Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have extremely advantageous characteristics such as lightness, compactness, flexibility, and large displacements. However, in order to operate, they can require voltages in the order of several thousands of volts. Thus ...

This article demonstrates person localization using a hybrid system consisting of an electromagnetic positioning system and a depth camera to authorize access control. The ultimate aim of this system is to distinguish moving people in a defined area by tra ...

The ubiquitous implementation of 5G networks and the Internet of Things (IoT), brings about the importance of indoor localization. Even though Global Positioning System (GPS) provides an efficient outdoor Positioning System (PS), indoor positioning techniq ...

All wireless devices must comply with the local radio regulations which are set by international and national regulatory bodies such as the European Telecommunication Standardization Institute (ETSI) for Europe and the Federal Commission for Communication ...

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) has become very common for tracking applications in homes, stadiums, malls, and hospitals over the last decade. With the outbreak of COVID, the technology was widely used for local tracking of the virus spread [1]. However, despi ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) are a type of smart material described as compliant capacitors. They show impressive performances as soft actuators, such as a high strain and fast response. Nonetheless, replicating natural muscle function with DEAs h ...

This paper describes a detailed design procedure for an efficient thermal body energy harvesting integrated power converter. The procedure is based on the examination of power loss and power transfer in a converter for a self-powered medical device. The ef ...

The wireless sensor nodes are most energy-efficient when they operate at the minimal operating voltage. The nominal voltage of the batteries used is often significantly higher. This paper analyzes DC-DC power conversion from the point of view of ultra low- ...

This paper describes a system to drive piezoelectric actuators over more than one decade of voltages and one octave of frequencies, in order to perform high-speed complex impedance characterization at a user chosen voltage excitation level. This characteri ...

The DC-DC flyback converter is one of the most suitable topologies to generate the voltages necessary to operate Dielectric Elastomer Actuators. Voltages which can range from 5 to 20 kV. Previous works demonstrated through experiments the flyback’s ability ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) require ultra high voltages in the order of several kilo volts to operate. To supply such voltages, a DC-DC flyback converter topology was selected. One of the main advantage of using such a structure is the possibilit ...

The control strategy to discharge a capacitive load such as a dielectric elastomer actuator charged to several kilo-volts is critical to obtain a safe and reliable actuation. In the case of this publication, an ultra-high voltage bidirectional flyback conv ...

A wireless sensor platform for use in ultralow-power wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is presented. The proposed round sensor (RoSe) node is physically robust, is resistant to humidity, and has a housing that can be in direct contact with food. These charac ...

This paper presents the critical parasitic elements of coupled inductors and their influence when designing a low input (12V) and ultra-high output voltage (>4000V) DC-DC Flyback Converter. The aim is to design a compact converter capable to supply the ult ...

This paper describes a converter which configures itself to increase power transfer and decrease losses. The system controls its three timing variables by three loops in a stable manner. A time domain state-space averaging model is used to design the syste ...

A troubleshooting method for debugging wireless sensor nodes using measurements of the supply current waveform and logic outputs is presented. The troubleshooting and debugging technique uses the supply current waveform in conjunction with the measurement ...

This paper describes a design procedure for an efficient body thermal energy harvesting integrated power converter. This procedure is based on loss examination for a self-powered medical device. All optimum system parameters are calculated respecting the t ...

In this paper a new wireless sensor node intended for use in ultra-low power Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is presented. The node uses commercial of-the-shelf radio, microcontroller and a custom developed antenna embedded in the housing. Over-molding with ...
