Metastable β-Ti alloys exhibiting transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) + twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) generally achieve a good combination of ultimate strength and ductility. However, these alloys often suffer from low yield strength and exhausted hardening capability at later strains due to poor sequential regulation of the TRIP and TWIP effects. Here, we report a TRIP + TWIP metastable β Ti, Ti-9.2Mo-2Al-2Fe (wt. %), exhibiting high yield/ultimate stress of ∼750/1200 MPa and large elongation of

We employ flash infrared annealing to investigate the phase transition of formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI(3)) thin films for their solar cell applications. Measuring the enthalpy changes of the FAPbI(3) composition at different heating rates allows us ...

Laser based heat treatments have multiple applications for local tuning of microstructures. They are particularly relevant in the context of laser-based additive manufacturing (LAM), in order to relieve residual stresses or introduce equiaxed structures th ...

Cu-Be alloys provide excellent electrical and mechanical properties, but present serious health hazards during manufacturing. Among alternative alloys, the Cu-Ti system has the highest yield strength; however, Ti cannot be easily solutionized at concentrat ...

G115 steel has gained a growing interesting recently for its use in next-generation ultra-supercritical power plant applications. Due to the high densities of dislocations and lath martensite boundaries in G115 steel, interactions between solutes and dislo ...

Martensitic crystallography plays a vital role in the texture evolution and mechanical properties in Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloys when subjected to deformation. However, their microstructural changes during deformation are not well known and ...

Two severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques of simple shear extrusion (SSE) and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were employed to process an extruded Mg -6Gd -3Y -1.5Ag (wt%) alloy at 553 K for 1, 2, 4 and 6 passes. The microstructural evolutions ...

It is generally assumed that the parent-twin interface is a fully invariant plane. The calculations of the rational interfaces of the type I twins and irrational interfaces of the type II twins are based on this hypothesis. Recently, some asymmetric facets ...

The grain boundary network evolution of 316L austenitic steel powder during its densification by hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) was investigated. While the as-received powder contained a network of random high angle grain boundaries, the fully consolidate ...

Variant reorientation is a ubiquitous phenomenon in shape memory alloys and has a great influence on their texture and mechanical response. In the present study, a martensitic NiTi rolled sheet is investigated by the electron backscattering diffraction (EB ...

An extruded Mg-6Gd3Y-0.5Ag magnesium alloy was processed by the simple shear extrusion (SSE) technique at 553 K for 1, 2, 4 and 6 passes to refine the microstructure. The electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis was used to investigate the micro ...

The pseudoelastic and pseudoplastic properties of NiTi alloys result from the closeness of the structures between the B2 cubic austenite and the B19' monoclinic martensite, and from the facility to transform one into each other. The paths followed by the a ...

It is established that the annealing twin boundaries of austenite act as nucleation sites for the martensitic transformation. In the present study, we observe that in surface martensite the transformation only takes place for twin boundaries that are appro ...

The features of a (body-centered cubic) structures were investigated in a low-carbon multicomponent alloy from morphological and crystallographic perspectives. In addition to apparent features of granular bainite and lamellar martensite, a morphological si ...

In the past few years, laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) of high entropy alloys (HEAs) has gained significant interest. We investigated a HEA (PdPtRhIrCuNi) elaborated by LPBF, and studied its microstructure and mechanical properties. This alloy has potential ...

The precipitation state of an Al-4 wt% Cu-1 wt% Mg-Ag alloy reinforced with SiC particles fabricated by squeeze casting is studied by transmission electron microscopy. As a consequence of an interfacial reaction the precipitation of the characteristic phases of the unreinforced alloy, Ω and S′, is suppressed and substituted by a new precipitation consisting of isolated nanoscaled rod-shaped precipitates and θ′ plates decorated with a further type of rod-shaped precipitates. These precipitates are the Q-Al5C

A new combination of laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM) and electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) with a field-emission scanning electron microscope (SEM) is utilized to study the mechanism of bainite transformation in reheated low carbon baini ...

Massive transformation, as a non-conventional solid-state phase transformation mode, is scarcely observed in metals with hexagonal closed packed (HCP) structure, especially in Zr and its alloys. In this study, however, we report the massive transformation ...

The β′ and QC rod-shaped precipitates, observed in the Al-Mg-Si and Al-Cu-Mg-Si alloys, respectively, are studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Superstructure images and microdiffraction patterns confirm the likeness between the β′ and QC phases. The microdiffraction patterns are compared with computed ones in the aim to refine a previous structural model based on the existence of a latent disordered phase QP constituted by sub-unit triangular clusters. The space group of the β′ and QC phase is
