Human adenoviruses are ubiquitous contaminants of surface water. Indigenous protists may interact with adenoviruses and contribute to their removal from the water column, though the associated kinetics and mechanisms differ between protist species. In this ...

Human enteric viruses are frequent microbial contaminants of surface water and groundwater. Waterborne viruses can be effectively inactivated by oxidants, such as those generated in Fenton-like systems. However, the mechanisms by which this inactivation oc ...

Protecting public health from pathogens is critical when treating wastewater to drinking water standards (i.e., planned water reuse). Viruses are a principal concern, yet real-time monitoring strategies do not currently measure virus removal through reuse ...

We describe a novel biosafety aerosol chamber equipped with state-of-theart instrumentation for bubble-bursting aerosol generation, size distribution measurement, and condensation-growth collection to minimize sampling artifacts when measuring virus infect ...

Enterovirus (EV) infectivity is typically measured as a bulk parameter, yet EV serotypes vary in their susceptibility to natural and engineered stressors. Here we developed an integrated cell culture reverse transcriptase quantitative PCR (ICC-RTqPCR) meth ...

The inactivation of coliphage MS2 by iron- and copper-catalyzed Fenton systems was studied to assess the importance of this process for virus inactivation in natural systems and during water treatment by advanced oxidation processes. The influence of H2O2 ...

Ultraviolet light in the UVC range is a commonly used disinfectant to control viruses in clinical settings and water treatment. Here, we employed an experimental evolution approach to investigate the adaptation of human echovirus 11 to disinfection by UVC, ...

Inactivation kinetics of enterovirus by disinfection is often studied using a single laboratory strain of a given genotype. Environmental variants of enterovirus are genetically distinct from the corresponding laboratory strain, yet it is poorly understood ...

This study assesses the presence, fate and effects of five environmentally relevant pharmaceuticals and eight of their corresponding human metabolites in Lake Geneva. Over a 10-month period, lake samples were taken at various depths and locations in the Vi ...

Solar disinfection of drinking water in PET bottles (SODIS) is a simple point-of-use technique efficient for the inactivation of many bacterial pathogens. In contrast, the efficiency of SODIS toward viruses is not well known. In this work, we studied the i ...

Serine proteases are important environmental contributors of enterovirus biocontrol. However, the structural features of molecular interaction accounting for the susceptibility of enteroviruses to proteases remains unexplained. Here, we describe the molecu ...

The presence of potentially persistent and bioactive human metabolites in surface waters gives rise to concern; yet little is known to date about the environmental fate of these compounds. This work investigates the direct photolysis of human metabolites o ...
