Thin films of oxide materials are widely used for various types of applications. The selection of an appropriate deposition method depends on the aimed material and application. We review here a high vacuum chemical vapour deposition (HV-CVD) method, which ...

Hematite (alpha-Fe2O3), due to its abundance and low-cost, is an attractive compound for photoelectrochemical splitting of water to produce hydrogen. However, one major obstacle preventing hematite from achieving the target efficiencies comprises its signi ...

Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) processes depend on the availability of suitable precursors. Precursors that deliver a stable vapour pressure are favourable in classical CVD processes, as they ensure process reproducibility. In high vacuum CVD (HV-CVD) pr ...

Embedded dielectric scatterers comprise an important approach for light trapping in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) due to their simple fabrication process. The challenge in applying these scatterers lies in finding the optimal dimensions and concentrati ...

Scattering particles constitute a key light trapping solution for thin film photovoltaics where either the particles are embedded in the light absorbing layer or a thick layer of them is used as a reflector. Here we introduce a monolayer of wavelength-scal ...

Maintaining electrical conductivity, optical transparency, and mechanical integrity against bending and stretching are key requirements for flexible transparent electrodes. Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) are widely used thin film electrodes in optoel ...

High-efficiency crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells increasingly feature sophisticated electron and hole contacts aimed at minimizing electronic losses. At the rear of photovoltaic devices, such contacts-usually consisting of stacks of functional layers ...

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are commonly used in a wide spectrum of device applications, thanks to their interesting electronic, photochromic, and electrochromic properties. Their environmental sensitivity, exploited for gas and chemical sensors, is how ...

Highly transparent electrodes with a well-tuned refractive index are essential for a wide range of optoelectronic devices, such as light emitting diodes and solar cells. Here, it is shown that the transparency of ZnO:Al can be improved and its refractive i ...

Laser-assisted deposition: The discovery of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) conditions under which the growth rate is a decreasing function of the precursor flux has the potential to boost the resolution of laser-assisted CVD processes whereas flux- and de ...

We propose and theoretically evaluate a plasmonic light trapping solution for thin film photovoltaic devices that comprises a monolayer or a submonolayer of wavelength-scale silver particles. We systematically study the effect of silver particle size using ...

Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) have not been effective in improving the overall performance of the cells with micrometer-thick absorbing layers mainly due to the parasitic optical dissipation in the metal. Here, using both experiment and theory, we demonstra ...

Large-scale deployment of a wide range of optoelectronic devices, including solar cells, critically depends on the long-term stability of their front electrodes. Here, we investigate the performance of Sn-doped In2O3 (ITO), H-doped In2O3 (IO:H), and Zn-dop ...

Semiconductor photoelectrodes for water oxidation that absorb visible light usually have poor electronic transport properties and small optical absorption coefficients near their absorption edge. Therefore, innovative designs that lead to significant optic ...

Flexible large-area organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) require highly conductive and transparent anodes for efficient and uniform light emission. Tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) is the standard anode in industry. However, due to the scarcity of indium, alt ...

Combinatorial high vacuum chemical vapor deposition (HV-CVD) of mixed HfO2-Nb2O5 thin films has been demonstrated to yield amorphous layers at substrate temperatures where individually deposited pure HfO2 and Nb2O5 films are polycrystalline. Spectroscopic ...

Lithium niobate is a key material for photonics with applications in optical modulators and light frequency converters. Present lithium niobate optical devices are realized in bulk lithium niobate single crystals while interests in higher integration and a ...

Iron(III) oxide (hematite, Fe2O3) nanofibers, as visible light-induced photoanode for water oxidation reaction of a water splitting process, were fabricated through electrospinning method followed by calcination treatment. The prepared samples were charact ...

We report on a heterodyne interferometric scanning near-field optical microscope developed for characterizing, at the nanometric scale, refractive index variations in thin films. An optical lateral resolution of 80 nm (lambda/19) and a precision smaller th ...
