Trivalent lanthanide ions display fascinating optical properties. The discovery of the corresponding elements and their fist industrial uses were intimately linked to their optical properties. This relationship has been kept alive until today when many hig ...

Metal-halide perovskites-based optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells and light-emitting diodes (LEDs), are transitioning from promising performers to direct competitors to well-established technologies due to the advantage of cost-effectiveness. Pero ...

Tetrapyrrole derivatives such as porphyrins, phthalocyanines, naphthalocyanines, and porpholactones, are highly stable macrocyclic compounds that play important roles in many phenomena linked to the development of life. Their complexes with lanthanides are ...

Phosphinoylated calixarenes feature high coordination ability toward f elements and a great potentiality toward actinide/rare earth separation. Here, we report three characteristic properties of a tetra-phosphinoylated p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene, B(4)bL(4) ...

A versatile and robust method for the determination of DNA and PCR products (

A series of new mixed-ligand lanthanide complexes [Ln(hfa)3(4-cpyNO)]2 (Ln = SmIII-HoIII and TmIII; hfa- = hexafluoroacetylacetonate; 4-cpyNO = 4-cyanopyridine N-oxide) have been synthesised by treating the corresponding lanthanide hexafluoroacetylacetonat ...

An improved synthesis of 2-(2′-benzothiazole)- and 2-(2′-benzoxazole)-8-hydroxyquinoline ligands that combine a tridentate N,N,O-chelating unit for metal binding and extended chromophore for light harvesting is developed. The 2-(2′-benzoxazole)-8-hydroxyqu ...

The lanthanide binuclear helicate [Eu2(LC2(CO2H))3] is coupled to avidin to yield a luminescent bioconjugate EuB1 (Q ¼ 9.3%, s(5D0) ¼ 2.17 ms). MALDI/TOF mass spectrometry confirms the covalent binding of the Eu chelate and UV-visible spectroscopy allows o ...

Coordination chemistry has been widely studied in lanthanide complexes, where organic ligands are used to chelate individual lanthanide ions, and the complexes are broadly used in analytical, biological, and clinical applications. Significant progress has ...

Homonuclear helicates with rare-earth-metal(III) ions or heteronuclear derivatives with rare-earth-metal and aluminium or zinc centres are obtained in alkali-metal-templated selfassembly processes from isobutenylidene- bridged homoditopic bis(2-carb-Gamido ...

A series of homoditopic ligands H2LCX (X=4–6) has been designed to self-assemble with lanthanide ions (LnIII), resulting in neutral bimetallic helicates of overall composition [Ln2ACHTUNGTRENUNG(LCX)3] with the aim of testing the influence of substituents ...

Two Bodipy-based chromophores have been synthesized, which bear two methoxyphenyl substituents in the 1,7 positions and either hydrogen (L1) or bromine (L2) atoms in the 2,6 positions, with the aim of testing their ability to sensitize the luminescence of ...

A facile synthesis of benzothiazole- and benzoxazole-substituted pyridine-2-carboxylic acids has been developed. These ligands form mononuclear nine-coordinate complexes [Ln(κ3-ligand)2(κ1-ligand)(H2O)2] with light and heavy trivalent lanthanides, as estab ...

Presently, phosphors and luminescent materials for lighting, telecommunications, displays, security inks and marking, as well as for probes in biosciences represent one third of the total value of the lanthanides used worldwide. If optical glasses and lase ...

The connection of three tridentate 2,6-bis(1-ethyl-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine binding units to an extended sulfurcontaining tripodal anchor in the ligand L9 yields nine-coordinate podates [Ln(L9)]3+ upon reaction with trivalent lanthanides, Ln(III). Struct ...

Mononuclear trivalent lanthanide complexes with formula [Ln(L)(NO3)3] [in which L=4,4-difluoro-8-(2:2;6:2-terpyridin-4-yl)-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-2,6-diethyl-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (Boditerpy)] are reported for Ln=Yb, Nd, Er, La and Gd. According to th ...

A rational approach to the formation of pure heteropolymetallic lanthanide complexes that uses a two-step assembly strategy and exploits the different size requirements of the two metals included in the final structure is described. The investigation of th ...

The crystal and molecular structure of dinitrato(1,7,10,16‐tetraoxa‐4,13‐diazacyclooctadecane)europium(III) nitrate, ([Eu(NO3)2(C12H26N2O4)]NO3) has been determined from single‐crystal X‐ ray diffraction: a = 12.567(3), b = 11.585(3), c = 16.354(5) Å, β = 112.45(2)°, space group P 21/n , Z = 4. The structure consists of discrete dinitrato complex cations and of nitrate anions. The Eu(III) ion is 10‐coordinate, bonding to the six donor atoms of the macrocycle and to four O‐atoms of the two bidentate nitrates

In recent decades, rare earths have become vital to a wealth of advanced materials and technologies including catalysts, alloys, magnets, optics and lasers, rechargeable hydride batteries, electronics, economical lighting, wind- and solar-energy conversion, bio-analyses and imaging. In this perspective article we give a broad overview of rare earth resources and uses first and then of selected applications in dedicated fields such as telecommunications, lasers, photovoltaics (solar-energy conversion), light

Solar energy represents an abundant (1000 W·m-2) and seemingly cheap source of energy. One way to tap it is to transform light into electricity with photovoltaic devices. Single junction solar cells presently reach 32% conversion yield under 1-sun illumination while multijunction devices irradiated by concentrated light can reach 44%. One major problem encountered when trying to increase the conversion efficiency lies in the spectral mismatch between the absorption spectrum of the semiconductor and the sola
