Two-dimensional flat-band systems have recently attracted considerable interest due to the rich physics unveiled by emergent phenomena and correlated electronic states at van Hove singularities. However, the difficulties in electrically detecting the flat- ...

Moiré superlattice in twisted bilayer graphene has been proven to be a versatile platform for exploring exotic quantum phases. Extensive investigations have been invoked focusing on the zero-magnetic-field phase diagram at the magic twist angle around $\th ...

It has been well established experimentally that the interplay of electronic correlations and spin-orbit interactions in Ir4+ and Ir5+ oxides results in insulating J(eff) = 1/2 and J(eff) = 0 ground states, respectively. However, in compounds where the str ...

The edges of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have attracted much interest due to their potentially strong influence on GNR electronic and magnetic properties. Here we report the ability to engineer the microscopic edge termination of high-quality GNRs via hydr ...

The 8-Pmmn borophene, a boron analog of graphene, hosts tilted and anisotropic massless Dirac fermion quasiparticles owing to the presence of a distorted graphenelike sublattice. First-principles calculations show that stacked 8-Pmmn borophene is transform ...

Recent advances in large-scale synthesis of graphene and other 2D materials have underscored the importance of local defects such as dislocations and grain boundaries (GBs), and especially their tendency to alter the electronic properties of the material. ...

The recently discovered type-II Weyl points appear at the boundary between electron and hole pockets. Type-II Weyl semimetals that host such points are predicted to exhibit a new type of chiral anomaly and possess thermodynamic properties very different fr ...

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exist in two polymorphs, referred to as 1T and 1H, depending on the coordination sphere of the transition metal atom. The broken octahedral and trigonal prismatic symmetries lead to different cry ...

We applied first principles molecular dynamics (MD) technique to study structure, dynamics, and magnetic interactions of the

Gd^{3+}

aqua ion dissolved in liquid water, a prototypical system for Gd-based complexes used as contrast agents for magnetic res ...

Establishing the physical mechanism governing exchange interactions is fundamental for exploring exotic phases such as quantum spin liquids in real materials. In this Letter, we address exchange interactions in Sr2CuTexW1-xO6, a series of double perovskite ...

Atomically precise tailoring of graphene can enable unusual transport pathways and new nanometer-scale functional devices. Here we describe a recipe for the controlled production of highly regular "5-5-8" line defects in graphene by means of simultaneous e ...

On-surface synthesis has recently emerged as an effective route towards the atomically precise fabrication of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) of controlled topologies and widths. However, whether and to what degree structural disorder occurs in the resulting s ...

The recently synthesized Ag3LiIr2O6 has been proposed as a Kitaev magnet in proximity to the quantum spin liquid phase. We explore its microscopic Hamiltonian and magnetic ground state using many-body quantum chemistry methods and exact diagonalization tec ...

Nuclear magnetic relaxation in the presence of paramagnetic centres has gained increasing interest in recent years partly due to its importance for contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging. Rational design of new more efficient agents is possible as a ...

Multiple mechanisms for extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) found in many topologically nontrivial/trivial semimetals have been theoretically proposed, but experimentally it is unclear which mechanism is responsible in a particular sample. In this pape ...

We investigate the evolution of both the occupied and unoccupied electronic structure in representative compounds of the infinitely adaptive superlattice series (Sb2)m−Sb2Te3 (m=0–3) by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and time-delayed tw ...

Over the past decades, investigations of the anomalous low-energy electronic properties of ZrTe5 have reached a wide array of conclusions. An open question is the growth method's impact on the stoichiometry of ZrTe5 samples, especially given the very small ...

Collective modes are responsible for the emergence of novel quantum phases in topological materials. In the quasi-one dimensional (1D) Weyl semimetal (TaSe4)(2)I < i , a charge density wave (CDW) opens band gaps at the Weyl points, thus turning the system ...

Atomic-scale disorder in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides is often accompanied by local magnetic moments, which can conceivably induce long-range magnetic ordering into intrinsically non-magnetic materials. Here, we demonstrate the signatur ...

We investigate the bulk band structures and the surface states of Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 topological insulators using first-principles many-body perturbation theory based on the GW approximation. The quasiparticle self-energy corrections introduce significant c ...
