In this study, we compare the electrical and optical signal transduction of nanoscale biosensors based on single -walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Solution processable single-stranded (ss) DNA-wrapped SWCNTs were used for the fabrication of the distinct s ...

Cells are able to perceive complex mechanical cues across both the micro- and nanoscale which can influence their development. Whilst causative effects between surface topography and cellular function can be demonstrated, the variability in materials used ...

Superconducting resonators are widely used in fields spanning from quantum computing to electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. With the goal of realizing superconducting resonators, a broad variety and combination of superconducting materials, substra ...

Implantable devices for localized and controlled drug release are important, e.g., for therapies of cancer and chronic pain. However, most of the existing active implants are limited by the usage of nonbiodegradable materials; thus, surgery is needed to ex ...

Sensorineural hearing loss is a profound form of deafness, arising from damage to cochlear hair cells, which can be treated by limited clinical options such as cochlear implants. However, the implantation procedure carries the inherent risk of electrode in ...

Polymer-derived ceramics (PDC) have recently gained increased interest in the field of bioceramics. Among PDC's, carbon-rich silicon oxycarbide ceramics (SiOC) possess good combined electrical and mechanical properties. Their durability in aggressive envir ...

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have proven to be a robust power source for efficiently converting environmental mechanical energy into electricity. Triboelectric technology experienced substantial growth in the past few years, especially in the field ...

Randomly spread fibroblasts on fibronectin-coated elastomeric membranes respond to cyclic strain by a varying degree of focal adhesion assembly and actin reorganization. We speculated that the individual shape of the cells, which is linked to cytoskeletal ...

Using the combinatorial material synthesis approach, materials libraries can be produced in one experiment that contain up to several thousand samples on a single substrate. In order to identify optimized materials in an efficient way using screening metho ...

With the rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the emergence of 5G, traditional silicon-based electronics no longer fully meet market demands such as nonplanar application scenarios due to mechanical mismatch. This provides unprecedented op ...

We propose an original approach called a "stencil-masked ion implantation process" for performing a spatially localized synthesis of a limited number of Si nanocrystals within a thin SiO2 layer. In this process, the SiO2 layer is irradiated with 1 keV sili ...

The authors report the fabrication and characterization of chemiresistive sensors, composed of a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), styrene‐ethylene‐ran‐butylene‐styrene, and a high‐structure carbon black (CB) targeted for detecting hydrocarbons at or near roo ...

A novel combination of ink-jet printing (IJP) and micro-transfer moulding (μ-TM) for high-resolution, heterogeneous material microstructuring is demonstrated. First, IJP is used to accurately fill the micro-cavities in an elastomeric mould, thus avoiding t ...

Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) are a very attractive class of materials due to their excellent properties such as resistance to high temperatures and harsh environments, adjustability of mechanical and functional behavior, and compatibility with a broad r ...

Active control of ion transport plays important roles in chemical and biological analytical processes. Nanofluidic systems hold the promise for such control through electrostatic interaction between ions and channel surfaces. Most existing experiments rely ...

We provide a common theoretical framework reuniting specific models for the Ca2+-alginate system and general reaction diffusion theory along with experimental validation on a microfluidic chip. As a starting point, we use a set of nonlinear, partial differ ...

Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) is a digital additive manufacturing technique that uses a pulsed laser to transfer various materials from a donor film to a receiver substrate placed in close proximity. In this work, we investigate the transfer of SU- ...

Photocharge generation and formation of long-lived charge carriers are relevant in photosynthesis, photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and organic electronics. A better understanding of the factors that determine these processes in synthetic polymer semiconduct ...

We achieved parallel nanoscale patterning of ferroelectric complex oxides by pulsed laser deposition through a nanostencil (i.e., through a pattern of apertures in a thin free-standing membrane). Ordered arrays of nanostructured barium titanate (BaTiO3) we ...

In an implantable electrode, such as a pacemaker electrode, fibrotic tissue formation due to a foreign body reaction is an important challenge affecting the efficiency to transmit the electrical signal of the device. The chemical inertness, biocompatibilit ...
