength shifts in the optical spectra of astronomical objects(1-5). These wavelength shifts are so tiny that exquisitely accurate and precis ...

High-speed optical interconnects rely on advanced wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) schemes. However, while photonic-electronic interfaces can be efficiently realized on silicon-on-insulator chips, dense integration of the necessary light sources stil ...

A light pulse source (100), being adapted for generating repetitive optical pulses, comprises a continuous wave (cw) laser (10) being arranged for providing cw laser light, an optical microresonator (20) being made of a resonator material, which has a thir ...

Temporal dissipative solitons in a continuous-wave laser-driven nonlinear optical microresonator were observed. The solitons were generated spontaneously when the laser frequency was tuned through the effective zero detuning point of a high-Q resonance, wh ...

We report the generation of an octave-spanning optical frequency comb in a continuous wave laser pumped microresonator. The generated comb spectrum covers the wavelength range from 990 to 2170 nm without relying on additional external broadening. Continuou ...

Optical solitons are propagating pulses of light that retain their shape because nonlinearity and dispersion balance each other. In the presence of higher-order dispersion, optical solitons can emit dispersive waves via the process of soliton Cherenkov rad ...

Optical frequency combs have the potential to revolutionize terabit communications(1). The generation of Kerr combs in nonlinear microresonators(2) is particularly promising(3), enabling line spacings of tens of gigahertz. However, such combs may exhibit s ...

Phase coherently linking optical-to-radio frequencies with femtosecond mode-locked laser frequency combs has enabled counting the cycles of light and is the basis of optical clocks, absolute frequency synthesis, tests of fundamental physics, and improved s ...

Optical frequency combs allow for the precise measurement of optical frequencies and are used in a growing number of applications. The new class of Kerr-frequency comb sources, based on parametric frequency conversion in optical microresonators, can comple ...

The mid-infrared spectral range (lambda similar to 2-20 mu m) is of particular importance as many molecules exhibit strong vibrational fingerprints in this region. Optical frequency combs-broadband optical sources consisting of equally spaced and mutually ...

We demonstrate broadband resonant supercontinuum generation based on stable bright soliton formation in Si3N4 microresonators with either anomalous or normal dispersion. The frequency combs have an electronically detectable repetition rate of 28 GHz, and s ...

We demonstrate broadband resonant supercontinuum generation in a Si3N4 microresonator with normal dispersion. Rectangular bright pulses are shown to form directly using synchronous pulse-driving, generating a 2,600-line comb at 28 GHz repetition rate. (C) ...

We enter the multi-stability regime of an optical microresonator to generate heteronuclear soliton molecules. Ultrafast electro-optical sampling reveals the bound structures of such soliton molecules, despite comprising solitons of dissimilar amplitudes, d ...

We report on measurements of phase noise dynamics of microwave beat notes observed in low repetition rate silicon nitride based Kerr-comb generators and relate them to results from dispersion simulations and measurements. (C) 2011 Optical Society of Americ ...

Chip-scale frequency comb sources are likely to become key elements of future terabit/s optical transceivers. We investigate and demonstrate the viability of different comb generation schemes for transmission at multiterabit/s data rates. ...

Advanced wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) requires both efficient multi-wavelength light sources to generate optical carriers and highly scalable photonic-electronic interfaces to encode data on these carriers. In this paper, we give an overview on o ...

We demonstrate dispersion engineering of integrated silicon nitride based ring resonators through conformal coating with hafnium dioxide deposited on top of the structures via atomic layer deposition. Both, magnitude and bandwidth of anomalous dispersion c ...

The formation of temporal dissipative solitons in optical microresonators enables compact, high-repetition rate sources of ultrashort pulses as well as low noise, broadband optical frequency combs with smooth spectral envelopes. Here we study the influence ...
