We report on the magnetic actuation of superparamagnetic particles in a microfluidic channel. The formation of a highly confined and dynamic plug of particles extending over the cross section of the microchannel is enabled by superposing a static and a tim ...

Optical retrieval of the structure of transparent objects at the nanoscale requires adapted techniques capable of probing their interaction with light. Here, we considered a method based on calibration of the defocusing with partially coherent illumination ...

The recent development of light-based 3D printing technologies has marked a turning point in additive manufacturing. Through photopolymerization, liquid resins can be solidified into complex objects. Usually, the polymerization is triggered by exciting a p ...

We have realized a flexible force sensor, composed of four redundant capacitors, the operation of which is based on the measurement of a load-induced capacitance change. We use polyimide both as flexible substrate and as elastic dielectric between two leve ...

We present an original concept of manipulation of magnetic microbeads in a microchannel. It is based on the dynamic motion of a self-assembled structure of ferrimagnetic beads that are retained within a microfluidic flow using a local alternating magnetic field. The latter induces a rotational motion of the magnetic particles, thereby strongly enhancing the fluid perfusion through the magnetic structure that behaves as a dynamic random porous medium. The result is a very strong particle-liquid interaction t

This paper presents the transport analysis of high density baseline discharges in the 2016 experimental campaign of the Joint European Torus with the ITER-Like Wall (JET-ILW), where a significant increase in the deuterium-deuterium (D-D) fusion neutron rat ...

We present a straightforward method for measuring in-plane linear displacements of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) with a subnanometer resolution. The technique is based on Fourier transform analysis of a video recorded with a Charge-Coupled Device ( ...

A pedestal prediction model Europed is built on the existing EPED1 model by coupling it with core transport simulation using a Bohm-gyroBohm transport model to self-consistently predict JET-ILW power scan for hybrid plasmas that display weaker power degrad ...

The invention relates to a device for measuring the quality and/or degradation of a fluid, especially an oil, comprising a sensor consisting of at least one pair of electrodes which are distanced from each other. Said sensor is immersed in the fluid which ...

Pressure pulse injection is proposed as an alternative technique to electrokinetic injection for use in continuous sample flow electrophoresis microchips. During chip operation, sample and buffer solutions are electrokinetically driven near to the entrance ...

An apparatus for retaining magnetic particles in self-assembled magnetic particle structures in a liquid flow, comprises a micro-channel (5) and magnets (1,2) for generating a substantially static magnetic field across the micro-channel (5) such that magne ...

We established the dual role played by oleylamine (OAm) during the synthesis of CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) by the hot injection method. Earlier reports suggest its role either as nucleating or as passivating agent in controlling the growth of CdSe NCs. Remark ...

The EUROfusion Work Package JET3 programme, established to enable the technological exploitation of the JET experiments over the next years, includes, within the NEXP subproject, a novel Shutdown Dose Rate (SDR) experiment. Considering its ITER-relevance, ...

Operation of the JET tokamak with beryllium and tungsten ITER-like wall provides unique opportunity for detailed studies on dust generation: quantity, morphology, location, etc. The programme carried out in response to ITER needs for safety assessment comp ...

We have fabricated and characterized a reciprocating poly(methylmetacrylate) (PMMA) ball-valve micropump actuated with a miniaturized cylindrical electromagnetic circuit. By finite element calculations, we have optimized the structure of the electromagnet ...

In the preparation for the Deuterium-Tritium campaign, JET will operate with a tritium plasma. The T + T reaction consists of two notable channels: (1) T + T -> He-4 + 2n, (2) T + T -> He-5 + n -> He-4 + 2n. The reaction channel (1) is the reaction with th ...

The Caenorhabditis elegans embryo is a widely used model for the functional analysis of dynamic cellular processes, such as chromosome segregation, cytokinesis or lineage analysis. However, the conventional embryo preparation method that relies on manually ...

A theoretical model for isotopologues of beryllium monohydride, BeH, BeD and BeT, A (2)Pi to X (2)Sigma(+) visible and X (2)Sigma(+) to X (2)Sigma(+) infrared rovibronic spectra is presented. The MARVEL procedure is used to compute empirical rovibronic ene ...

The nematode Caernohabditis elegans is one of the most employed small model organisms in biology. Studies on transgenic animals often require the accurate observation of highly localized fluorescent signals inside the worms at high magnification, hence demanding the full immobilization of the animals. Moreover, in order to observe the dynamics of biological processes over the lifespan of a worm, the same worm has to be immobilized repeatedly, in a reversible manner and under normal physiological conditions.

We have patterned multilayers of amorphous magnetic foils of Metglas/sup /spl reg// 2714a (cobalt-based) and Cu foil into microstructures of different sizes. We have studied the GM effect in these structures, and we have characterized the behavior of the relative permeability as a function of frequency and magnetic field. We obtain GMI ratios [Z/sub max/-Z(B/sub sat/)]/Z(B/sub sat/) up to 800% and GMR ratios [R/sub max/-R(B/sub sat/)]/R(B/sub sat/) up to 2400% at frequencies of 100 kHz-10 MHz, with B/sub sa
