Despite the advances on the understanding and modelling of shear and punching shear failures, the application of actual design models to some stations remains still complex. In addition, other significant phenomena such as compressive membrane action and m ...

Over the past decades, an increasing number of bridges with integral abutment have been built in Switzerland. This type of bridge offers various advantages over standard bridges with abutments, equipped with expansion joints and bearings that require regul ...

Prestressing in flat slabs helps in controlling deformations and cracking under service loads and allows reducing the required slab thickness, leading thus to more slender structures and being therefore an economic solution for long spans. However, as a co ...

Over the past two decades, a substantial amount of research has investigated the effects of thermal loads associated with the geothermal operation of energy piles on their mechanical response. Based on this research, consensus about the need for considerin ...

Punching reinforcement systems have significantly developed in recent years as they allow enhancing the punching resistance of slab-column connections as well as their deformation capacity. These systems, with varying geometry and layout, normally consist ...

A general calculation model is developed and described starting from the effective load-carrying mechanisme of edge- and point supported (punching shear) slabs. This leads to a simplified and practical design process for shear. This method, originally developed for the new Swiss code SIA 262, is explained and compared to the DIN 1045-1 code through parametric studies and application examples.

Cut-and-cover tunnels behavior at ultimate limit state depends strongly on the interactions between the foundation soil, the backfill and the reinforced concrete structure. Characterization of the potential failure modes of these types of structure necessi ...

In the recent years, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) was applied with very promising results to monitor cracks in reinforced concrete structures. However, current DIC measurements present some limitations to characterize the existing crack (already present ...

Previous researches on punching of post-tensioned slabs have shown a number of phenomena significantly influencing their strength and behaviour. However, no general agreement is yet found on a physical theory (either in codes of practice or in design model ...

In 1960, Kinnunen and Nylander presented a mechanical approach for calculating the punching resistance of slab-column connections. That approach accounted for the response of a slab sector and considered failure to occur on the basis of the strains develop ...

Structural R/C cores are a popular and efficient choice as lateral-load resisting system in medium to tall buildings. The walls of the cores typically present large openings providing access to elevators placed within them. Shear induced by lateral forces ...

This paper presents the results of an experimental test series on the soil-structure-pavement interaction in the vicinity of the transition slab at the end of an integral bridge. The main function of transition slabs is to ease the transition between the b ...

Reinforced concrete flat slabs are a common structural system for cast-in-place concrete slabs. Failures in punching shear near the column regions are typically governing at ultimate. In case no punching shear or integrity reinforcement is placed, failures ...

The design of reinforced concrete flat slabs can be governed at failure by punching shear close to concentrated loads or columns. Geometrical features, reinforcement layouts and in-plane forces provided by external vertical elements, such as shear walls, c ...

In order to address how new knowledge influences design expressions, design codes have in most cases become significantly more complex over the last decades. However, this tendency is leading to codes that are too complicated for preliminary design but sti ...

Design formulations for calculation of bond strength in structural concrete members usually include a number of parameters such as the stress acting in the reinforcement, the concrete cover and the diameter of the reinforcing bars. These parameters are act ...

Due to the limited construction experiences as well as to the absence of clear and consolidated design provisions for design of Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC), the application of this material in practice is still very limited. In this paper, the result ...

As an outcome of a recent European research project, the modelling of the response of flat slab structures for seismic and cyclic loading was the object of a blind competition. No other blind tests are available in the literature on this topic. The test re ...
