Currently most optimization methods for urban transport networks (i) are suited for networks with simplified dynamics that are far from real-sized networks or (ii) apply decentralized control, which is not appropriate for heterogeneously loaded networks or ...

Transport systems in real cities are complex with many modes of transport sharing and competing for limited road space. This work intends to understand how space distributions for modes and interactions among modes affect network traffic performance. While ...

With the growing popularity of ride-hailing services and the desire to operate those services efficiently, ridehailing companies need to ensure a sufficiently large fleet size and an appropriate rebalancing of empty vehicles. Due to the complexity of city ...

The use of drones offers an innovative traffic data collection technique that allows to capture very detailed and accurate vehicle trajectories. However, deploying them for an entire day would be prohibitively expensive due to the limitations of their batt ...

This paper analyzes urban multimodal transportation systems in an aggregated way. To describe the aggregate behavior of traffic in cities, use is made of an idea that is now receiving some attention: the macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD). We demonstrat ...

Traffic congestion is a substantial problem plaguing modern society. Researchers and practitioners working on transportation systems turn to methods from automatic control to decrease congestion and improve urban mobility. Considering the sheer physical si ...

Vehicle trajectory datasets collected in urban traffic environments with drones pose unique chal- lenges in terms of denoising due to extensive visual restrictions, perspective distortions and human- induced errors. This article taps into the unexplored po ...

This paper analyzes a class of Stackelberg games where different actors compete for shared resources and a central authority tries to balance the demand through a pricing mechanism. Situations like this can for instance occur when fleet owners of electric ...

Dynamic network-level models directly addressing ride-sourcing services can support the devel-opment of efficient strategies for both congestion alleviation and promotion of more sustainable mobility. Recent developments presented models focusing on ride-h ...

This work investigates the benefits of a two-layer adaptive signal control framework combining multi-region perimeter control (PC) with distributed Max Pressure (MP) control in selected network intersections. Motivated by MP’s questionable performance in o ...

Schedule instability adversely affects the performance of bus transport systems. Bus bunching and similar irregularities decrease quality of bus services and increase travel times. In this regard, bus system management schemes are of high importance. Motiv ...

In this paper, we investigate an area-based pricing scheme for congested multimodal urban networks with the consideration of user heterogeneity. We propose a time-dependent pricing scheme where the tolls are iteratively adjusted through a Proportional-Inte ...

Recently, an open-data initiative was announced with one of the most complete datasets to study urban congestion. The pNEUMA dataset consists of more than half a million trajectories in heterogeneous traffic. In order to utilize the dataset for macroscopic ...

This paper offers a new algorithm to efficiently optimize scheduling decisions for dial-a-ride problems (DARPs), including problem variants considering electric and autonomous vehicles (e-ADARPs). The scheduling heuristic, based on linear programming theor ...

Management of road traffic in urban settings remains a challenging problem. Perimeter control schemes proposed to alleviate congestion in large-scale urban networks usually assume noise-free measurements of the traffic state, which is problematic since mea ...

Many first-order macroscopic models for freeway traffic have been developed since the seminal work on the well-known Lighthill-Whitham-Richards, or LWR, continuous model. The asymmetric cell transmission model (ACTM) is a widely accepted macroscopic model ...

One of the limitations of ride-sharing is that matched drivers and riders need to have similar itineraries and desired arrival times for ride-sharing to be competitive against other transport modes. By allowing a single transfer at a designated transfer hu ...

Many efforts have been carried out to optimize the traffic signal settings in cities. Nevertheless, state-of-the-art and -practice strategies cannot deal efficiently with oversaturated conditions (i.e. queue spillbacks and partial gridlocks), as they are e ...
