The first hydrometeor classification technique based on two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) data is presented. The method provides an estimate of the dominant hydrometeor type falling over time intervals of 60 s during precipitation, using the statist ...

Between 15 and 19 March 2022, East Antarctica experienced an exceptional heat wave with widespread 30 degrees-40 degrees C temperature anomalies across the ice sheet. This record-shattering event saw numerous monthly temperature records being broken includ ...

The great success of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and its successor Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) has accelerated the development of global high-resolution satellite-based precipitation products (SPP). However, the quantitative a ...

We present a new approach for spatial interpolation of experimental raindrop size distribution (DSD) spectra. The DSD is fundamental to the study and understanding of precipitation and its monitoring and modelling. It is measured insitu using disdrometers ...

The behaviour of severe thunderstorms, particularly supercells, in complex terrain is still poorly understood. Utilising 6 years of radar-, lightning- and radiosounding-based thunderstorm data in the domain of the Swiss radar network, we study different th ...

Between 15 and 19 March 2022, East Antarctica experienced an exceptional heat wave with widespread 30 degrees-40 degrees C temperature anomalies across the ice sheet. In Part I, we assessed the meteorological drivers that generated an intense atmospheric r ...

The datasets presented in this article were collected during a four-months measurement campaign at the Belgian research base Princess Elisabeth Antarctica (PEA). The campaign, named PEA Orographic Precipitation Experiment (POPE), was conducted by the Envir ...

A data-driven approach to the classification of hydrometeors from measurements collected with polarimetric weather radars is proposed. In a first step, the optimal number of hydrometeor classes (nopt) that can be reliably identified from a large set of pol ...

The complex problem of quantitative precipitation estimation in the Alpine region is tackled from four different points of view: (1) the modern MeteoSwiss network of automatic telemetered rain gauges (GAUGE); (2) the recently upgraded MeteoSwiss dual-polar ...

Aerosol-cloud interactions in mixed-phase clouds (MPCs) are one of the most uncertain drivers of the hydrological cycle and climate change. A synergy of in situ, remote-sensing and modelling experiments were used to determine the source of ice-nucleating p ...

A particular aspect of the nonstationary nature of intermittent rainfall is investigated. It manifests itself in the fact that the average rain rate varies with the distance to the surrounding dry areas. The authors call this fundamental link between the r ...

Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) is a difficult task, particularly in complex topography, and requires the adjustment of empirical relations between radar observables and precipitation quantities, as well as methods to transform observations alo ...

The offshore extent of Antarctic katabatic winds exerts a strong control on the production of sea ice and the formation of polynyas. In this study, we make use of a combination of ground-based remotely sensed and meteorological measurements at Dumont d'Urv ...

The framework of universal multifractals (UM) characterizes the spatio-temporal variability in geophysical data over a wide range of scales with only a limited number of scale-invariant parameters. This work aims to clarify the link between multifractals ( ...

Intense Mediterranean precipitation can generate devastating flash floods. A better understanding of the spatial structure of intense rainfall is critical to better identify catchments that will produce strong hydrological responses. We focus on two intens ...

Data from a new experimental setup deployed in Dübendorf (Switzerland) are used to quantify and model the magnitude and dynamics of the wet-antenna attenuation (WAA) affecting a 1.85-km commercial microwave link at 38 GHz. The results show that the WAA exh ...

Accurate and reliable rain rate estimates are important for various hydrometeorological applications. Consequently, rain sensors of different types have been deployed in many regions. In this work, measurements from different instruments, namely, rain gaug ...

A new method to automatically classify solid hydrometeors based on Multi-Angle Snowflake Camera (MASC) images is presented. For each individual image, the method relies on the calculation of a set of geometric and texture-based descriptors to simultaneousl ...

Measurements of hailstone diameters and kinetic energy, collected by the Swiss network of automatic hail sensors, are available in three regions of Switzerland for the period between September 2018 and August 2023. In this study, we propose the use of doub ...

This repository contains the datasets of Doppler spectra collected by two meteorological radars in the vicinity of the Belgian research base Princess Elisabeth Antarctica (PEA). The measurement campaign has been conducted by the Environmental Remote S ...
