The growing core counts and caches of modern processors result in data access latency becoming a function of the data's physical location in the cache. Thus, the placement of cache blocks determines the cache's performance. Reactive nonuniform cache archit ...

Caching the results of intermediate query results for future re-use is a common technique for improving the performance of analytics over raw data sources. An important design choice in this regard is whether to lazily cache only the offsets of satisfying ...

Commercial server applications remain memory bound on modern multiprocessor systems because of their large data footprints, frequent sharing, complex non-strided access patterns, and long chains of dependant misses. To improve memory system performance des ...

Modern Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing (HTAP) systems use an integrated data processing engine that performs analytics on fresh data, which are ingested from a transactional engine. HTAP systems typically consider data freshness at design time, ...

Online transaction processing (OLTP) is at the core of many data center applications. OLTP workloads are known to have large instruction footprints that foil existing L1 instruction caches resulting in poor overall performance. Prefetching can reduce the i ...

Simulations have become key in many scientific disciplines to better understand natural phenomena. Neuroscientists, for example, build and simulate increasingly fine grained models (including subcellular details, e.g., neurotransmitter) of the neocortex to ...

Prior research shows that database system performance is dominated by off-chip data stalls, resulting in a concerted effort to bring data into on-chip caches. At the same time, high levels of integration have enabled the advent of chip multiprocessors and ...

Scaling the performance of shared-everything on-line transaction processing to highly-parallel multicore hardware remains a great challenge for database system designers. Developments in OLTP technology remove locking and logging from being scalability bot ...

Spatial joins are becoming increasingly ubiquitous in many applications, particularly in the scientific domain. While several approaches have been proposed for joining spatial datasets, each of them has a strength for a particular type of density ratio amo ...

Techniques and solutions are provided for performing adaptive database table placement in a non-uniform memory access (NUMA) architecture. The adaptive table placement can occur in response to changing workloads on the NUMA nodes. For example, if a particu ...

Enterprise databases use storage tiering to lower capital and operational expenses. In such a setting, data waterfalls from an SSD-based high-performance tier when it is "hot" (frequently accessed) to a disk-based capacity tier and finally to a tape-based ...

Advances in observation instruments and abundance of computational power for simulations encourage scientists to gather and produce unprecedented amounts of increasingly complex data. Organizing data automatically to enable efficient and unobstructed acces ...

State-of-the-art database design tools rely on the query optimizer for comparing between physical design alternatives. Although it provides an appropriate cost model for physical design, query optimization is a computationally expensive process. The signif ...

Database systems deliver impressive performance for large classes of workloads as the result of decades of research into optimizing database engines. High performance, however, is achieved at the cost of versatility. In particular, database systems only op ...

The majority of spatial processing techniques rely heavily on the idea of approximating each group of spatial objects by their minimum bounding box (MBB). As each MBB is compact to store (requiring only two multi-dimensional points) and intersection tests ...

Analytical engines rely on in-memory data caching to avoid storage accesses and provide timely responses by keeping the most frequently accessed data in memory. Purely frequency- and time-based caching decisions, however, are a proxy of the expected query ...

Scientists in many disciplines use spatial mesh models to study physical phenomena. Simulating natural phenomena by changing meshes over time helps to understand and predict future behavior of the phenomena. The higher the precision of the mesh models, the ...

In the rapidly evolving AI era with large language models (LLMs) at the core, making LLMs more trustworthy and efficient, especially in output generation (inference), has gained significant attention. This is to reduce plausible but faulty LLM outputs (a.k ...
