Caustics are captivating light patterns created by materials focusing or diverting light by refraction or reflection. We know caustics as random side effects, appearing, for example, at the bottom of a swimming pool, or generated by many glass objects, lik ...

Method of designing a refractive surface, comprising providing a refractive object having a refractive surface with an initial geometry, determining a refraction of incident illumination through the refractive surface with the initial geometry to create a ...

This article presents a new lightweight construction system for doubly curved shells made from timber plates, inspired by the masonry vaults of Eladio Dieste. The system was developed for a specific case-study project, and general applications to other fre ...

Surface-based inflatables are composed of two thin layers of nearly inextensible sheet material joined together along carefully selected fusing curves. During inflation, pressure forces separate the two sheets to maximize the enclosed volume. The fusing c ...

A shape grammar defines a procedural shape space containing a variety of models of the same class, e.g. buildings, trees, furniture, airplanes, bikes, etc. We present a framework that enables a user to interactively design a probability density function (p ...

Throughout the last few years, acquisition and processing of dynamic geometry has already received quite an amount of attention in the computer vision and graphics research community. Recently, the topic has gained a significant boost due to the availabili ...

In architectural design, surface shapes are commonly subject to geometric constraints imposed by material, fabrication or assembly. Rationalization algorithms can convert a freeform design into a form feasible for production, but often require design modif ...

We present a method for the design of 3D constructions from planar pieces that can be cut easily and cheaply with laser cutters and similar Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines. By cutting tight slits in intersecting pieces, they can be slid into each ...

Shape registration and, more generally speaking, computing correspondence across shapes are fundamental problems in computer graphics and vision. Problems from this area show up in many diff erent variants such as scan registration, deformable shape matchi ...

In this paper we study Weingarten surfaces and explore their potential for fabrication-aware design in freeform architecture. Weingarten surfaces are characterized by a functional relation between their principal curvatures that implicitly defines approxim ...

Morton's knots are a family of space curves to which there is no plane simultaneously tangent in three distinct points. This property enables a physical instance to roll on a plane while having at most two contact points with it. These knots are not smooth ...

We present a new algorithm for real-time hand tracking on commodity depth-sensing devices. Our method does not require a user-specific calibration session, but rather learns the geometry as the user performs live in front of the camera, thus enabling seaml ...

We present a computational framework for modeling and optimizing complex assemblies using cone joints. Cone joints are integral joints that generalize traditional single-direction joints such as mortise and tenon joints to support a general cone of directi ...

We present a complete pipeline for creating fully rigged, personalized 3D facial avatars from hand-held video. Our system faithfully recovers facial expression dynamics of the user by adapting a blendshape template to an image sequence of recorded expressi ...

We present a computational inverse design framework for a new class of volumetric deployable structures that have compact rest states and deploy into bending-active 3D target surfaces. Umbrella meshes consist of elastic beams, rigid plates, and hinge joint ...

Elastic gridshells are a class of planar-to-3D linkages typically composed of straight flexible beams connected via rigid rotational joints. The integration of planar curved flexible beams into these linkages significantly broadens their design space, allo ...

Understanding patterns of variation from raw measurement data remains a central goal of shape analysis. This understanding reveals which elements are exactly repeated, or how elements can be derived as structured variations from a common base element. We i ...

We present a novel physics-based approach to facial animation. Contrary to commonly used generative methods, our solution computes facial expressions by minimizing a set of non-linear potential energies that model the physical interaction of passive flesh, ...

Registration algorithms are an essential component of many computer graphics and computer vision systems. With recent technological advances in RGBD sensors (color plus depth), an active area of research is in techniques combining color, geometry, and lear ...

Interlocking assemblies have a long history in the design of puzzles, furniture, architecture, and other complex geometric structures. The key defining property of interlocking assemblies is that all component parts are immobilized by their geometric arran ...
