Existing activity-based modeling predominantly focus on out-of-home activities in order to understand transport demand. In this research, we extend the state of practice in activity-based modelling by determining both in- and out-of-home activities in a single scheduling framework. This approach has two main benefits and applications: Firstly, it can capture the trade-offs between in-home and out-of-home activities. Secondly, in-home time-use patterns can be used to model high resolution energy demand, whic

This paper discusses some methodological approaches to model competition in a demand-based optimization framework which is particularly suitable for oligopolistic markets. Such approaches allow us to analyze oligopolies from three perspectives: at a customer level, by using discrete choice models to take into account preference heterogeneity and to model individual decisions; at an operator level, by solving a mixed integer linear program that maximizes any relevant objective function; and at a market level

The problem of generating a virtual view of a scene, i.e. a view from a point where there is not a physical camera to capture the scene, has received recently a lot of attention from the computer vision community. This is probably due to the increase of the computational power of computers, which allows to deal with multiple view systems (systems composed of multiple cameras) efficiently. In this document, an introduction to virtual view generation techniques is presented. In a first part, geometric constra

This research focuses on the formulation of a dynamic discrete-continuous choice model to explain and predict individuals' choices regarding car ownership, choice of fuel type and choice of annual driving distance. Its main contribution is to integrate dynamic choice modeling for multiple-car households and discrete-continuous choice modeling. This paper presents the formulation of the model and its estimation on synthetic data.

Electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft-based urban air mobility (UAM) service in conjunction with personal flying cars are anticipated to offer mobility benefits in terms of reduced travel time, alleviate demand from overburdened ground transporta ...

The purpose of this research was to explore how the values of travel time (VTT) and preferences for different modes vary within individuals compared with the variation between observed trips. With 6-week revealed preference panel data and stated preference ...

Location-aware data collection technologies provide new insights about location choices. Only a few dynamic models of location choice exist in scientific literature. To our knowledge, none of them correct for serial correlation. In this paper, we model cho ...

We integrate latent attitudes of individuals into a mode choice model through latent variable and latent class models with the help of psychometric indicators that enable us to measure these attitudes. The aim of the inclusion of attitudes is to better und ...

Long-term planning for energy systems is often based on deterministic economic optimization and forecasts of fuel prices. When fuel price evolution is underestimated, the consequence is a low penetration of renewables and more efficient technologies in fav ...

We propose new trust-region based optimization algorithms for solving unconstrained nonlinear problems whose second derivatives matrix is singular at a local solution. We give a theoretical characterization of the singularity in this context and we propose an iterative procedure which allows to identify a singularity in the objective function during the course of the optimization algorithm, and artificially adds curvature to the objective function. Numerical tests are performed on a set of unconstrained non

Since the 70s, there has been a growing interest in activity-based modelling. This approach models the need to travel as a result of performing daily activities (Bowman and Ben-Akiva, 2001). Nevertheless, the activities need to be scheduled which involves ...

In this paper, we consider the recovery of an airline schedule after an unforeseen event called disruption, making the planned schedule infeasible. We present a modeling framework that allows the consideration of operational constraints within a Column Generation (CG) scheme. We introduce the general concept of recovery network, generated for each individual unit of the problem, and show how unitspecific constraints are modeled using resources. We fully illustrate the concept by solving the Aircraft Recover

An innovative modular aircraft, called Clip-Air, is being designed at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL). The novelty of Clip-Air from a transportation system viewpoint is its flexibility due to the decoupling of load and carrying units. In this paper, we analyze the impacts of the flexibility of Clip-Air from the airlines perspective. To quantify the potential advantages of this new system, an integrated schedule design and fleet assignment model is developed for both standard airline fleets a

This paper considers discrete choice, with choice probabilities coming from maximization of preferences from a random utility field perturbed by additive location shifters (ARUM). Any ARUM can be characterized by a choice-probability generating function (C ...

In this research we study the berth allocation problem (BAP) in real time as disruptions occur. In practice, the actual arrival times and handling times of the vessels deviate from their expected or estimated values, which can disrupt the original berthing ...

In this paper, we introduce the incremental temporally weighted principal component analysis (ITWPCA) algorithm, based on singular value decomposition update, and the incremental temporally weighted visual tracking with spatial penalty (ITWVTSP) algorithm ...

Residential building energy usage can be considered as being derived from the activity patterns of individuals inside the home. As such an activity-based energy demand model that can create in-home energy usage profiles from household activity patterns is the key to a better building energy demand analysis. In order to find the relation between building energy usage and activity profiles, energy usage data with an overlapping activity diary survey is needed. However, there is no detailed data containing inf

Generalised extreme value models provide an interesting theoretical framework to develop closed-form random utility models. Unfortunately, few instances of this family are to be found as operational models in practice. The form of the model, based on a gen ...
