In this paper, the strength of prestressed girders with low amount of shear reinforcement or with defective anchorage is investigated by means of a test programme carried out at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne on 10 prestressed and 2 reinforced concrete girders (10 m long, 0.78 m high). The results show that if certain conditions are fulfilled, these structures can perform suitably and provide the expected strength according to plastic design approaches. For comparisons, the elastic-plastic str

This paper investigates a reliable design approach for reinforced concrete panels subjected to the combined action of in-plane shear and out-of-plane bending moments, which develop in webs of boxgirder bridges and similar structures. Neglecting this intera ...

A mechanical explanation of the phenomenon of punching shear in slabs without transverse reinforcement is presented on the basis of the opening of a critical shear crack. It leads to the formulation of a new failure criterion for punching shear based on th ...

A traditional difficulty in the understanding of the role of the various shear transfer actions in members without transverse reinforcement has been a lack of detailed measurements on the development of shear cracking and their associated kinematics during ...

The shear resistance of RC slabs without shear reinforcement subjected to concentrated loads near linear support is usually calibrated on the base of tests on one – way slabs with rectangular cross section. However, the actual behavior of slabs subjected t ...

As the behavior and design of steel fiber reinforced concrete slabs subjected to punching still remain an area of concern, the present work aims to provide a further contribution to the knowledge on punching behavior of slabs without transverse reinforcement. The results of an experimental program on nine slab–column connections are presented with emphasis on the influence of size effect and steel fiber content. Experimental results show that fibers can significantly increase both strength and deformation c

Many building codes rely on empirical formulations with respect to the punching shear design provisions. Such empirical equations are typically calibrated on the basis of laboratory tests performed on simplified geometries (usually isolated specimens) with ...

A mechanical model is presented for predicting the momentrotation relationship of interior slab-column connections without transverse reinforcement when subjected to seismically induced drifts. The model accounts explicitly for the three load-transfer acti ...

This paper investigates the load-carrying mechanisms and the strength of thin-webbed, post-tensioned beams failing by crushing of the web. The shear strength in these members is significantly reduced because of the state of cracking in the web and because ...

This paper presents the initial findings from a research project initiated in Switzerland with the objective of developing a new traffic load model for highway bridges that quantifies safety reserves more uniformly. The various proposed new load models and their performance when compared to results from traffic simulations are presented. A particular attention is directed towards the full- probabilistic reliability analyses and the interpretation of the results, to demonstrate how these analyses facilita

The revision of a code is a long-term project that shall fulfil several aims, comprising the enhancement of the ease-of-use and incorporating updated state-of-the-art. With respect to the revision of Eurocode 2 concerning the punching shear provisions, thi ...

Bridges suspended by prestressed steel tubes. The structural system of suspended girders was used for bridge structures as early as the beginning of the 19th century. Because of the technological advancements in the field of prestressing and due to the high structural efficiency, this structural concept has regained significance in recent years. A promsing application consists of the combination of a simple suspended steel structure with prestressing technology.

This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental campaign on 16 flat-slab specimens with and without punching shear reinforcement. The tests aimed to investigate the influence of a set of mechanical and geometrical parameters on the punching sh ...

Model Code 2010 (MC2010) has presented a deep review on punching shear design with respect to previous versions of Model Code (1978, 1990). These changes have been motivated by the fact that MC2010 is grounded on a physical theory rather than on empirical ...

This paper discusses on the required level of simplicity for suitable modelling of structural concrete. Traditional equilibrium-based approaches (as strut-and-tie models) are too coarse in some cases, as they account for the cracking state of concrete in a ...

Most research efforts in the past related to the punching resistance of reinforced concrete slabs have concentrated on the response of internal slab-column connections, where significant advances in the state-of-the-art have been performed. Other than inte ...

Ultra-High Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) is a material characterised by significantly improved mechanical and durability properties compared to other concretes. In recent years, an important research effort has been made to identify approp ...
