Beyond the core features of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, i.e. amyloid pathology, tau-related neurodegeneration and microglia response, multiple other molecular alterations and pathway dysregulations have been observed in AD. Their inter-individual v ...

Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) severely affect patients and their caregivers, and are associated with worse long-term outcomes. This study tested the hypothesis that altered protein levels in blood plasma could serve as biomarkers of NPS; and that altered ...

Aims/hypothesis In islets from individuals with type 2 diabetes and in islets exposed to chronic elevated glucose, mitochondrial energy metabolism is impaired. Here, we studied early metabolic changes and mitochondrial adaptations in human beta cells durin ...

Introduction: Quantitative proteomics using mass spectrometry is performed via label-free or label-based approaches. Labeling strategies rely on the incorporation of stable heavy isotopes by metabolic, enzymatic, or chemical routes. Isobaric labeling uses ...

Glucose sensing in pancreatic D-cells depends on oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondria-derived signals that promote insulin secretion. Using mass spectrometry-based phosphoproteo-mics to search for downstream effectors of glucose-dependent signal tran ...

The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.Protein biomarker discovery in human biological fluids has greatly developed over the past two decades thanks to technological advances allowing deeper ...

Purpose Studying the plasma proteome of control versus constitutionally thin (CT) individuals, exposed to overfeeding, may give insights into weight-gain management, providing relevant information to the clinical entity of weight-gain resistant CT, and dis ...

Mitochondria constantly undergo fusion and fission events, referred as mitochondrial dynamics, which determine mitochondrial architecture and bioenergetics. Cultured cell studies demonstrate that mitochondrial dynamics are acutely regulated by phosphorylat ...

Although neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common and severely affect older people with cognitive decline, little is known about their underlying molecular mechanisms and relationships with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of this study was to identify ...

Background: Large-scale proteomic studies have to deal with unwanted variability, especially when samples originate from different centers and multiple analytical batches are needed. Such variability is typically added throughout all the steps of a clinica ...

Background Neuroinflammation may contribute to psychiatric symptoms in older people, in particular in the context of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We sought to identify systemic and central nervous system (CNS) inflammatory alterations associated with neuropsy ...

Introduction Biological fluids are routine samples for diagnostic testing and monitoring. Blood samples are typically measured because of their moderate invasive collection and high information content on health and disease. Several body fluids, such as ce ...

Milk is a complex biological fluid composed mainly of water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and diverse bioactive factors. Human milk represents a unique tailored source of nutrients that adapts during lactation to the specific needs of the developing in ...

The electrochemically induced mass spectrometric tagging of cysteines by substituted hydroquinones was studied for peptides in a classical electrospray solvent (i.e., MeOH/H2O/AcOH 50/49/1). The tagging efficiency was tested with different hydroquinone com ...

The on-line electrochemical tagging (EC-tagging) of cysteine residues in proteins during mass spectrometry is studied to probe the cysteine environment. Benzoquinone probes electrogenerated at a microspray electrode react with the thiol functions of the pr ...

Background and objectives Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common in older people with cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD). No biomarkers to detect the related pathology or predict the clinical evolution of NPS are available yet. This stud ...

Modification strategies targeting specific amino acids in proteins are widespread in proteomic analysis. Cysteine residues have received deep consideration in view of their nucleophilic properties and their occurrence in the proteome. A recently developed ...

On-line electrogeneration of mass tags in a microspray emitter is used to quantify the number of cysteine groups in a given peptide. A finite-element simulation of the multi-step process yields the relative distribution and concentration of tags, untagged ...

Multitrack electrospray chips (MTEC) were fabricated by UV-photoablation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates. They are composed of an array of up to six microchannels that are successively used as electrospray ionization (ESI) emitters for mass ...

Gluten proteins are storage proteins in wheat that exhibit a certain resistance to gastrointestinal digestion. To explore solutions to cope with accidental ingestion of gluten in individuals suffering from gluten-related disorders, it is essential to monit ...
