The Kariba Dam is a 128 m high arch dam located on the Zambezi River, between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It forms the Kariba lake, with a surface of 5400 km2 and a capacity of 185 km3. In the 20 years following dam construction, heavy rainfalls required frequent ...

The simulation of run-off in Alpine catchment areas is essential for the optimal operation of high head storage hydropower plants (HPPs) under normal flow conditions, but also in case of flood events. A conceptual semidistributed numerical approach is presented, combining hydrologic modelling and operation of hydraulic works. Spatial rainfall and temperature distributions were taken into account for simulating the dominant hydrologic processes, such as glacier melt, snowpack constitution and melt, soil infi

The paper presents the analysis of fluid–structure interaction occurring during hydraulic transients in pipe coils by means of a four-equation model. The purpose is to understand and describe the effect of the coil movement on the transient wave. The four- ...

In the context of a comprehensive research project investigating the hydrodynamic loading on structures with openings, this paper focuses on the wave generation techniques currently used and the test results associated with it, proposing a particular tsuna ...

The dynamic response of a drainage system of a concrete lined plunge pool due to loading by spillway water jet impact is investigated by use of a numerical model. Despite the primary assumption of a complete impervious concrete liner for the plunge pool, it is consid-ered, that due to presence of cracks and joints in the liner, dynamic pressure of the water jet is propagated within the drainage system which, in turn, may result to further pressure amplification in the drainage pipes. A finite element formul

Shallow reservoirs are threatened by fast filling up with sediments, even if the entering sediments are only suspended loads. The sedimentation process is strongly influenced by the geometry of such shallow reservoirs. In the framework of a research projec ...

Steel-lined pressure tunnels and shafts are constructed to convey water from reservoirs to hydroelectric power plants. They are multilayer structures made of a steel liner, a cracked backfill concrete layer, a cracked or loosened near-field rock zone and a ...

When applied to mountain torrents, sediment transport formulae habitually overestimate the bedload by several orders of magnitude, even if they have been developed for steep slopes. The reason is that the influence of macro-roughness elements, such as large immobile boulders, which have an impact on flow conditions, is not taken into account. Larger roughness elements induce an increased form drag, implying a lower shear stress available for sediment entrainment. In order to analyse the impact of such bould

In flood protection engineering, side weirs or overflow dams are used to divert water in a controlled way into flood plains as soon as the discharge capacity of the main-channel is reached. Because of the lateral loss of water, the sediment transport capacity is reduced, resulting in local sediment deposition near the side overflow. Moreover, bed form characteristics such as length, height, steepness, and stoss and lee slope angle are affected by the lateral water withdrawal. Both phenomena are responsible

Uncontrolled overtopping during flood events can endanger embankment dams. Erosion of the downstream slope and scouring of its toe due to the high energy of the overflow can lead to breach formation and complete failure. Solution to overcome these dangerou ...

Global warming is an alarming reality and likely leads to an increase of multiple pressures on socio-economic systems. However, in high-mountain regions it might also become an opportunity to adapt existing hydropower schemes and future projects to this new reality. In the Alps, the melting of glaciers first produces over the near future an increase of the average annual discharge depending on glacier and catchment characteristics, especially during the summer season. Nevertheless after a certain time, sign

The Zambezi River basin is the fourth largest in Africa. Covering an area of about 1 400 000 km2 that is shared among 8 countries, it is the home of over 30 million people. There are ample opportunities for development in the region, including on the hydropower sector, whose estimated potential still to be exploited amounts to over 8 000 MW. In the future, the Zambezi is thought to be particularly vulnerable to climatic changes, with sizable expected impacts on average runoff, and will play a key role in th

Natural hazards such as tsunamis, impulse waves and dam-break waves are rare, but extremely destructive. In recent times, more importance was given to structures that could withstand such events, however, uncertainties still exist in the estimation of wave ...

rock mass where the in situ state of stress is uniform. The rock mass was assumed to behave elastically and two cases were examined: whether the rock mass has an isotropic elastic property or not. A two-dimensional plain strain elastic-plastic Jointed Rock ...

Rigorously derived shallow water equations (SWEs) are applied to results of large eddy simulation (LES) of a continuously fed gravity current in order to assess (1) sensitivity of current depth results to its definition; (2) coefficients in depth-averaged ...

The geometry and hydrodynamics of river reaches are key ecohydraulic descriptors. Statistics of water depth and velocity measurements are usually taken as proxies for habitat suitability in rivers. However, little is known about the sufficiency of data to ...

Reservoir sedimentation hinders the operation of the Lavey run-of-river hydropower plant (HPP) on the Rhone River in Switzerland. Deposits upstream of the gated weir and the lateral water intake reduce the flood release capacity and entrain sediments into the power tunnel. Past flushing operations of the relatively wide and curved reservoir have been inefficient. To improve sediment management, the enhanced scheme Lavey+ with an additional water intake and a training wall for improving flushing was set up.

Systematic investigations on positive and negative surge waves from upstream have been conducted in a 40 m long channel with a mean bed slope of 1.14? and non-prismatic bank geometries. The channel banks included macro-roughness elements, namely various cavities. In total, 41 different geometrical configurations have been investigated. The surge wave experiments confirmed the applicability of the elementary surge wave theory including secondary waves and wave breaking in the prismatic reference configuratio

The MINERVE project was initiated for flood management in the Upper Rhone river basin. Its first goal is the prediction of floods. The second one is the optimum management of the complex system of hydropower plants located in the basin in order to diminish the peak discharge in the Rhone River and its tributaries. The MINERVE Interactive Decision Support (MINDS) proposes turbine and bottom outlet preventive operations before the flood peak, for having storage volume in the reservoirs during the peak flow. T

Hydropower has a long tradition in Europe, contributing significantly during the first half of the last century to the welfare and industrial development of most countries across the continent. Today, reaching nearly 650 TWh of annual generation in an aver ...
