This study evaluates the performance of four bulk-type microphysics schemes, Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) double-moment 6-class (WDM6), WRF double-moment 7-class (WDM7), Thompson, and Morrison, focusing on hydrometeors and microphysics budgets in ...

Polarimetric radar-based hydrometeor classification is the procedure of identifying different types of hydrometeors by exploiting polarimetric radar observations. The main drawback of the existing supervised classification methods, mostly based on fuzzy lo ...

A method for the stochastic simulation of (rain)drop size distributions (DSDs) in space and time using geostatistics is presented. At each pixel, the raindrop size distribution is described by a Gamma distribution with two or three stochastic parameters. T ...

The current assessment of the Antarctic surface mass balance mostly relies on reanalysis products or climate model simulations. However, little is known about the ability of models to reliably represent the microphysical processes governing the precipitati ...

Rainfall intermittency is analyzed and quantified at small spatial and temporal scales using 2 years of radar and disdrometer data collected in Switzerland. Analytical models are fitted and used to describe the intermittency for spatial scales between 0 an ...

In this study, 8 years of high-resolution radiosonde data at nine Antarctic stations are analysed to provide the first large-scale characterization of the fine vertical structure of the low troposphere up to 3 km altitude over the coastal margins of East A ...

A case study in terms of variations in differential reflectivity Z(DR) observed at X band and snow crystal riming is presented for a light-snow event that occurred near Greeley, Colorado, on 26-27 November 2015. In the early portion of the event, Z(DR) val ...

During the austral summer 2019/2020, three vertically pointing K-band Doppler profilers (Micro Rain Radar PRO, MRR-PRO) were deployed along a transect across the Sor Rondane Mountains, directly south of the scientific base Princess Elisabeth Antarctica. Th ...

The specific differential phase shift on propagation K-dp is widely employed in the study of precipitation, although little is known about the effective accuracy of its estimates. The aim of this letter is to analyze the quality of K-dp estimates, using re ...

Snow distribution in complex alpine terrain and its evolution in the future climate is important in a variety of applications including hydropower, avalanche forecasting and freshwater resources. However, it is still challenging to quantitatively forecast ...

On 28 February 2018, 57mm of precipitation associated with a warm conveyor belt (WCB) fell within 21 h over South Korea. To investigate how the large-scale circulation influenced the microphysics of this intense precipitation event, we used radar measureme ...

This paper presents a regional extreme rainfall analysis based on 10 years of radar data for the 159 regions adopted for official natural hazard warnings in Switzerland. Moreover, a nowcasting tool aimed at issuing heavy precipitation regional alerts is in ...

The drop size distribution (DSD) describes the microstructure of liquid precipitation. The high variability of the DSD reflects the variety of microphysical processes controlling raindrop properties and affects the retrieval of rainfall. An analysis of the ...

Commercial microwave links (CMLs) in telecommunication networks can provide relevant information for remote sensing of precipitation and other environmental variables, such as path-averaged drop size distribution, evaporation, or humidity. The CoMMon field ...

This work aims at quantifying the variability of the parameters of the power laws used for rain-rate estimation from radar data, on the basis of raindrop size distribution measurements over a typical weather radar pixel. Power laws between the rain rate an ...

Hydrology requires accurate and reliable rainfall input. Because of the strong spatial and temporal variability of precipitation, estimation of spatially distributed rain rates is challenging. Despite the fact that weather radars provide high-resolution (b ...

The different quantities measured by dual-polarization radar systems are closely linked to each other. An extended Kalman filter framework is proposed in order to make use of constraints on individual radar observables that are induced by these relations. ...

The variability of the (rain)drop size distribution (DSD) in time and space is an intrinsic property of rainfall, of primary importance for various environmental fields such as remote sensing of precipitation for example. DSD observations are usually colle ...

Compared to the other continents and lands, Antarctica suffers from a severe shortage of in situ observations of precipitation. APRES3 (Antarctic Precipitation, Remote Sensing from Surface and Space) is a program dedicated to improving the observation of A ...

The accuracy required for a correct interpretation of differential reflectivity (ZDR) is typically estimated to be between 0.1 and 0.2 dB. This is achieved through calibration, defined as the identification of the constant or time-varying offset to be subt ...
