Interactions between the tide and sloping sea boundary make watertable fluctuations in coastal unconfined aquifers complicated. Based on a perturbation method, we derived a new analytical solution to predict watertable fluctuations for coastal unconfined a ...

A two-dimensional numerical model was presented for the simulation of sediment transport under oscillatory sheet flow conditions in the nearshre zone. Most existing mathematical models for predicting sediment transport in this area are based on the governi ...

Uranium extraction, processing and storage have resulted in a legacy of uranium-contaminated groundwater aquifers worldwide. An emerging remediation technology for such sites is the in situ immobilization of uranium via biostimulation of dissimilatory meta ...

TCA, time compression approximation, is a practical and often quite accurate tool to predict postponding infiltration for field applications. A modified approximation (MTCA) can be used just as easily and, in general, will reduce the error by about 50%. Th ...

Surf and swash zone hydrodynamics are complex, being composed of a highly energetic water-air mixture under periodically unsteady motion. Wave-current interactions have a major effect on the results of hydrodynamic simulations, and consequently on predicti ...

Macro-pores such as crab burrows are found commonly distributed in salt marsh sediments. Their disturbance on the soil structure is likely to influence both pore water flows and solute transport in salt marshes; however, the effects of crab burrows are not ...

The present knowledge of plunging hyperpycnal river plumes is mainly based on two-dimensional (confined) laboratory experiments. Several hypotheses on three-dimensional (unconfined) flow processes have been made, but not tested in situ. In this field study ...

Basin-scale quasi-geostrophic gyres are common features of large lakes subject to Coriolis force. Cyclonic gyres are often characterized by dome-shaped thermoclines that form due to pelagic upwelling that takes place in their center. At present, the dynami ...

Semi-analytical solutions are presented for flow to a well in an extensive homogeneous and anisotropic unconfined-fractured aquifer system separated by an aquitard. The pumping well is of infinitesimal radius and screened in either the overlying unconfined ...

Hyperpycnal (negatively buoyant) river inflow into lakes and oceans often develops three-dimensional (3D) plunging flow patterns when laterally unconfined. To determine the 3D flow pattern characteristics, laboratory experiments of laterally unconfined plu ...

Vertical 2D slice laboratory experiments were carried out in homogenous and layered sand tanks to elucidate the effects of a highly permeable (coarse-grained sand) interlayer on seawater intrusion and transport of contaminants to a coastal sea. Tidal fluct ...

In high head dams, the kinetic energy at the spillway toe is very high and the tail-water depth available for energy dissipation is relatively small. Cascade stilling basins are energy dissipation systems for high head dams, the design of which is based on ...

Submarine groundwater discharge from subterranean estuaries is affected by tides, which are represented in computational models as time-dependent boundary conditions on the seaward boundary. Conventionally, a small time step is used in the numerical model ...

A fully coupled thermal–hydraulic–mechanical–chemical (THMC) model was proposed to describe the migration of volatile organic contaminations (VOCs) in unsaturated landfill liners. The vertical soil stress, capillary pressure, air pressure, temperature incr ...

The dynamics of sediments entering lakes in river plumes is virtually unknown. This field study provides unprecedented evidence of the initiation and evolution of suspended sediment flocculation in the nearfield of the negatively-buoyant Rh & ocirc;ne Rive ...

A two-dimensional numerical model was presented for the simulation of wave breaking, runup and turbulence in the surf and swash zones. The main components of the model are the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations describing the average motion of a tur ...

Discharges of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and stormwater are recognized as an important source of environmental contamination. However, the harsh sewer environment and particular hydraulic conditions during rain events reduce the reliability of traditi ...

Benzene is a toxic contaminant and can harm many aquatic species and cause serious damages to the river eco-system, if released to rivers. In 2012, a major spill accident occurred on the Huaihe River in Eastern China with 3 tons of benzene released to the ...

Applications of the axisymmetric Boussinesq equation to groundwater hydrology and reservoir engineering have long been recognised. An archetypal example is invasion by drilling fluid into a permeable bed where there is initially no such fluid present, a ci ...
