The photochemistry of metal-organic compounds in solution is determined by both intra- and inter-molecular relaxation processes after photoexcitation. Understanding its prime mechanisms is crucial to optimise the reactive paths and control their outcome. H ...

CONSPECTUS: The properties of transition metal complexes are interesting not only for their potential applications in solar energy conversion, OLEDs, molecular electronics, biology, photochemistry, etc. but also for their fascinating photophysical properti ...

The effect of dimensionality on materials properties has become strikingly evident with the recent discovery of graphene. Charge ordering phenomena can be induced in one dimension by periodic distortions of a material's crystal structure, termed Peierls or ...

An approximate analytical approach is developed for the calculation of the surface plasmon frequency of a system of interacting nanospheres for arbitrary values of interparticle distances. In addition to having a simple and physically clear form, the final ...

The photoelectron spectra of both liquid and gas phase aromatic molecules are reported. The spectra were obtained using a 34.1 eV source produced by high harmonic generation and analysed with the help of high-level ab initio simulations using the reflectio ...

Ultrafast electronic-vibrational relaxation upon excitation of the singlet charge-transfer b1A' state of [Re(L)(CO)3(bpy)]n (L = Cl, Br, I, n = 0; L = 4-Et-pyridine, n = 1+) in acetonitrile was investigated using the femtosecond fluorescence up-conversion ...

The transfer of charge at the molecular level plays a fundamental role in many areas of chemistry, physics, biology and materials science. Today, more than 60 years after the seminal work of R. A. Marcus, charge transfer is still a very active field of res ...

Charge-transfer-to-solvent states in aqueous halides are ideal systems for studying the electron-transfer dynamics to the solvent involving a complex interplay between electronic excitation and solvent polarization. Despite extensive experimental investiga ...

The structure-function relationship is at the heart of biology, and major protein deformations are correlated to specific functions. For ferrous heme proteins, doming is associated with the respiratory function in hemoglobin and myoglobins. Cytochrome c (C ...

Two-dimensional Fourier transform spectroscopy is a promising technique to study ultrafast molecular dynamics. Similar to transient absorption spectroscopy, a more complete picture of the dynamics requires broadband laser pulses to observe transient change ...

A complete characterization, based on fs pump-probe spectroscopy and mol. dynamics simulations, is presented of the ultrafast dynamics of electronic bubble formation in solid para-H2 upon impulsive excitation of impurity-doped sites, which correlate with t ...

We present an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) transient grating (TG) experiment of the spinel Co3O4 compound using tuneable incident energies across the Co M-2,M-3-edge and a 395 nm probe pulse, detecting both the first and the second diffraction orders (SDOs). ...

We report on microscopic observation of solvation by argon atoms of excited states of an ethylenic-like mol., TDMAE (tetrakis dimethylaminoethylene). Two exptl. methods were used: gas phase dynamics for the observation of the evolution through excited stat ...

Femtosecond fluorescence up-conversion, UV-Vis and IR transient absorption spectroscopy are used to study the photo-isomerization dynamics of a new type of zwitterionic photoswitch based on a N-alkylated indanylidene pyrroline Schiff base framework (ZW-NAI ...

We report on the C K-edge x-ray absorption spectra and the resonant (RXES) and non-resonant (NXES) x-ray emission spectra of ethylene, allene and butadiene in the gas phase. The RXES and NXES show clear differences for the different molecules. Overall both ...

Intermolecular electron-transfer reactions have a crucial role in biology, solution chemistry and electrochemistry. The first step of such reactions is the expulsion of the electron to the solvent, whose mechanism is determined by the structure and dynamic ...

The authors report a femtosecond pump-probe study of photochem. of concd. aq. solns. of [Ru(bpy)3]2+, as a function of pump power (up to 2 TW/cm2) at 400 nm excitation. The transient absorption spectra in the 345-660 nm range up to 1 ns time delay enable t ...

Recent progress in ultrafast x-ray sources helped establish x-rays as an important tool for probing lattice and magnetic dynamics initiated by femtosecond optical pulses. Here, we explore the potential of ultrashort hard x-ray pulses for driving magnetic dynamics. We use a transient grating technique in which a spatially periodic x-ray excitation pattern gives rise to material excitations at a well-defined wave vector, whose dynamics are monitored via diffraction of an optical probe pulse. The excitation of

We report on ultrafast transient absorption (TA) studies of surface plasmon-excited similar to 25 nm-diameter Au nanoparticles in solution, monitoring the response of the surface plasmon resonance in the visible region (1.7-3.0 eV) and that of the inter- a ...

Jahn–Teller polarons are quasiparticles that stem from symmetry breaking and strong local electron–phonon coupling. They originate from an excess charge carrier being dressed by a local lattice distortion, caused by the Jahn–Teller effect, and they critically impact electrical, structural, and magnetic properties in transition metal oxides. The observation of the microscopic steps involved in their formation is essential for enabling control over material properties through the targeted activation of local,
