The selective radius shift model was used to relate changes in mineral volume due to precipitation/dissolution reactions to changes in hydraulic properties affecting flow in porous media. The model accounts for (i) precipitation/dissolution taking place on ...

Laboratory column experiments involving steady flow in homogeneous soil are often analyzed assuming that the flow is spatially uniform in any plane transverse to the longitudinal axis aligned with the column centerline. Axisymmetric steady flow in such a c ...

Forested soils are being increasingly transformed to agricultural fields in response to growing demands for food crop. This modification of the land use is known to result in deterioration of soil properties, in particular its fertility. To reduce the impa ...

A software tool for the simulation of one-dimensional unsaturated flow and solute transport together with biogeochemical reactions in the vadose zone was developed by integrating a numerical solution of Richards' equation into the geochemical modelling fra ...

Despite numerous applications of physically-based models for incised landscapes, their applicability for overland flow on unchanneled surfaces is not known. This work challenges a widely used landscape evolution model for the case of non-uniform rainfall a ...

Lake Geneva, the largest freshwater lake in Western Europe, is subject to important environmental pressures from its densely populated shores and watershed. To maintain and improve water quality in this lake, as well as in other enclosed or semi‐enclosed b ...

Wintertime deepwater renewal, which is important for heat-oxygen-nutrient exchange in lakes, is traditionally considered to be mainly driven by 1D vertical convective cooling. However, differential cooling between shallow and deep waters can produce densit ...

An analytical model is presented for the analysis of constant flux tests conducted in a phreatic aquifer having a partially penetrating well with a finite thickness skin. The solution is derived in the Laplace transform domain for the drawdown in the pumpi ...

The major objective of this study was to develop further understanding of 3D nearshore hydrodynamics under a variety of wave and tidal forcing conditions. The main tool used was a comprehensive 3D numerical model – combining the flow module of Delft3D with ...

Watertable fluctuations are a characteristic feature of coastal unconfined aquifers. They interact with the vadose zone creating a dynamic effective porosity, for which a new (empirical) expression is proposed based on a dimensionless parameter related to ...

Coastal groundwater systems can have a considerable impact on sediment transport and foreshore evolution in the surf and swash zones. Process-based modeling of wave motion on a permeable beach taking into account wave-aquifer interactions was conducted to ...

A numerical investigation is presented that demonstrates the influence of tides and waves on the transport and transformation of nutrients (NO3-; NH4+; PO43-) in a homogeneous unconfined nearshore aquifer and subsequent fluxes to the sea. Simulations of an ...

Recent attention has focused on the in situ immobilization of uranium by stimulation of dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria (DMRB). The objective of this work was to investigate the effectiveness of this approach in heterogeneous and structured porous me ...

The suitability of residue sand (the coarse fraction remaining from Bayer´s process of bauxite refining) for constructing the surface cover of closed bauxite residue storage areas was investigated. Specifically, its properties as a medium for plant growth ...

This is the second of two papers on the 3D numerical modeling of nearshore hydro- and morphodynamics. In Part I, the focus was on surf and swash zone hydrodynamics in the cross-shore and longshore directions. Here, we consider nearshore processes with an e ...

Combined sewer overflows and stormwater discharges represent an important source of contamination to the environment. However, the harsh environment inside sewers and particular hydraulic conditions during rain events reduce the reliability of traditional ...

Salt marshes are highly productive intertidal wetlands providing important ecological services for maintaining coastal biodiversity, buffering against oceanic storms, and acting as efficient carbon sinks. However, about half of these wetlands have been los ...

Transport of contaminants in coastal aquifers subject to tidal fluctuation is an important topic in hydrogeology as a consequence of the significant development of human activities near the shoreline. Despite this, relatively little work has been done to i ...

The Iberian Peninsula is a water-scarce region that is increasingly reliant on groundwater. Climate change is expected to exacerbate this situation due to projected irregular precipitation patterns and frequent droughts. Here, we utilised convolutional neu ...

The quality of riparian soils and their ability to buffer contaminant releases to aquifers and streams are connected intimately to moisture content and nutrient dynamics, in particular of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). A multi-compartment model – named the R ...
