The moisture resistance of friction-welded wood joints can be improved by applying bio-based bonding additives. Several biomolecules including tannic acid, organosolv lignin from hardwood, kraft lignin from softwood, and derivates thereof, were investigate ...

The theory of discrete variational mechanics has its roots in the optimal control literature of the 1960's. The past ten years have seen a major development of discrete variational mechanics and corresponding numerical integrators, due largely to pioneerin ...

Spurred by developments in digital fabrication, there has been an increase in the application of the Integral Mechanical Attachment (IMA) technique in timber plate structures. Despite its increase in popularity, there have been very few systematic investig ...

Timber folded surface structures assembled using semi-rigid multiple tab and slot joints (MTSJ) have been shown to form feasible structural systems with high load bearing potential. However, for their further development and use on large building scales, a ...

In today's shift from steel and concrete construction toward bio-based materials such as timber, reliance on forests for construction materials is growing. However, concerns are rising regarding the type and amount of wood our forests will produce in the f ...

Geometrically complex timber plate structures using wood-wood connections are increasingly designed thanks to digital fabrication. Whereas their fabrication has been automated using computer-aided design programming, research focused on the development of ...

Structural behaviour of timber folded surface systems greatly depends on the connections ability to transfer the occurring forces between the adjacent elements and finally to the supports. This paper focuses on multiple tab-and-slot joints (MTSJ), where di ...

The current study uses knowledge from digital architecture, computer science, engineering informatics, and structural engineering to formulate an algorithmic framework for integrated Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) of Integ ...

This work investigates the development of a Curved Origami Prototype made with timber panels. In the last fifteen years the timber industry has developed new, large size, timber panels. Composition and dimensions of these panels and the possibility of mill ...

Timber Fabric structures (TFS) initiate from a correspondence between textile principles and recent industrial developments in producing cross laminated timber panels. Several individual timber strips are interlaced according to a pattern and result in an ...

In digital timber construction, scanning technologies and point cloud data are widely used due to the accessibility of affordable 3D sensors, photogrammetry, and userfriendly CAD tools. While typically not employed for accuracy checks in timber fabrication ...

This paper analyses the potential of different possible folded form topologies for generating timber folded surface structures. The main advantage of such structures lies primarily in the realm of ecology and sustainability. By offering an integral way of ...

The research project “Structural Timber Fabric: Applying Textile Principles on Building Scale” follows an innovative and experimental approach to develop novel lightweight timber structures. It examines structural and aesthetic qualities of textiles and te ...

Recent advances in timber construction have led to the realization of complex timber plate structures assembled with wood-wood connections. Although advanced numerical modelling tools have been developed to perform their structural analysis, limited experi ...

Vibration tests were performed on 3 large-scale timber slabs using wood-wood connections with a span of 8.1 meters. 10 impulsive vibration tests per specimen were performed to estimate the initial natural frequency. Vibrations were triggered using a hammer ...

The ambitious goal of the ongoing research at IBOIS, the Laboratory of timber constructions at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is to develop a next generation of timber constructions made out of innovative timber-derived products, throu ...

This paper aims to characterize the force-deformation response of through-tenon wood-wood connections subjected to tensile loads. Four beech LVL timber specimen groups with variations in the fiber orientation, and the tab insertion angle (45°, and 60°) are ...

This paper aims to characterize the force–deformation response of through-tenon wood-wood connections subjected to out-of-plane (flatwise) loads. Six beech LVL timber specimen groups with variations in the fiber orientation (parallel and perpendicular) and ...

Friction welding of wood is a fast and adhesive-free bonding technology for the production of timber joints with good mechanical characteristics making this type of connection interesting for applications in timber construction. However, the moisture stabi ...
