Linear optimal gains are computed for the subcritical two-dimensional separated boundary-layer flow past a bump. Very large optimal gain values are found, making it possible for small-amplitude noise to be strongly amplified and to destabilize the flow. Th ...

Surface roughness significantly modifies the liquid film thickness entrained when dip coating a solid surface, particularly at low coating velocity. Using a homogenization approach, we present a predictive model for determining the liquid film thickness co ...

The present paper describes a microfluidic oscillator based on facing impinging jets and operating in laminar flow conditions. Using appropriate microchannel configurations, pulsatile liquid flows are generated at the microscale from steady and equal inlet ...

Both surface tension and buoyancy force in stable stratification act to restore perturbed interfaces back to their initial positions. Hence, both are intuitively considered as stabilizing agents. Nevertheless, the Taylor-Caulfield instability is a countere ...

The influence of confinement onto the inviscid and incompressible linear stability of the family of wakes introduced by Monkewitz [Phys. Fluids 31, 999 (1988)] is examined. The nondimensional parameters of the model, the velocity ratio Λ, defined as ratio ...

We show experimentally that a flow-induced, Reynolds number-dependent particle-capture mechanism in branching junctions can be enhanced or eliminated by varying the junction angle. In addition, numerical simulations are used to show that the features respo ...

We investigate the stability of the steady vertical path and the emerging trajectories of a buoyancy -driven annular disk as the diameter of its central hole is varied. The steady and axisymmetric wake associated with the steady vertical path of the disk, ...

Orbital sloshing is a technique to gently mix a container's liquid content and it is commonly used in fermentation and cell cultivation processes. Besides the rich wave dynamics observed at the interface, Bouvard et al. [Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 084801 (2017)2 ...

Dynamics and instabilities occurring in the near-wake of wind turbines have a crucial role for the wake downstream evolution, and for the onset of far-wake instabilities. Furthermore, wake dynamics significantly affect the intra-wind farm wake flow, wake i ...

The on-demand generation of viscous microdroplets to print functional or biological materials remains challenging using conventional inkjet-printing methods, mainly due to aggregation and clogging issues. In an effort to overcome these limitations, we impl ...

A formal framework to characterize and control/optimize the flow past permeable membranes by means of a homogenization approach is proposed and applied to the wake flow past a permeable cylindrical shell. From a macroscopic viewpoint, a Navier-like effecti ...

We revisit the inviscid spatio-temporal stability properties of mixing layers. Earlier comparisons of the dispersion relations pertaining to the broken line model and the hyperbolic tangent profile have shown that the temporal stability properties are main ...

Renewable energy sources (RES) have reached 23.7% of the worldwide electrical generation production in 2015. The hydraulic energy contribution amounts to 16.6% and comes mainly form large-scale hydropower plants, where Francis turbines represents 60% of th ...

Wind tunnel measurements were performed for the wake produced by a three-bladed wind turbine immersed in uniform flow. These tests show the presence of a vorticity structure in the near-wake region mainly oriented along the streamwise direction, which is d ...

A model to describe the transport across membranes of chemical species dissolved in an incompressible flow is developed via homogenization. The asymptotic matching between the microscopic and macroscopic solute concentration fields leads to a solute flux j ...

Transport properties of particles in confining geometries show very specific characteristics as lateral drift, oscillatory movement between lateral walls or the deformation of flexible fibers. These dynamics result from viscous friction with transversal an ...

The question of optimal spanwise-periodic modification for the stabilisation of spanwise-invariant flows is addressed. A second-order sensitivity analysis is conducted for the linear temporal stability of parallel flows U-0 subject to small-amplitude spanw ...

The purpose of this review article is to push amplitude equations as far as possible from threshold. We focus on the Stuart-Landau amplitude equation describing the supercritical Hopf bifurcation of the flow in the wake of a cylinder for critical Reynolds ...

We study the flow within a stationary drop in a Hele-Shaw cell. The experiments are performed in a microfluidic channel, whose surface is patterned with a single hole that serves to anchor the drop while the outer fluid continues to flow. The recirculation ...

The instability of the hub vortex observed in wind turbine wakes has recently been studied by Iungo et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 737, 2013, pp. 499–526) via local stability analysis of the mean velocity field measured through wind tunnel experiments. This ...
