This study addresses the thermo economic assessment of a biomass gasification, gas cleaning and energy conversion process, with particular attention given to tar control and the communication of the process design rationale. Product distributions were esti ...

Transport applications are a major global source of greenhouse gas emissions and the production of fuels that are renewable and neutral in CO2 is an important issue in chemical process research and development. Contrary to the biological routes that produce bioethanol and -diesel on industrial scale through fermentation or esterification, 2nd generation biofuels obtained through thermochemical processing of lignocellulosic and waste biomass by means of gasification and fuel reforming are expected to be trul

A detailed thermo-economic model considering different technological alternatives for thermochemical production of Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) from lignocellulosic biomass is presented. First, candidate technology for processes based on biomass gasificatio ...

Environmental impacts of emerging technologies such as the production of biofuels have become an important concern. To assess these impacts, life cycle assessment (LCA) is a well-established and widely used method. However, conventional LCAs for these technologies are generally based on an average technology at lab- or pilot-scale. Therefore, the changes in process design, future installation size and technology evolution are not considered. Moreover, it is not possible for engineers to use the LCA as a des

This paper addresses a methodology for the optimal conceptual design of thermochemical fuel production processes from biomass. A decomposed modelling approach with separate energy-flow, energy-integration and economic models are coupled with a multi-object ...

Models for hydrolysis, fermentation and concentration process, production and utilization of biogas as well as lignin gasification are developed to calculate the heat demand of ethanol production process and the amounts of heat and power generated from res ...

In the public and scientific debate on biofuels, ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass is generally the most popular alternative that may allow for a sustainable production. Compared to thermochemical processing of biomass which assures a complete conversio ...

It is the aim of the present invention to provide a system and a process for hydrothermal SNG production from waste biomass having a design of the product separation that not only considers the grid quality specifications for SNG, but also the recovery of ...

Among renewable energy sources biomass plays a major role. Several paths for improving the conversion of biomass with minimum burden on the environment are being pursued worldwide. This paper reviews some of the most recent results from research at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne. On the theoretical and experimental sides it covers the improvement of biogas combustion engines using combustion prechambers both with spark ignition or autoignition in order to reduce the emissions while ke

This paper investigates different design strategies and process layouts for upgrading crude synthetic natural gas (SNG) produced from lignocellulosic biomass to grid quality. The design problem is outlined by studying the involved key aspects with respect ...

Based on a previously developed thermo-economic process model, this paper presents a detailed design study for the polygeneration of Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG), power and heat by catalytic hydrothermal gasification of biomass and biomass wastes in supercr ...

Two biomass gasification concepts, i.e. indirectly heated, steam blown fluidised bed gasification and directly heated, air blown fixed bed gasification are modelled with adjusted equilibrium equations, their energy requirements are integrated and an exergy ...

Lignocellulosic biomass is considered as one of the most promising feedstocks for producing fuel ethanol because of its global availability and environmental benefits of its use. In this paper, the process of lignocellulosic ethanol production was investig ...

After a brief review of the current research on the production of synthetic natural gas (SNG) from lignocellulosic biomass by gasification and methanation, this paper presents detailed thermo-economic process optimisation of the polygeneration of SNG, power and heat. Based on a previously developed model, all suitable candidate configurations of a superstructure of promising technologies for the individual conversion steps are optimised with respect to the overall efficiency and investement cost with an evo

The conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to methane is a promising way to distribute a renewable resource as a versatile energy vector in an existing grid. Potentially more efficient than the production of liquid fuels, it can be used as Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) as automotive fuel or in combined heat and power (CHP) applications at any scale. Based on a detailed thermo-economic process model for the thermochemical production of SNG (Gassner and Maréchal, Biomass and Bioenergy 33 (2009), 1587-1604), the

Hydrothermal gasification of biomass in supercritical water is one of the rare pathways that potentially allows for a complete conversion of wet waste biomass into Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG). This paper summarises an extensive process design study and discusses some key aspects of the process integration and, in particular, the influence of the feedstock on the optimal process design and its performances. It thereby demonstrates that the process design and performance is not only influenced by available te

The present paper investigates the prospects of process integration of the biogenic production of crude synthetic natural gas (SNG) and its upgrade to grid quality. At the example of a separation by means of a membrane cascade, a holistic design approach targeting the overall process performances is presented. Compared to a design obtained from an isolated approach, it is shown that a considerable reduction of the size and cost of the separation system is possible if a tight process integration is considere
