Unsaturated flow influences both the seawater extent under steady-state conditions and the propagation of tides in coastal aquifers. However, its effects on salt distributions in tidally influenced coastal aquifers are little investigated. The present stud ...

The proportionality between raindrop-driven soil erosion delivery and area of soil exposed to raindrops under a uniform precipitation rate was investigated in terms of individual size classes using laboratory flume experiments. In particular, we examined t ...

A process-based model relevant to landfill and anaerobic digesters was developed, which included a novel approach to biomass transfer between a cellulose-bound biofilm and biomass in the bulk liquid. Model results highlighted the significance of the bacter ...

Coastal aquifers provide an important hydrologic connection between terrestrial freshwater and oceanic seawater. Understanding the water flow and salinity distributions in those aquifers is essential to manage seawater intrusion and regional groundwater re ...

Enhanced reductive dehalogenation is an attractive treatment technology for in situ remediation of chlorinated solvent DNAPL source areas. Reductive dehalogenation is an acid-forming process with hydrochloric acid and also organic acids from fermentation o ...

Build-up of fermentation products and hydrochloric acid at a contaminated site undergoing enhanced reductive dechlorination can result in groundwater acidification. Sub-optimal pH conditions can inhibit microbial activity and lead to reduced dechlorination ...

Sustainable coastal resource management requires sound understanding of interactions between coastal unconfined aquifers and the ocean as these interactions influence the flux of chemicals to the coastal ocean and the availability of fresh groundwater reso ...

Land surface and seawater temperatures fluctuate seasonally. However, their impacts on salinity distribution and water exchange in tidally influenced unconfined aquifers remain unclear. This study examines these impacts based on two‐dimensional numerical s ...

Significant quantities of antibiotics are used in all parts of the globe to treat diseases with bacterial origins. After ingestion, antibiotics are excreted by the patient and transmitted in due course to the aquatic environment. This study examined tempor ...

We examine near-shore and pelagic current variability in Lake Geneva, a large and deep lake in western Europe, using observations from several measurement locations and a three-dimensional numerical model for the period 2014-2016. Linear internal seiche mo ...

Anthropogenic chemical contaminants are found routinely in our water resources. Although most of these compounds are usually present at low concentrations, they are of concern due to their ecotoxicity, antibacterial resistance and potential harm to human h ...

Many organic micropollutants present in wastewater, such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides, are poorly removed in conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). To reduce the release of these substances into the aquatic environment, advanced wastewater ...

Colloid particle size plays an important role in contaminant adsorption and clogging in the hyporheic zone, but it remains unclear how the particle size changes during the transport of colloids. This study investigated the variation of the particle size of ...

Numerical simulations were conducted to examine the effect of episodic rainfall on nearshore groundwater dynamics in a tidally influenced unconfined coastal aquifer, with a focus on both long- (yearly) and short-term (daily) behaviour of submarine groundwa ...

The occurrence of macropores in salt marsh sediments is a natural and ubiquitous phenomenon. Although they are widely assumed to affect pore-water flow in salt marshes significantly, the mechanisms involved and their extent are not well understood. We cond ...

Simulation of biodegradation of chlorinated solvents in dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) source zones requires a model that accounts for the complexity of processes involved and that is consistent with available laboratory studies. This paper describ ...

A two-platform measurement system for realizing airborne thermography of the Lake Surface Water Temperature (LSWT) with ~0.8 m pixel resolution (sub-pixel satellite scale) is presented. It consists of a tethered Balloon Launched Imaging and Monitoring Plat ...

Municipal wastewaters are contaminated by a wide range of chemicals, from surfactants to heavy metals, including pharmaceutical residues, personal care products, various household chemicals, and biocides/pesticides. Their release into the environment, wher ...

Although unsaturated and density-dependent flow affect solute fate in groundwater, they are rarely both included in reactive transport models. Using the operator-splitting method, a new reactive transport model (SUPHRE) was developed by combining a variabl ...

Submesoscale fronts often become visible when the accumulation of biosurfactants in the water surface microlayer causes smooth surfaces, called frontal slicks, to develop. Based on in situ and remotely-sensed data, a frontal slick was documented for the fi ...
