Forecasts predict a strong increase of the demand of public transport facilities in the next decades, close to doubling the number of users in the "Arc lémanique" area. This increase in demand can lead to congestion and poor level-of-service inside transportation hubs. The aim of this paper is to develop control strategies which aim at guiding pedestrians in hubs and improving the flow dynamics. The objective is to guarantee adequate level-of-service throughout the infrastructure. This is achieved by influe

The usage of smartphones has rapidly increased during the last years. In addition to communication capabilities, they are also equipped with several sensors, and are usually carried by people throughout the day. The data collected by the means of modern smartphones (e.g. location based, GSM, and other contextual data) are thus valuable source of information for transportation analysis. In this paper we focus on smartphone data used for transportation mode detection. This is important for many applications i

In this paper we consider the recovery of an airline schedule after an unforeseen event, commonly called disruption, that makes the planned schedule unfeasible. In particular we consider the aircraft recovery problem for a quasi-homogeneous fleet of aircrafts, made of regular and reserve planes, where the maintenance constraints are explicitly taken into account and different maintenance constraints can be imposed. We propose a multicommodity network flow model, where each commodity represents a plane, a dy

Different approaches to the moving object detection in multi-object tracking systems use dynamic-based models. In this paper we propose the use of a discrete choice model (DCM) of pedestrian behavior and its application to the problem of the target detection in the particular case of pedestrian tracking. We analyze real scenarios assuming to have a calibrated monocular camera, allowing a unique correspondence between the image plan and the top view reconstruction of the scene. In our approach we first initi

Seaport container terminals are source of many interesting large-scale optimization problems, that arise in the management of operations at several decision levels. In this work we study exact methods to solve the Tactical Berth Allocation Problem with Quay Crane Assignment, an integrated decision problem that occurs in the management of the quayside resources. We reformulate the problem via Dantzig-Wolfe and present an exact solution approach based on column generation that exploits the problem's structure

Within the United States, there have been evolving perceptions on the benefits and disadvantages of using peaked flight schedules. Arguments in favor of using peaked schedules have centered on a traditional assumption that consumers prefer itineraries with ...

This study examines the influence of agglomeration and deglomeration forces on residence-workplace location choices across skill groups. Contrary to the standard approach in economic geography, the focus on skills rather than people is particularly relevant in knowledge-based economies, where core-periphery dynamics are driven by skill disparities. Our case study examines the mobility of French-born workers within the Greater Region surrounding Luxembourg. Between 2005 and 2019, an estimated 38,445 addition

In this work, we study the single machine scheduling problem with uncertain release times and processing times of jobs. We adopt a robust scheduling approach, in which the measure of robustness to be minimized for a given sequence of jobs is the worst-case objective function value of the set of all possible realizations of release and processing times. The objective function value is the total flow time of all jobs. We discuss some important properties of robust schedules for zero and non-zero release times

The principal concept of navigation is to start from a known (initial) position and to ensure a continued and reliable localisation of the user during his/her movement. The initial position of the trajectory is usually obtained via GPS or defined by the us ...

In the recent years, researchers have investigated several methods of facial expression analysis. Their interest has been to apply their algorithms to sets of images labelled by a restrained number of experts. In order to deal with the generalizability of the proposed methods, databases of numerous facial expressions images have been collected. Less attention has been given to the experts. In this paper we present a web-based survey aiming at collecting the judgment on different facial expressions of a hete

Discrete choice models are defined conditional to the knowledge of the actual choice set by the analyst. The common practice for many years is to assume that individual-based choice sets can be deterministically generated based on the choice context and the characteristics of the decision maker. There are many situations where this assumption is not valid or not applicable, and probabilistic choice set formation procedures must be considered. The Constrained Multinomial Logit model (CMNL) has recently been

We present a new approach for modeling and analyzing route choice behavior. It is motivated by the need to reduce the complexity of the state-of-the-art choice models. It is inspired by the simplifications done by the travelers, using representations of th ...

We present an operational framework for the calibration of demand models for dynamic traffic simulations. Our focus is on disaggregate simulators that represent every traveler individually. We calibrate, at a likewise individual level, arbitrary choice dimensions within a Bayesian framework, where the analyst's prior knowledge is represented by the dynamic traffic simulator itself and the measurements are comprised of time-dependent traffic counts. The approach is equally applicable to an equilibrium-based

A macroscopic loading model for multi-directional, time-varying and congested pedestrian flows is proposed. Walkable space is represented by a network of streams that are each associated with an area in which they interact. To describe this interaction, a ...

While moving from diary survey to location-aware technologies, recent data collection techniques provide new insights about location choices. Only few dynamic models of location choice exist in the literature, and none of them to our knowledge correct for serial correlation. In this paper, we apply a method proposed by Wooldridge (2005) to deal with the initial values problem on the choice of catering locations on a campus using WiFi traces. Cross-validation, price elasticity and simulation of a scenario pr

Modern demand models rely on discrete choice models. These models are able to predict the choice behavior of individuals in a detailed way, accounting not only for the price and quality of the goods, but also for the characteristics of the customers. Consequently, they allow to capture the heterogeneity of the behavioral patterns in the population, that generate the demand. Unfortunately, these models are highly non linear and non convex in the variables of interest, and are therefore difficult to include i

Pedestrian flows occurring in train stations are multi-directional and highly non-stationary. In this work, we develop a cell-based pedestrian flow model capable of describing flow patterns arising when a multitude of trains arrive and depart in close succession. We assume that pedestrian demand, i.e., OD flows and corresponding route fractions, are known a priori. Based on first-order pedestrian flow theory and a cell-transmission model, propagation of individual groups of pedestrians is described dependin

We present an operational framework for the calibration of demand models for dynamic traffic simulations, where calibration refers to the estimation of a structurally predefined model's parameters from real data. Our focus is on disaggregate simulators tha ...

In recent years, many works on geometric image representation have appeared in the literature. Geometric video representation has not received such an important attention so far, and only some initial works in the area have been presented. Works on geometr ...
