The presence of cortical lesions in multiple sclerosis patients has emerged as an important biomarker of the disease. They appear in the earliest stages of the illness and have been shown to correlate with the severity of clinical symptoms. However, cortic ...

Despite the plethora of AI-based algorithms developed for anomaly detection in radiology, subsequent integration into clinical setting is rarely evaluated. In this work, we assess the applicability and utility of an AI-based model for brain aneurysm detect ...

Validation of image registration algorithms is a difficult task and open-ended problem, usually application-dependent. In this paper we focus on deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting for the treatment of movement disorders like Parkinson's disease and ess ...

Segmentation of fetal brain tissue from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a crucial role in the study of in utero neurodevelopment. However, automated tools face substantial domain shift challenges as they must be robust to highly heterogeneous clinical data, often limited in number and lacking annotations. Indeed, high variability of the fetal brain morphology, MRI acquisition parameters, and super-resolution reconstruction (SR) algorithms adversely affect the model’s performance when evaluated out-of

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is associated with an increased susceptibility to develop schizophrenia. Despite a large body of literature documenting abnormal brain structure in 22q11DS, cerebral changes associated with brain maturation in 22q11DS remained largely unexplored. To map cortical maturation from childhood to adulthood in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, we used cerebral MRI from 59 patients with 22q11DS, aged 6 to 40, and 80 typically developing controls; three year follow-up assessments were al

In recent years, multi-atlas fusion methods have gained significant attention in medical image segmentation. In this paper, we propose a general Markov Random Field (MRF) based framework that can perform edge-preserving smoothing of the labels at the time ...

Background: Fetal brain MRI is increasingly used to complement ultrasound imaging. Images are processed using complex super-resolution reconstruction pipelines, which may bias biometric and volumetric measurements. Objective: To assess the consistency of 2 ...

To date, several methods have been developed to explain deep learning algorithms for classification tasks. Recently, an adaptation of two of such methods has been proposed to generate instance-level explainable maps in a semantic segmentation scenario, suc ...

Introduction:Changes in cortical and white matter lesion (CL, WML) load are pivotal metrics to diagnose and monitor multiple sclerosis patients. Yet, the relationship between (i) changes in CL/WML load and disease progression and between (ii) changes in CL ...

Brain deformations induced by space-occupying lesions may result in unpredictable position and shape of functionally important brain structures. The aim of this study is to propose a method for segmentation of brain structures by deformation of a segmented ...

In this paper, we propose a new paradigm to carry out the registration task with a dense deformation field derived from the optical flow model and the active contour method. The proposed framework merges different tasks such as segmentation, regularization, incorporation of prior knowledge and registration into a single framework. The active contour model is at the core of our framework even if it is used in a different way than the standard approaches. Indeed, active contours are a well-known technique for

Normal course of cortical maturation has been evidenced for many years through gray matter volume measurements and abnormal gray matter volumes have frequently been reported as a part of a pathological brain development in neurogenetic or psychiatric disorders. The pathogenic processes underlying abnormal gray matter volume are not yet well understood, as either altered cortical thickness or a defect in cortical expansion may decrease cortical volume. Resolving this issue may provide clues for localizing th

The human brain is a complex system that can be efficiently represented as a network of structural connectivity. Many imaging studies would benefit from such network information, which is not always available. In this work, we present a whole-brain multi-s ...

Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (dMRI) is a powerful non-invasive method for studying white matter tracts of the brain. However, accurate microstructure estimation with fiber orientation distribution (FOD) using existing computational methods requires ...

This paper presents a new non parametric atlas registration framework, derived from the optical flow model and the active contour theory, applied to automatic subthalamic nucleus (STN) targeting in deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. In a previous work, ...

Diffusion MRI (dMRI) of the developing brain can provide valuable insights into the white matter development. However, slice thickness in fetal dMRI is typically high (i.e., 3-5 mm) to freeze the in-plane motion, which reduces the sensitivity of the dMRI s ...

This paper presents the segmentation of bilateral parotid glands in the Head and Neck (H&N) CT images using an active contour based atlas registration. We compare segmentation results from three atlas selection strategies: (i) selection of “single-most-sim ...

We propose a deep study on tissue modelization and classification Techniques on T1-weighted MR images. Three approaches have been taken into account to perform this validation study. Two of them are based on Finite Gaussian Mixture (FGM) model. The first one consists only in pure gaussian distributions (FGM-EM). The second one uses a different model for partial volume (PV) (FGM-GA). The third one is based on a Hidden Markov Random Field (HMRF) model. All methods have been tested on a Digital Brain Phantom i

Purpose The thalamus is an important brain structure and neurosurgical target, but its constituting nuclei are challenging to image non-invasively. Recently, susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) at ultra-high field has shown promising capabilities for tha ...

For radiotherapy treatment planning of retinoblastoma in childhood, Computed Tomography (CT) represents the standard method for tumor volume delineation, despite some inherent limitations. CT scan is very useful in providing information on physical density ...
