Lignin is a promising candidate for the replacement of fossil-based materials, due to its natural abundance and aromatic structure. This same structure poses major challenges to lignin's exploitation for material development. The harsh conditions generally ...

CO2 catalytic hydrogenation to CO will likely be an important part of CO2 mitigation and valorization processes. Recently, we have developed materials containing surface-formed Cu-Al spinel that act as active and stable catalysts for this reaction. Here, t ...

The design of controllable artificial microbial consortia has attracted considerable interest in recent years to capitalize on the inherent advantages in comparison to monocultures such as the distribution of the metabolic burden by division of labor, the ...

Method for preparing an acetal-protected sugar involving the step of reacting a diol group of a sugar selected from the group consisting of an aldopentose and an aldohexose with one or two compounds of formula (Ia) and/or (Ib) in the presence of a homogeno ...

Using acetal-stabilized lignin we performed a truly steady state continuous high-yielding lignin depolymerization (45% monophenolics using Ni/C), which offered a window into challenges and opportunities that will be faced when processing this feedstock. Wi ...

We demonstrate a catalytic process for xylitol production based on the volatility and unique reactivity of diformylxylose (DFX), which can be produced at near theoretical yield from biomass and, contrary to xylose, can be easily purified by distillation. T ...

Tailoring the interfacial sites between metals and metal oxides can be an essential tool in designing heterogeneous catalysts. These interfacial sites play a vital role in many renewable applications, for instance, catalytic CO2 reduction. Postsynthesis de ...

Postimpregnation of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) stabilized within hyper-cross-linked polystyrene with sodium or potassium hydroxides of optimal concentration was found to significantly increase the catalytic activity for the partial hydrogenation of the C–C tri ...

In many plant species, the acetate fraction is the fourth most prominent fraction by weight after cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, and can be easily extracted as a single stable molecule, acetic acid, at high yields. Despite this, upgrading the acetate ...

Described is a compound having the structure (I), (II) or (V), Formulae(I), (II), (V), wherein R1 is -H, -CH2OH or -CH(OH)CH2OH; R2 is -H, -OH, or -CH2OH; R3 is -H, -OH, or -CH2OH; n is 0 or 1; p is 0 or 1; R10 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon moiety with 1 to ...

We studied and compared the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) and depolymerization of aldehyde-stabilized lignin and 4-propylguaiacol (PG), a model lignin monomer. We demonstrated by liquid phase adsorption that PG HDO catalyzed by Ru/C can be achieved in isooctane ...

Here we report that gamma-valerolactone (GVL), a biomass-derived solvent, can be used to facilitate the mild pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. An 80% GVL, 20% water solvent system was used to pretreat hardwood at the mild temperature of 120 degrees ...

Transmission of viruses through contact with contaminated surfaces is an important pathway for the spread of infections. Antiviral surface coatings are useful to minimize such risks. Current state-of-the-art approaches toward antiviral surface coatings eit ...

Certain metal oxides exhibit unique phases and associated properties that can generally only be accessed via high temperature treatments. However, high temperature processes usually lead to surface reconstruction and pore collapse, which reduces the active ...

Hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells are promising as an energy conversion technology, but require platinum group metal electrocatalysts for their application. A Ni-based hydrogen oxidation reaction catalyst is now shown to exhibit unprecedented electroc ...

Compound of the general formula (Ia), (Ib) and (Ic) R50 and R60 are different form each other and are selected from the group consisting of -R70, -ZR70, -Z-OH, -Z-NH2, -Z-SH, -Z-OC(O)R70, -OC(O)R70, - COOH and its corresponding salts, -C(O)NH2, -C(O)NH-R70 ...

The chemical complexity of lignin remains a major challengeforlignin valorization into commodity and fine chemicals. A knowledgeof the lignin features that favor its valorization and which plantsproduce such lignins can be used in plant selection or to eng ...

The present invention relates to a compound of the general formula (I), and (II)wherein one of R11 and R12 is hydrogen and the other is -CH2-R70, and one of R13 and R14 is hydrogen and the other is -CH2-R71, or wherein one of R11 and R12 is hydrogen and th ...

All three natural polymers of biomass and the monomer platforms derived from them present multiple avenues to develop products from specialty to bulk markets, which could serve as entry points into the industry for bio-based sustainable materials. However, ...
