This paper presents a method to optimize two linear actuator configurations. The method is stochastic and combines a genetic algorithm (GA) and FEM (finite element method) model generated with the commercial software FEMM. The optimization is performed in ...

The paper presents a method to determine hysteresis losses in synchronous permanent magnet (PM) motors. The method comprises four steps: (1) experimental determination of the B-H loop, (2) analytical modeling of the B-H loop by applying different models, (3) analytical modeling of the hysteresis losses, and (4) determination of the hysteresis losses in a synchronous PM motor, and results' verification using an experiment and an FEM software. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper presents an analytical formula for the permanent magnet (PM) magnetomotive force (MMF) in a slotted PM rotating motor. To derive this formula, an analytical 2D solution of Poisson's equation for the equivalent slotless configuration using the Fourier series is applied. The formula comprises the case when the PM poles are not symmetrical. The obtained PM MMF can be used to determine the magnetic field using the slot modulation

The paper presents an original method to determine the 2D magnetic field in a square magnetic circuit. To do it, the method of Schwarz-Christoffel mapping is used. This mapping is a special kind of the conformal mappings, applicable to polygonal 2D configu ...

The paper presents an optimization design of an in-wheel BLDC motor for a kick scooter. The optimization is performed using a genetic optimization tool combined with a FEM commercial software. The new contributions of the paper are: (i) introduction of three operating modes for which the motor is optimized with a reduced number of FEM simulations and (ii) new approach to simultaneously maximize the energetic efficiency, minimize the cogging and respect the thermal constraint.

This paper describes a new method to estimate the standstill position of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM). The method is based on the anisotropic properties of permanent magnets and is therefore referred to as Magnetic Anisotropy Method (MAM). The MAM method differs significantly from all standard standstill position detection methods previously presented in the literature. The proposed method is totally independent of saliency and saturation effects and can therefore be used in many types of PMSM

The paper presents a detailed analysis and comparison of two types of non-axial windings used for slotless permanent magnet (PM) motors: zigzag and rhombic ones. The motor mathematical model is verified by 3D FEM software. Finally, the motor prototype is presented.

The aim of a European project Nephron+ is design of a wearable artificial kidney device (WAKD). This paper is focused on design of the corresponding ultralow-hemolysis continuous-operation blood pump. Accurate specifications and operating principle of the pump are determined; a first, non-optimal configuration of an electromechanical actuator which will be used to pump the blood is designed; its prototype is presented along with the corresponding driving electronic circuit; finally, based on the measurement

The paper proposes a new method to determine the tooth cogging force in a brushless DC (BLDC) motor which is used in a hard-disk application. This force might be a source of tooth vibrations and motor noise. In the new method, the permanent-magnet (PM) pol ...

This paper presents a complete method for optimizing a linear actuator in order to perform its sensorless speed control. The optimizer maximizes the difference of inductances between two positions of interest in order to perform the efficient position detection. The paper shows how the modifications made on a normal E-shaped reluctant actuator achieve the objective of sensorless position detection and speed control.

We present an analytical solution for the magnetic field, induced eddy currents, and the corresponding losses generated in the rotor of a slotless permanent-magnet (PM) motor. The field excitation is a current sheet placed at the stator interior surface. T ...

The paper presents a simplified analytical method to design a small two-pole slotless brushless dc motor. Using only a few approximations, the motor analytical model is formulated to generate a system of equations. The system can be solved analytically, pr ...

A sensorless position detection technique for a permanent magnet (PM) motor with non-salient rotor is presented. It is shown that the phase self inductances and resistances measured at higher frequencies vary slightly with the rotor position. The origin of ...

This paper presents a method to model and optimize brushless dc motor for a solar airplane. In order to obtain the optimal solution for the given specifications, all free parameters are analyzed globally in one go. For this, the commercial optimization sof ...

This paper presents a method to dynamically filter the position and the speed of a linear actuator during its closing. A previous paper presented position detection without external sensor but, by simply deriving it, the corresponding speed was not usable ...

We present an original analytical determination of the force acting on the moving coil in an electromagnetic actuator. The actuator magnetic field is solved analytically by Schwarz-Christoffel (SC) mapping. The SC integral is solved analytically using the ...
