Plasmonic nano-structures of d(10) metals are suggested to be the future of photo-voltaics and photo-catalysis under solar irradiation, thanks to their large light absorption cross-section, versatility, and stability. We investigated the impact of continuo ...

The structure and defect concentration of colloidal solutions of ZnO nanoparticles, synthesized by a sol gel procedure (SG-NP), as well as commercially available ZnO nanoparticles (SA-NP) are investigated by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, transmission ele ...

Static and time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is used to probe the solvent shell structure around iodide and iodine. In particular, we characterize the changes ob served upon electron abstraction of aqueous iodide, which reflects the transit ...

We present the first structural detn. of the Pt2(P2O5H2)44- anion in soln. by analyzing the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectrum of the Pt LIII edge. The data could be fit with a simple model involving single and multiple scattering pa ...

The introduction of pump-probe techniques to the field of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has allowed the monitoring of both structural and electronic dynamics of disordered systems in the condensed phase with unprecedented accuracy, both in time and i ...

We employ grazing-incidence femtosecond x-ray diffraction to characterize the coherent, femtosecond laser-induced lattice motion of a bismuth crystal as a function of depth from the surface with a temporal resolution of 193 +/- 8 fs. The data show direct c ...

We present a theoretical analysis for the K- and L-2/3-edge static and picosecond X-ray absorption spectra of Fe(bpy)(3). Simulations of the pre-edge region at the Fe K-edge using time-dependent density functional theory demonstrate the importance of ...

X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a powerful probe of mol. structure, but it has previously been too slow to track the earliest dynamics after photoexcitation. We investigated the ultrafast formation of the lowest quintet state of aq. iron(II) tris(bipyridi ...

Capturing the evolving geometric and electronic structure in the course of a chemical reaction or biological process is the principal aim of time-resolved X-ray spectroscopies. Recent technological and methodological improvements, such as high repetition r ...

The photoinduced energy and structural relaxation of aq. iron(II)-tris-bipyridine ([FeII(bpy)3]2+), upon excitation into its singlet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (1MLCT) band, and the population of its short-lived (?0.6 ns) high-spin excited state have ...

Picosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is used to investigate the electronic and structural dynamics initiated by plasmon excitation of 1.8 nm diameter Au nanoparticles (NPs) functionalised with 1-hexanethiol. We show that 100 ps after photoexcitat ...

We review our recent studies of excited state structures and dynamics of chemical and biological systems with pico- and femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the liquid phase. ...

We present the extension of time-resolved optical pump/x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) probe experiments towards data collection atMHz repetition rates. The use of a high-power picosecond laser operating at an integer fraction of the repetition rate of ...

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most popular material for applications in solar-energy conversion and photocatalysis, both of which rely on the creation, transport, and trapping of charges (holes and electrons). The nature and lifetime of electron traps at ...

We investigate the structural response of charge and orbitally ordered (CO/OO) manganites to ultrafast optical excitation using optical reflectivity and x-ray diffraction as a probe. We study a La0.42Ca0.58MnO3 (LCMO) thin film and a La0.25Pr0.375Ca0.375Mn ...

We present an Fe K alpha resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and X-ray emission (XES) study of ferrous and ferric hexacyanide dissolved in water and ethylene glycol. We observe that transitions below the absorption edge show that the solvent has a d ...

We measured the ultrafast optical response of metal-dielectric superlattices by broadband all-optical pump-probe spectroscopy. The observed phase of the superlattice mode depends on the probe wavelength, making assignments of the excitation mechanism diffi ...

We present ultrafast x-ray diffraction (UXRD) experiments on different photoexcited oxide superlattices. All data are successfully simulated by dynamical x-ray diffraction calculations based on a microscopic model, that accounts for the linear response of ...

We use time-resolved optical reflectivity and x-ray diffraction with femtosecond resolution to study the dynamics of the structural order parameter of the charge density wave phase in TiSe2. We find that the energy density required to melt the charge densi ...

The advent of x-ray free electron lasers is providing new opportunities for probing the ultrafast excited state dynamics using structurally sensitive techniques. Herein we use excited state wavepacket dynamics of a prototypical Cu(I)-phenanthroline complex ...
