We present a study of the optical mode structure in metal-dielectric multilayer structures that represent amorphous silicon thin film solar cells with metallic back contact. Knowledge of the modal structure represents a first step toward describing absorpt ...

In thin-film silicon solar cells textured interfaces are introduced, leading to improved antireflection and light trapping capabilities of the devices. Thin-layers are deposited on surface-textured substrates or superstrates and the texture is translated t ...

We introduce a limit for the strength of coupling light into the modes of solar cells. This limit depends on both a cell’s thickness and its modal properties. For a cell with refractive index n and thickness d, we obtain a maximal coupling rate of $2c\sqrt ...

In this study we present a boron-doped silicon carbide layers as a hole-selective contact which is compatible with short annealing time (typically < 1 minute) as the one used for firing of metal pastes. The application of such layers on symmetrically proce ...

The n-type TOPCon technology is currently the leading approach in the industry. Generally, it involves two high-temperature steps that can result in long cycle times and expensive processes. In this context, we propose a lean manufacturing process based on ...

We investigate the influence of patterned metallic back reflector on absorption in thinfilm silicon photovoltaics. The impact of symmetry, periodicity, and angle of incidence of light is discussed by simulation and experiment. ...

Several amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) deposition conditions have been reported to produce films that degrade least under light soaking when incorporated into a-Si:H solar cells. However, a systematic comparison of these a-Si:H materials has never been present ...

Texturing of interfaces in thin film silicon solar cells is essential to enhance the produced photocurrent and thus the efficiencies.AUVnano-imprint-lithography (UV-NIL) replication processwas developed to prepare substrates with textures that are suitable ...

We investigate the efficiency potential of organic-inorganic halide perovskite/crystalline silicon tandem solar cells, a new class of photovoltaic devices targeting long-term cost reductions by ultrahigh conversion efficiencies. Methyl ammonium lead triiod ...

The aim of this work is to demonstrate the maturity of the TOPCon technology by conducting a round-robin on symmetrically processed lifetime samples in the leading European PV institutes EPFL, ISC, CEA-INES, ISFH, IMEC and Fraunhofer ISE within the H2020 f ...

We evaluate the potential of three-dimensional (3D) thin-film silicon solar cells in the superstrate configuration deposited on hexagonally ordered arrays of ZnO nanocolumns (NCs). These nanostructures are prepared by hydrothermal growth, which is an effec ...

The micromorph solar cell (stack of amorphous and microcrystalline cells) concept is the key for achieving high efficiency stabilized thin film silicon solar cells. We introduce a device structure that allows a better control of the light in-coupling into ...

We present electron- and hole-selective passivating contacts based on wet-chemically grown interfacial SiOx and overlying in-situ doped silicon carbide (SiCx) deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. After annealing at 850 degrees C, excelle ...

We investigate rapid thermal processing (RTP) as alternative to the prolonged thermal annealing process used to form tunnel-oxide passivating contacts for silicon solar cells. The thermal treatment is generally followed by hydrogenation to passivate defect ...

The deposition of a stack of amorphous (a-Si:H) and microcrystalline (µc- Si:H) tandem thin film silicon solar cells (micromorph) requires at least twice the time used for a single junction a-Si:H cell. However, micromorph devices have a higher potential e ...

There is general agreement that the future production of electric energy has to be renewable and sustainable in the long term. Photovoltaic (PV) is booming with more than 7GW produced in 2008 and will therefore play an important role in the future electric ...

Silicon heterojunction solar cells typically use stacks of hydrogenated intrinsic/doped amorphous silicon layers as carrier selective contacts. However, the use of these layers may cause parasitic optical absorption losses and moderate fill factor (FF) val ...

We study the effects of a-Si:H and mu c-Si:H covering layers and an H-2 treatment on the characteristics of mu c-Si:H thin film solar cells deposited in open single chamber very high frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition systems. Secondary io ...

This paper reports on the fabrication of In xGa 1 - xN (InGaN) layers with various compositions ranging from InN to GaN using a cost-effective low-temperature plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method and analyzes the influence of deposition ...

The chemical compositions of defective regions in microcrystalline thin film Si solar cells are studied using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the scanning transmission electron microscope. Nanometer-reso ...
