In 2009, l’Hydroptère broke the symbolic barrier of 50 knots and became the world fastest sailing boat over both 500 meters and 1 nautical mile. This major achievement relied on the high skills of the sailing team but also on technical advances of the boat, resulting from long years of studies and development. This achievement is also an open window to a new goal: flying around the world. In the present article, we present this long and incredible story, highlighting the different steps, the technology invo

The effect of sizing on bending rigidity in fibre bundles was investigated. Particular attention was paid to the effect of film formers and anti-static agents on the behaviour of glass fibre bundles under forced packing conditions. The bending rigidity of ...

Solvent healing of thermoset polymer matrices was suggested as an efficient and cost-effective alternative to other encapsulated self-healing systems. However, self-healing efficiency is not guaranteed over time. We report here on the autonomic self-healin ...

From the recent awareness of the booming number of space debris and their derived worldwide re-entry event threat originating from the use of high survivability components, complementary mitigation measures must be taken for future orbital elements. In thi ...

Direct visualization is often sought to elucidate flow patterns and validate models to predict the filling kinetics during processes whereby a liquid resin infiltrates a textile porous preform. Here, X-ray phase contrast interferometry is evaluated to imag ...

The influence of the mould material on the build-up of internal stresses during autoclave cure of carbon fibre composites was investigated using embedded optical fibre Bragg gratings. Unidirectional and cross-ply laminates were cured on four flat moulds: a ...

Epoxy-functionalised hyperbranched polymers (HBP) were combined with aminosilanes to form coatings and their effect on the practical adhesion between galvanised steel and polyethylene was investigated. It was shown that HBPs were initially soluble in silan ...

This article investigates the influence of displacement ratio (R d-ratio) and void content on the fatigue behavior of Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) joints with thick adhesive layer (10 mm). Two R d-ratios and two different void contents were studied. To ach ...

Encapsulation of liquid phases is a crucial step in many self-healing material systems where a healing agent has to be protected during processing and then released during a damage event. In this work, the mechanical properties of polyurethane (PU) reinfor ...

The feasibility of self-healing epoxy matrices using the same chemistry as the matrix material, namely a standard epoxy-amine system, is demonstrated. The two-component self-healing system is encapsulated in core-shell structures using standard in situ cur ...

Ni-Mn-Ga is a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy that exhibits large, magnetic-field- and stress-induced strains via energy dissipating twinning when processed into single crystals. Grain boundaries suppress twinning and render polycrystalline Ni-Mn-Ga britt ...

The feasibility of using a low temperature liquid composite molding technique to produce smart composites with embedded shape memory alloys was investigated. The epoxy system of EPON 828 resin and DETA hardener was evaluated, with embedded NiTiCu shape mem ...

A novel thermoplastic programmable preforming process, TP-P4, has been used to manufacture preforms for non-isothermal compression molding. Commingled glass and polypropylene yarns are deposited by robot onto a vacuum screen, followed by a heat-setting ope ...

The invention relates in particular to a method to process composite structures with tailored stiffness and damping performance incorporating a smart material, namely a shear thickening fluid (STF), preferably at the interface between two elements belongin ...

We report on key challenges of the development of steel cords reinforced thermoplastic elastomer composites with smart functionalities: adhesion tailoring for a durable mechanical load transfer through steel cords or other transmission elements by the use ...

A PCM-based heat exchanger is disclosed, said phase change material (PCM)-based heat exchanger comprising: a) a case having insulated walls comprising an inlet and an outlet; and b) a plurality of modules comprising a support structure containing a phase c ...

The invention relates to a rail pad (10, lOa-v, 10α-η) comprising: a) a pad matrix (1) comprising a first material and b) at least one damping element (2) at least partially encapsulated or embedded in the pad matrix (1), said damping element (2) comprisin ...

Flow properties are investigated for a non-crimp glass fabric with large meso-channels designed for high-permeability, as compared to glass twill woven fabric. Saturated and unsaturated permeability are measured through in-plane, unidirectional, constant-p ...
