The effect of antecedent conditions and specific rock fragment coverage on precipitation-driven soil erosion dynamics through multiple rainfall events was investigated using a pair of 6-m × 1-m flumes with 2.2% slope. Four sequential experiments – denoted ...

Seawater intrusion (SI) is a global issue, exacerbated by increasing demands for freshwater in coastal zones and predisposed to the influences of rising sea levels and changing climates. This review presents the state of knowledge in SI research, compares ...

For solute transport in a deformable clay liner, the importance of consolidation in the presence of sorption and consolidation-induced advection are well known. Here a one-dimensional coupled consolidation and solute transport model for a partially saturat ...

A detailed laboratory study was conducted to examine the effects of particle size on hysteretic sediment transport under time-varying rainfall. A rainfall pattern composed of seven sequential stepwise varying rainfall intensities (30, 37.5, 45, 60, 45, 37. ...

China's Loess Plateau (LP) is a quintessential example of a desert transitional environment characterized by a distinctive soil profile comprising of a red clay layer overlain by loess. The source of the sedimentary materials that formed the plateau, as we ...

This numerical investigation was carried out to advance mechanistic understanding of sediment transport under sheet flow conditions. An Euler-Euler coupled two-phase flow model was developed to simulate fluid-sediment oscillatory sheet flow. Since the conc ...

An approximate analytical solution of the Hairsine-Rose model of erosion is obtained by interpolation of asymptotic expressions for large times and great distances. The solution, when erosion is initiated by rainfall impact, is both simple and accurate. Th ...

Understanding of hydrological processes, including consideration of interactions between vegetation growth and water transfer in the root zone, underpins efficient use of water resources in arid-zone agriculture. Water transfers take place in the soil-plan ...

Capture zone equations for a multi-well system in strip-shaped confined and unconfined aquifers with and without regional flow are presented. The aquifer is limited by two parallel boundaries that are either no flow (barrier) or inflow (variable head) so t ...

Combining field observations, 3D hydrodynamic modeling, and particle tracking, we investigated wind-induced interbasin exchange between the Petit Lac (PL) (depth 75 m) and Grand Lac (GL) (depth 309 m) basins of Lake Geneva in early winter. Following a stro ...

Submesoscale filaments are a well-documented feature of oceanic flow fields. Based on the analysis of high-resolution 3D numerical simulations, field observations and remote sensing imagery, this study, carried out in Lake Geneva, Western Europe's largest ...

The determination of aquifer parameters is fundamental to groundwater resources assessment. This important topic has received much attention in the literature over many years. Singh (2008) presented a method for determination of parameters for an ideal con ...

River regulation alters the natural flow regime of streams with consequent impacts on terrestrial and aquatic habitats of the riparian zone. The severity of such impacts can be modulated by changing the redistribution rules at water intakes and reservoirs. ...

Horizontal flow constructed wetlands are engineered systems capable of eliminating a wide range of pollutants from the aquatic environment. Nevertheless, poor hydrodynamic behavior is commonly found resulting in preferential pathways and variations in both ...

Small density variations due to low solute concentrations in the stream water commonly exist in streams and rivers. Using laboratory experiments and numerical modeling, we demonstrated that even such small density variations could influence the hyporheic f ...

The pathway of dense river inflows into lakes, which affects the lake water quality, is not accurately predicted by existing models. The pathway of a dense riverine inflow in a lake with a submerged canyon is analyzed based on measurements during a 4-month ...

The hydraulic efficiency of sedimentation basins is reduced by short-circuiting, circulation zones and bottom particle-laden jets. Baffles are used to improve sediment tank performance. In this study, laboratory experiments were used to examine the hydrody ...

An investigation was conducted to detect the change-point years in the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) and precipitation time series in Iran for the period 1951-1999 (49 years). Due to the unavailability of data, the record length of the precipitation tim ...

Coastal reservoir provides the additional storage capacity of freshwater in coastal zone which greatly alleviate the water shortage in stressed areas, and the salinization of reservoir water degrade the utility of coastal reservoir. Salinization may result ...
