Image and geometry registration algorithms are an essential component of many computer graphics and computer vision systems. With recent technological advances in RGB-D sensors, such as the Microsoft Kinect or Asus Xtion Live, robust algorithms that combin ...

The development of novel form-active hybrid structures (FAHS) is impeded by a lack of modelling tools that allow for exploratory topology modelling of shaped assemblies. We present a flexible and real-time computational design modelling pipeline developed ...

We present the X-Shell pavilion, a lightweight structure composed of elastic beam elements joined in a special layout that allows easy on-site deployment. The structure’s undeployed assembly configuration lies mostly flat and is easy to build, consisting o ...

Fabrication of LEGO models in large scale requires careful pre-planning to produce constructable and stable models. We propose a system that, starting with a voxelization of a 3D mesh, merges voxels to form larger bricks, and then analyzes and repairs stru ...

We present Bistable Auxetic Surface Structures, a novel deployable material system based on optimized bistable auxetic cells. Such a structure can be flat-fabricated from elastic sheet material, then deployed towards a desired double-curved target shape by ...

Mesh editing under constraints is a challenging task with numerous applications in geometric modeling, industrial design, and architectural form finding. Recent methods support constraint-based exploration of meshes with fixed connectivity, but commonly la ...

Triaxial weaving, a craft technique that enables the generation of surfaces with tri-directional arrays of initially straight elastic strips, has long been loved by basket makers and artists seeking a combination of practical and aesthetically-pleasing str ...

The concept of symmetry has received significant attention in computer graphics and computer vision research in recent years. Numerous methods have been proposed to find, extract, encode and exploit geometric symmetries and high‐level structural informatio ...

We study ensembles of elastic rods that are tensioned by a small set of inextensible cables. The cables induce forces that deform the initially straight, but flexible rods into 3D space curves at equilibrium. Rods can be open or closed, knotted, and arrang ...

The computation of caustics created by reflection or refraction of light is a well-studied problem in computer graphics. This paper investigates the inverse problem: Given a greyscale intensity image, find the shape of a surface that will cast a caustic th ...

Many tasks in graphical user interfaces require users to interact with elements at various levels of precision. We present FingerGlass, a bimanual technique designed to improve the precision of graphical tasks on multitouch screens. It enables users to qui ...

We present a computational approach for designing wire meshes, i.e., freeform surfaces composed of woven wires arranged in a regular grid. To facilitate shape exploration, we map material properties of wire meshes to the geometric model of Chebyshev nets. ...

Deployable gridshells are a class of planar-to-spatial structures that achievea 3D curved geometry by inducing bending on a flat grid of elastic beams. However, theslender nature of these beams often conflicts with the structure’s load-bearing capacity. To ...

We present a computational inverse design method for a new class of surface-based inflatable structure. Our deployable structures are fabricated by fusing together two layers of inextensible sheet material along carefully selected curves. The fusing curves ...

Caustics are captivating light patterns created by materials bundling or diverting light by refraction or reflection. We know caustics as random side effects, appearing, for example, at the bottom of a swimming pool. In this paper we show that it is possib ...

Fabrication of LEGO© models in large scale requires careful pre-planning to produce constructable and stable models. We propose a system that, starting with a voxelization of a 3D mesh, merges voxels to form larger bricks, and then analyzes and repairs str ...

We introduce design transformations for rule-based procedural models, e.g., for buildings and plants. Given two or more procedural designs, each specified by a grammar, a design transformation combines elements of the existing designs to generate new desig ...

The χ-Shells is a new kind of deployable reticulated shells that has features comparable to other traditional shells. Its deployment uses the mechanical properties of a beam grid to generate a three-dimensional shape. This new generation of reticulated she ...

The realistic reconstruction of hair motion is challenging because of hair’s complex occlusion, lack of a well-defined surface, and non-Lambertian material. We present a system for passive capture of dynamic hair performances using a set of high-speed vide ...

Bending-active structures are composed of elastic elements that deform to achieve a desired target shape. To support effective design, inverse algorithms have been proposed that optimize the geometry of each element specifically for each design. This makes ...
