This article reports the comparison of structure and properties of titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN) films deposited onto Si(100) substrates under normal and oblique angle depositions using pulsed-DC magnetron sputtering. The substrate temperature was set ...

Acquisition of three-dimensional (3D) spectral data is nowadays common using many different microanalytical techniques. In order to proceed to the 3D reconstruction, data processing is necessary not only to deal with noisy acquisitions but also to segment ...

We describe a protocol for fully automated detection and segmentation of asymmetric, presumed excitatory, synapses in serial electron microscopy images of the adult mammalian cerebral cortex, taken with the focused ion beam, scanning electron microscope (F ...

Comprehensive scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) analysis of Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) powder modified by deposited Ag nanoparticles was performed. Nanocomposite powders with Ag content of 1 wt.%, 4 wt.%, 10 wt.% were fabricated in a chemical process f ...

Exploiting additional degrees of freedom in solid-state materials may be the most-promising solution when approaching the quantum limit of Moore's law for the conventional electronic industry. Recently discovered topologically nontrivial spin textures, sky ...

We show a technique that images the intensity distribution and local state of polarization of the optical field of high-quality factor optical modes confined in dielectric planar photonic crystal nanocavities. Based on energy-loss spectroscopy of swift ele ...

Strontium barium niobate thin films have been deposited by pulsed laser deposition on (111)-textured Pt films, p-doped Si(I 00) and Nb doped STO (SrTiO3) single crystals. The deposition parameters were optimized for obtaining phase pure (001)-oriented films from stochiometric targets. The samples were annealed in oxygen to improve top electrode adhesion and reduce oxygen vacancies. The SBN/substrate interfaces were investigated by means of TEM combined with EDAX chemical analysis. Growth on silicon resulted

Quantum dots embedded within nanowires represent one of the most promising technologies for applications in quantum photonics. Whereas the top-down fabrication of such structures remains a technological challenge, their bottom-up fabrication through self-a ...

Skyrmions are chiral magnetic textures with non-trivial topology, and due to their unique properties they are widely considered as promising information carriers in novel magnetic storage applications. While electric field writing/erasing and manipulation ...

Evidence of composition fluctuations around threading dislocations at scales ranging from atomic distances to tens of nanometers is provided by z-contrast imaging, strain measurement, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy in AlxIn1-x N/GaN heterostructu ...

The favorable growth kinetics of twinned dendrites can be explained by their complex morphology, multiple side branching mechanisms, growth undercooling and tip morphology. Three models were proposed for the twinned dendrite tip shape: (i) a grooved tip sa ...

Theory predicts that periodic photonic nanostructures should outperform their random counterparts in trapping light in solar cells. However, the current certified world-record conversion efficiency for amorphous silicon thin-film solar cells, which strongl ...

The performance of solid oxide cells is known to be dependent upon the density of three phase boundaries (TPB), but the potential for improving their effective electrocatalytic activity by morphological adjustments is imprecisely known. A spilling algorith ...

(Mg,Fe)O ferropericlase-magnesiow & uuml;stite has been proposed to host the majority of Earth's sodium, but the mechanism and capacity for incorporating the alkali cation remain unclear. In this work, experiments in the laser-heated diamond anvil cell and ...

We carried out a series of silicate fractional crystallization experiments at lower mantle pressures using the laser-heated diamond anvil cell. Phase relations and the compositional evolution of the cotectic melt and equilibrium solids along the liquid lin ...

This work considers the resulting material structural effects of laser-processing chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond. The utilized 532 nm wavelength laser had a pulse duration of 40 ns together with a spot diameter of ca. 40 mu m. The effect of cutting ...

Relaxor Pb(Sc-12/Ta-1/2)O-3 (PST) thin films have been prepared using mixed alkoxide and acetate precursors on TiO2/Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates. Relaxor behavior as evidenced by frequency dispersion of the permittivity as a function of temperature was observed, as well as a thickness dependence of the dielectric constant. The highest values of dielectric constant were observed for the thicker 650 nm samples displaying a room temperature dielectric constant near 2000, with a loss tangent of 0.3% at 1 kHz. The

This protocol describes how in vivo-imaged dendrites and axons in adult mouse brains can subsequently be prepared and imaged with focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIBSESEM). The procedure starts after in vivo imaging with chemical fixation, f ...

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is an invaluable tool for biologists and neuroscientists to study brain structure at the intra- cellular level. While able to image tissue samples with up to 5nm isotropic resolution, image acquisition is prohibitively sl ...

PbTiO3 thin films were prepared from alkoxide solution precursors and crystallized onto Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates. Microscopy observations revealed that the complexity of the domain walls structure decreased with the grain size. Dielectric, electrostrictive, and piezoelectric properties of the films were characterized in details. A shift of the temperature of the dielectric permittivity maximum due to stresses in the plane of films has been observed. Electrostrictive M and Q coefficients were estimated by
