In this work we present a new fabrication technique to print thin dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), reducing the driving voltage below 300 V while keeping good actuation performance. With operation voltages in the kV-range, standard DEAs are limited in terms of potential applications. Using thinner membranes is one of the few existing methods to achieve lower operation voltages. Typical DEAs have membranes in the 20-100 um range, values below which membrane fabrication becomes challenging and the membr

Methods and materials for liquid encapsulation in thin (19 μm) silicone membranes are presented in this work. A set of 12 liquids including solvents, oils, silicone pre-polymers and one ionic liquid are experimentally tested. We show that all selected liquids are chemically inert to silicone and that vapor pressure is the key parameter for stable encapsulation. It is demonstrated that encapsulated volume of silicone pre-polymers and ionic liquids can stay stable for more than 1 month. The actuation of diele

We demonstrate the fabrication of fully printed thin dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), reducing the operation voltage below 300V while keeping good actuation strain. DEAs are soft actuators capable of strains greater than 100% and response times below ...

This study contrasts the implantation of 25 μm thick Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes with titanium and gold ions at 10 keV and 35 keV for doses from 1x10^15 at/cm2 to 2.5x10^16 at/cm2 implanted with two different techniques: Filtered Cathodic Vacuum Arc (FCVA) and Low Energy Broad Ion Beam (LEI). The influence of the ion energy, ion type, and implantation tool on the Young’s modulus (E), resistivity and structural properties (nanocluster size and location, surface roughness) of PDMS membranes is repor

One of the goals of microfluidics is to bring a whole laboratory processing chain on a few square centimeters, Lab-On-Chips (LOC). But current LOCs require many heavy and power-consuming off-chip controls like pneumatics, pumps and valves, which keep the small chip bound to the lab. Miniaturized Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEA) are excellent candidates to make LOC truly portable, since they combine electrical actuation, large stroke volumes and high output forces. We report on the use of zipping actuati

We report measurements of displacement and mechanical work for miniaturized Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) whose compliant electrodes were fabricated using metal ion implantation. 20 to 30 μm thick Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes were bonded to silicon chips with through holes of diameter 2 to 3 mm and were implanted on both sides with gold ions. Out-of-plane deflection recorded as a function of voltage and applied mechanical distributed load was in very good agreement with an analytical model.

We present a simple open-loop method to suppress the viscoelastic drift of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs). Viscoelastic creep is one of the drawbacks of DEAs, especially when made with acrylic elastomer membranes (VHB). This leads to a time-dependen ...

Development of dielectric elastomer actuators has been mainly targeted towards achieving giant static strain with little attention paid to their response speed, which can, depending on materials used, be as long as tens of seconds. However, most of the practical applications require actuators capable of changing shape quickly, therefore a careful choice of materials and technologies for the dielectric and electrodes must be made. Test oscillating actuators, made with a range of silicone membranes with diffe

Biological cells regulate their biochemical behavior in response to mechanical stress present in their organism. Most of the available cell cultures designed to study the effect of mechanical stimuli on cells are cm2 area, far too large to monitor single cell response or have a very low throughput. We have developed two sets of high throughput single cell stretcher devices based on dielectric elastomer microactuators to stretch groups of individual cells with various strain levels in a single experiment. Th

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are an attractive form of electromechanical transducer, possessing high energy densities, an efficient design, mechanical flexibility, high speed, and noiseless operation. They have been incorporated into a variety of ...

We report on the first successfully microfabricated and tested ion-implanted dielectric electroactive polymer (EAP or DEAP) actuators. Dieletric EAP (DEAP) actuators combine exceptionally high energy-density with large amplitude displacements [1,2]. Scaling DEAPs down to the milimeter and micron scale requires patterning compliant electrodes on such a scale on the surfaces of the polymer. We used ion implantation to make the surfaces of the polymer locally conducting. Implanting the compliant electrodes sol

We present high-cycle aging tests of Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) based on silicone elastomers, reporting on the time-evolution of actuation strain and of electrode resistance over millions of cycles. We compare several types of carbon-based elect ...

We present a deformable cell culture system based on dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA). Understanding how the mechanical environment can affect cells functions could lead to significant advances in diseases diagnosis and drug development. Most available technologies offer low screening throughput, an important limitation considering the statistical nature of cellular studies. We previously reported an array of micro-DEAs for cell stretching application. Our DEA-based solution has the potential to replace

We report on the use of zipping actuation applied to dielectric elastomer actuators to microfabricate mm-sized pumps. The zipping actuators presented here use electrostatic attraction to deform an elastomeric membrane by pulling it into contact with a rigid counter electrode. We present several actuation schemes using either conventional DEA actuation, zipping, or a combination of both in order to realize microfluidic devices. A zipping design in which the electric field is applied across the elastomer memb

We report on the use of capacitive self-sensing to operate a DEA-based tunable grating in closed-loop mode. Due to their large strain capabilities, DEAs are key candidates for tunable optics applications. However, the viscoelasticity of elastomers is detrimental for applications that require long-term stability, such as tunable gratings and lenses. We show that capacitive sensing of the electrode strain can be used to suppress the strain drift and increase the response speed of silicone-based actuators. On

We report on the first ion-implanted dielectric electroactive polymer actuator that was successfully microfabricated and tested. Ion implantation is used to make the surface of the polymer locally conducting. Implanting the compliant electrodes solves the ...

Cellular biology is a promising field of application for dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) given that large strains are needed but only low forces are required. The development of devices compatible with standard cell culture protocols and equipment is however challenging. We recently demonstrated that DEAs can be interfaced with living cells and used to control their mechanical environment. Here we detail the fabrication process of our DEA-based cell stretcher and present a holder which was designed to

Non-viscoelastic castable elastomers are replacing the polyacrylate VHB films in the new generations of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) to achieve fast and reliable actuation. We introduce the optimum prestretch conditions to enhance the electromecha ...

This communication presents the modeling and the first demonstration of very large deformation balloon actuators based on pyrotechnics on chip. The gas and pressure generated by the combustion of a solid propellant stored in a micromachined cavity lead to the large deformation of the elastic membrane closing the cavity, forming a balloon with a radius of few millimeters. By combining the experimental data obtained on the mechanical properties of the elastic membrane and volume of gas generated per unit of m

In this work, a transparent dielectric elastomer actuator is integrated into a tunable transmission grating. A 13 micron-thick silicone membrane has been sandwiched between two 750 nanometer-thick transparent ionogel electrodes to fabricate a transparent dielectric elastomer actuator. By structuring the top transparent ionogel electrode into a sinusoid grating profile, with 2 µm period, the transparent dielectric elastomer actuator is transformed into a tunable transmission grating. The structured stretchab
