History shows that the economic prosperity of a society and its cultural wealth has always been closely related to the level of development of its water infrastructure. In view of climate change, especially dams and reservoirs, but also other water infrastructure will and has to play an even more important role than in the past as part of mitigation and adaptation measures that are necessary in order to satisfy vital needs in water, renewable energy and food worldwide. International organizations and nation

The 130 m high Ilarion Dam is built on the Aliakmon River in northern Greece. Its two spillways are equipped with ski jumps to deflect high-velocity jets towards the centre of the plunge pool. Significant scouring occurred in the pool during two major floo ...

The protection of river banks in mountain rivers by riprap requires large blocks with weights typically exceeding 1 t. Thus, the blocks have to be placed individually. Such packed riprap has a relatively small spacing between the blocks. Consequently, the ...

The effect of local drop of wall stiffness in pressurized waterways on the pressure wave speed and the wave attenuation during transients is investigated experimentally. A new signal-processing procedure to identify the presence of a weak reach is introduced and validated by physical experimentation based on assessing the pressure and vibration records acquired at both ends of a multi-reach steel test pipe. Water-hammer was generated by closing a downstream valve, whereas the weak reaches were simulated by

The planning and design of a sustainable reservoir require the accurate prediction of flow and sediment deposition patterns. Numerical simulation of flow in reservoirs is important in order to determine the detailed flow pattern. This typically includes flow separation at the inlet, accompanied by recirculation and stagnation regions. The aim of the present paper is to study the influence of the reservoir geometry on the flow patterns, by means of physical and numerical modelling of the flow behaviour. Diff

In pumped-storage reservoirs, turbulent kinetic energy input from plant operation can be considerably high. Flow velocities were measured by Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers near the intake/outlet structure to describe flow patterns induced by pumped-sto ...

High-head storage hydropower schemes in Alpine areas are required to produce peak energy and to regulate electricity grids. Nevertheless the unsteady turbine operations induce hydropeaking in the river downstream of the powerhouse. The developed hydrological-hydraulic model can simulate glacier melt, snow pack constitution and melt, soil infiltration and run-off as well as hydraulic structures and hydropower schemes. The operation of complex plants and the resulting ecological impact are generated. The mode

The development of a methodology for urban flood adaptation and energy recovery solutions is resting on the concept of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) as a measure to reduce risks of urban flooding while fully utilizing the available resources. F ...

Micro-hydropower is a way of improving the energetic efficiency of existent water systems. In the particular case of drinking water systems, several studies have showed that pressure reducing valves can be by-passed with turbines in order to recover the di ...

Steel-lined pressure tunnels and shafts are used to convey water from the reservoir to the turbines in high-head hydroelectric power plants. An axisymmetrical multilayer model is of-ten considered by engineers for the design of the steel liner. Stresses an ...

This paper presents a comprehensive methodology to model and determine the annual sediment balance of a complex system of interconnected reservoirs, based on the detailed interpretation of a multi-decadal data series of reservoir management and modelling o ...

The sustainable use of reservoirs for irrigation, flood protection, water supply and hydropower may be endangered due to unavoidable reservoir sedimentation. Turbidity currents are the main process for the transport and deposit of sediments in reservoirs, ...

In connection with the ongoing disappearance of glaciers in cold mountains, a great number of new lakes come into existence. The sites and approximate formation time of such potential new lakes can be realistically modelled. This provides an important know ...

The artificial replenishment of sediment is used as a method to re-establish sediment continuity down- stream of a dam. However, the impact of this technique on the hydraulics conditions, and resulting bed morphology, is yet to be understood. Several numer ...

In the framework of an experimental study on the influence of in- and outflow sequences on flow patterns and suspended sediment behavior in reservoirs, flow fields and inflowing jet were sampled by Ultrasonic Velocity Profilers (UVP). The laboratory set-up consisted of two interconnected rectangular basins between which water was moved back and forth. A parametric study was performed on the magnitude and the frequency of in- and outflow cycles. Jet centerline velocities during inflow sequences were measured

Systematic experimental investigations have been performed under steady flow conditions in a channel whose banks are equipped with large-scale rectangular roughness elements. The purpose was to determine the flow resistance owing to such macrorough banks. The practical motivation of the study is to see how morphological restoration of banks in channelized rivers, such as lateral cavities, influences the steady flow characteristics. The experiments performed in 40 different geometrical configurations reveale

Pressure tunnels and pressure shafts are essential components of storage hydropower schemes. Their design necessitates expertise in hydraulic, structural and geotechnical engineering. Accurately modeling the lining-rock system involves accounting for hydraulic-mechanical interactions. This book presents a thorough examination of the design of pressure tunnels and pressure shafts for internal and external water pressures. It addresses the configuration of waterway systems, alignment selection, and types of l

An experimental research of flow on different systems of stepped overlays for 18.6 degrees and 30 degrees slopes was conducted. In addition to define flow characteristics (Part I), the study highlighted the existence of an homogeneous aerated flow in which ...

A physically based engineering model has been developed at the Laboratory of Hydraulic Constructions for the evaluation of the ultimate scour depth of a jointed rock mass due to high-velocity jet impact. The model is based on experimental tests and numerical simulations of water pressure fluctuations at plunge pool bottoms and inside artificially created under-lying rock joints. The water pressures inside the joints revealed to be of highly transient nature, governed by a cyclic change between high peak pre

Reservoir sedimentation is worldwide a problem and requires a sustainable solution. The idea of maintaining sediment in suspension by a jet induced artificial turbulence and releasing it through the water intake was tested in laboratory experiments. Therefore, two jet configurations and the influence of their geometrical parameters and the jet discharge on the sediment release were investigated: (i) a circular jet configuration with four jets arranged in a circle on a horizontal plane and (ii) a linear jet
