Characterisation of the compaction response of reinforcement fabrics is an important component in the design of composite manufacturing processes. To standardise a best practice method, 22 international organisations participated in an exercise to assess the viability and reproducibility of the method discussed in this work. All participants were supplied with the same multiaxial E-glass fibre non-crimp fabric and instructed to measure the compaction stress as a function of the specimen thickness following

The influence of the initial configuration of glass mat and polypropylene on the deconsolidation during post-processing of the resulting composite is investigated. Deconsolidation experiments of a classic type of glass mat reinforced thermoplastic (GMT) pr ...

The present work aims to enhance the interlaminar toughness of carbon/epoxy composites produced by RTM by modifying the resin with hyperbranched polymers (HBPs). A HBP content of 7.5% in the resin was selected as the best compromise between a slight loss i ...

Ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (MSMA) exhibit magnetic field- and stress-induced twinning when processed into single crystals, but are brittle and difficult to shape. Embedding slender single crystalline MSMA elements into a polymer matrix can thus prov ...

The goal of the research described herein is the fabrication and assessment of electrically conductive partially-cured epoxy coatings which, upon cracking, autonomously restore barrier, mechanical and electrical properties via a microcapsule based healing ...

Permeability measurements of engineering textiles exhibit large variability as no standardization method currently exists; numerical permeability prediction is thus an attractive alternative. It has all advantages of virtual material characterization, incl ...

Segmented meso-voids from a tomography scan of preforms impregnated under capillary dominated conditions, combined to 3D scans of the initial prefrom dry state. ...

This article reviews the current state-of-the-art in the applications of shape memory alloy (SMA) wires into high performance fibre reinforced polymer composite materials (FRPs). SMAs have been investigated to date to address four main areas of properties ...

Liquid composite moulding of Lactam 12 monomer and activating system (APLC12) into satin weave carbon fabrics is investigated, with emphasis on minimising the void content in the final part. The main sources for void formation are identified. The solidific ...

The shear thickening behavior of concentrated suspensions can be exploited to dissipate energy during impact or shear loading. To preserve the consistency of the thickening behavior in practical applications, particle concentration, and dispersion should b ...

We report the first measurements of self-healing polymers with embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. Improvements of healed peak loads by up to a factor of two are observed, approaching the performance of the virgin material. Moreover, the repairs can b ...

Single crystals of ferromagnetic Ni-Mn-Ga shape memory alloys show magnetic-field and stress induced twinning, leading to shape memory. Adaptive composites can thus be produced by embedding single crystalline particles or bamboo-structured Ni-Mn-Ga fibres ...

In non-autoclave processing of sandwich structures, the pressure level inside the honeycomb becomes a critical process parameter, which depends on the permeability to air of the upper skin. In this work, prepreg and adhesive permeabilities were determined ...

The composite part industry is currently dominated by thin-section geometries. However, thick composites gain interest in many applications where monolithic parts are required, such as foils, wind mill root blades, and so forth. Their manufacturing continu ...

The influence of voids on the quasi-static Mode I fracture performance of thick adhesive joints was investigated in this article. Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) joints were manufactured with glass fiber reinforced epoxy adherends and SikaPower®-830 epoxy adhesive in the cm thickness range. The high-viscosity adhesive leads to the inevitable presence of voids, resulting in unstable propagation and promoting crack path deviations. Voids could also decrease the apparent fracture strain energy release rate (SERR)

Wooden racket paddles were modified with rubber and carbon fibre laminates and their differences tested in terms of flexural, damping, and coefficient of restitution properties. Four rackets types were designed: a wood reference, wood with rubber, carbon f ...

In the collaborative effort towards standardisation of out-of-plane permeability measurement, an international benchmarking exercise was carried out whereby 19 participants worldwide were instructed to measure the out-of-plane permeability following a numb ...
