A combined DFT/vibrational spectroscopy approach is used to determine the interactions of the 1,3-dimethylimidazolium ([Mmim]+) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ([Emim]+) cations and [BF4]- anions with each other in the liquid state and with Pd nanoparticle ...

Hydrogenolysis of C-O bonds is a highly challenging reaction with the most efficient catalysts based on bimetallic assemblies. Systematic studies to identify the optimum metal combination have not been performed and, therefore, we designed a method to scre ...

The mechanism of formation of rhodium nanocubes in the presence of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide and polyvinylpyrrolidone in ethylene glycol was studied in situ by XAFS, in conjunction with other ex situ techniques including MALDI-TOF MS, XRD, TEM, a ...

Platform chemicals are usually derived from petrochemical feedstocks. A sustainable alternative commences with lignocellulosic biomass, a renewable feedstock, but one that is highly challenging to process. Ionic liquids (ILs) are able to solubilize biomass ...

This review describes some of the fascinating advances in the field of rhodium nanoparticle (NP) catalysis that have emerged in recent years. The examples described are categorized according to the research approach applied, involving either direct enginee ...

The hydrogenation of phenylacetone to cyclohexylacetone, in which the aromatic ring is selectively reduced in preference to the carbonyl group, has been achieved with chemoselectivities exceeding 90%. The catalyst (precatalyst) used to achieve this transfo ...

This paper describes chitin liquefaction in ethylene glycol (EG) under the catalysis of sulfuric acid for the first time. Up to 75% of chitin was liquefied at 165 degrees C within 90 min by using 8 wt % of acid (refer to the mass of EG). The major products ...

Pd nanoparticles (NPs) with a small size and narrow size distribution were prepared from the decomposition of Pd(OAc)(2) in a series of hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) comprising the 1-(2'-hydroxylethyl)-3-methylimidazolium cation and various a ...

Gold nanoparticles (NPs) stabilized by carboxylate modified polyvinylpyrrolidone have been prepared and fully characterized. The gold NPs efficiently catalyze the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol in water at ambient temperature and are easily separated ...

Hydrogen bonding in ionic liquids based on the 1-(2'-hydroxylethyl)-3-methylimidazolium cation (C(2)OHmim) and various anions (A) of differing H-bond acceptor strength, viz. hexafluorophosphate PF6, tetrafluoroborate BF4, bis-(trifluoro ...

Poly-vinylpyrrolidone (PVP) stabilized nanoparticle (NP) catalysts are among the most active NP catalysts demonstrating excellent activities and stabilities in a wide and diverse range of reactions. One of the main limitations, that tend to prevent their u ...

In this article we highlight some of the recent developments in the aqueous-phase hydrogenation of alkenes and arenes. The traditional types of water-soluble catalysts applied in aqueous media are outlined together with recent trends towards the developmen ...

Two thermoresponsive polymers, poly(3-ethyl-1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) and poly(3-butyl-1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone), with very sensitive and reversible temp.-dependent water soly. were described. The application of these polymers as Au nanocatalyst stabilizers lead ...

A series of thioether-functionalised imidazolium salts have been prepared and characterized. Subsequent reaction of the thioether-functionalised imidazolium salts with iodomethane affords imidazolium-sulfonium salts composed of doubly charged cations and t ...

N-Acetyl-D-glucosamine (NAG), the monomer of the world's second most abundant biopolymer chitin, has been for the first time converted to its corresponding amide/amino substituted sugar alcohols, smaller C2-4 polyols and N-acetylmonoethanolamine (NMEA), ov ...

A series of cross-linked ionic polymers based on styrene-functionalized imidazolium salts with chloride, hexafluorophosphate, or tetrafluoroborate counter anions have been prepared and characterized using a range of analytical and spectroscopic techniques ...

Imidazolium salts with aromatic groups 1,3-bis(9-anthracenylmethyl)imidazolium chloride ([Bamim]Cl), 1,3-bis(1-naphthalenylmethyl)imidazolium chloride ([Bnmim]Cl) and 1,3-bis( benzylmethyl)imidazolium chloride ([Bbmim]Cl) were reacted with PdCl2 forming th ...

A highly efficient and poison-resistant system for the Suzuki coupling reaction based on hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liq. solvents has been established. Coupling of RC6H4X (X = Br, I, Cl) and 2-bromothiophene with R1C6H4B(OH)2 in 2-hydroxyethyl-substitut ...

Despite significant advances in the fabrication and applications of graphene-like materials, it remains a challenge to prepare single-layered metallic materials, which have great potential applications in physics, chemistry and material science. Here we re ...

Reaction of the zwitterionic imidazolium salt [(CH2COOH)(CH2COO)i.m.] with K2CO3 or BaO in the presence of 18-crown-6 affords the salts [(CH2COO)2i.m.][K(18-crown-6)] and [(CH2COO)2i.m.]2[Ba(18-crown-6)]. Recrystn. of these crown complexes from the ionic l ...
