Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) systems have garnered recent widespread attention due to increased accessibility, functionality, and affordability. These systems sense user inputs and typically provide haptic, audio, and visual feedback to ...

This contribution demonstrates the fabrication process of dielectric elastomer transducers (DETs). DETs are stretchable capacitors consisting of an elastomeric dielectric membrane sandwiched between two compliant electrodes. The large actuation strains of ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) enable the realization of energy-efficient and compact actuator systems. DEAs operate at the kilovolt range with typically microampere-level currents and hence minimize thermal losses in comparison to low voltage/high ...

We report on the characterization, active tuning and modeling of the first mode resonance frequency of dielectric electroactive polymer (DEAP) membranes. Unlike other resonance frequency tuning techniques, the tuning procedure presented here requires no ex ...

We present a model and its experimental validation for the optimization of the in-plane displacement of a rigid platform mounted on a compact dielectric elastomer actuator. Unlike the situation in which the mechanical prestretch of the membrane is maintain ...

An experimental study of the dc breakdown voltage for planar MEMS interdigitated aluminum electrodes with gaps ranging from 10 to 500 micron is presented. Unlike most research on the breakdown in MEMS electrodes that was performed at atmospheric pressure, ...

This paper reports on an accurate and rapid method to compute the onset voltage for a single or for an array of electrospray emitters with complex geometries and on the correlation of the simulation with experimental data. This method permits the exact det ...

The dataset supporting 'Fiber pumps for wearable fluidic systems', published in Science in March 2023. In this work, we present a fluidic pump in the form of a flexible and stretchable tube. These tubes - or 'fiber pumps' - can generate significant fluidic ...

We present an automated system to measure the degradation of compliant electrodes used in dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) over millions of cycles. Electrodes for DEAs generally experience biaxial linear strains of more than 10%. The decrease in elect ...

The application of electrical fields within a microfluidic channel enables many forms of manipulation necessary for lab-on-a-chip devices. Patterning electrodes inside the microfluidic channel generally requires multi-step optical lithography. Here, we uti ...

Cells regulate their behavior in response to mechanical strains. Cell cultures to study mechanotransuction are typically cm2 in area, far too large to monitor single cell response. We have developed an array of dielectric elastomer microactuators as a tool ...

The complex magnetic field of the permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source MEFISTO located at the University of Berne has been numerically simulated. For the first time the magnetized volume qualified for electron cyclotron resonance ...

For dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) to find more widespread adoption in commercial products, a better understanding of their durability is needed. By determining the different mechanisms contributing to ageing and breakdown in DEAs, new methods for i ...

Suction cups are the light bulbs of robotics and automation. They are simple, reliable, yet energy-hungry, and require a bulky and noisy vacuum infrastructure. This work reports Electroadhesion (EA) Suction Cups: soft, silent, monolithic, electrically-driv ...

MEMS-based electric propulsion (EP) presents several advantages over conventional EP approaches, including scalability, redundancy, fine thrust control, low thrust noise, and reduced operation voltage. Small spacecraft (1- 100 kg) in particular stand to be ...

We demonstrate the fabrication of fully printed thin dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), reducing the operation voltage below 300V while keeping good actuation strain. DEAs are soft actuators capable of strains greater than 100% and response times below ...

The sense of touch is underused in today’s virtual reality systems due to lack of wearable, soft, mm-scale transducers to generate dynamic mechanical stimulus on the skin. Extremely thin actuators combining both high force and large displacement are a long ...

Microfabricated electrospray thrusters could revolutionize the spacecraft industry by providing efficient propulsion capabilities to micro and nano satellites (1–100 kg). We present the modeling, design, fabrication and characterization of a new generation ...

We present a simple open-loop method to suppress the viscoelastic drift of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs). Viscoelastic creep is one of the drawbacks of DEAs, especially when made with acrylic elastomer membranes (VHB). This leads to a time-dependen ...

This article presents the design, fabrication, and characterization of a soft biomimetic robotic fish based on dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) that swims by body and/or caudal fin (BCF) propulsion. BCF is a promising locomotion mechanism that potenti ...
