Experimental observations and some preliminary results from B2-Eirene code modelling of divertor detachment in the TCV tokamak are reported, with emphasis on the aspects of this detachment related to divertor geometry. The contribution is restricted to deuterium fuelled ohmic plasmas for which the CB drift is directed away from the X-point of lower single-null, open diverted equilibria with fixed elongation and triangularity. Unlike more conventional diverted equilibria, however, the configurations describe

The temporal evolution of the sawtooth crash in ASDEX Upgrade Ohmic and ECRH heated discharges is analysed using a heuristic reconnection model to simulate measured ECE signals. The method turns out to be well suited to detect islands of width above 0.1-0.2 times the mixing radius; for smaller island widths, we cannot distinguish between the resistive and the ideal mode. Thus, the nature of the precursor oscillation cannot be fully resolved. In contrast, we find that during the crash phase, reconnection is

The invention relates to a method and a device for determining plasma characteristics, the method comprising the steps of: - arranging a measurement probe (2) having a self-inductance in proximity to a plasma (3) to establish inductive coupling between the ...

The Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE), hosted at CERN, offers an innovative alternative to conventional radio frequency accelerators. Recent advances have strengthened the feasibility of this technique to provide particle energies relevant to future particle physics experiments [1].

The mechanisms for anomalous transport across the magnetic field are investigated in a toroidal magnetized plasma. The role of plasma instabilities and macroscopic density structures (blobs) is discussed. Examples from a scenario with open magnetic field l ...

The methodology for plasma-turbulence code validation is discussed, with focus on the quantities to use for the simulation-experiment comparison, i.e., the validation observables, and application to the TORPEX basic plasma physics experiment [A. Fasoli , P ...

The effects of plasma shape on confinement and sawtooth stability are studied for positive and negative discharge triangularity and for different elongations with 1.5 MW centrally deposited ECH power

The radial propagation of plasma blobs and possibilities of influencing it are investigated in the TORPEX toroidal experiment [Fasoli et al., Phys. Plasmas 13, 055902 (2006)]. The effect of changing the connection length and the neutral background pressure ...

Fractional Levy motion has been derived from its generalized Langevin equation via path integrals in earlier works and has since proven to be a useful model for nonlocal and non-Markovian processes, especially in the context of nondiffusive transport. Here ...

The effect of ELMS on the vertical position observer in TCV has been investigated and a new, optimized, observer which minimizes the influence of ELMS has been constructed. The new observer has been tested in TCV, under closed loop conditions, and it is shown to be considerably less sensitive to ELMS than the classical observer. In order to determine whether this method could also be used in JET, ELMy H mode discharges and vertical displacement events in JET are analysed and a modified vertical position obs

The energy confinement time of TCV ohmic L mode discharges depends strongly on plasma shape. For fixed average current and electron densities, confinement times increase with plasma elongation and decrease with (positive) plasma triangularity. This dependence can be explained by the geometrical effects of flux surface expansion and compression on the temperature gradients together with the effect of power degradation, without the need to invoke a shape dependence of the transport coefficients. A global fact

Direct current (DC) gas breakdown is experimentally investigated for high-voltage circular conductors and insulators that reproduce the main features of a satellite slip ring. Breakdown voltages are measured in the pressure range 10 ...

A birdcage resonant helicon antenna is designed, mounted, and tested in the toroidal device TORPEX. The birdcage resonant antenna is an alternative to the usual Boswell or half-helical antenna designs commonly used for ∼ 10 cm diameter helicon sources in l ...

We study the bactericidal efficacy of surface dielectric barrier discharge low-temperature plasma treatments, powered by nanosecond high voltage pulses. We achieve similar to 4-log reduction in Escherichia coli population, after 10 min treatments, at a dis ...

Plasma wakefield dynamics over timescales up to 800 ps, approximately 100 plasma periods, are studied experimentally at the Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE). The development of the longitudinal wakefield amplitude driven by a self-modulated proton bun ...

Self-modulation is a beam-plasma instability that is useful to drive large-amplitude wakefields with bunches much longer than the plasma skin depth. We present experimental results showing that, when increasing the ratio between the initial transverse size ...

We designed and built a diagnostic based on a cathodoluminescent screen for the detection of turbulent plasma structures with high spatial resolution. The screen is coated with a low threshold energy cathodoluminescent powder that emits light when exposed ...
