Within the range of plasma shapes and plasma currents investigated, the electron confinement time, tau_Ee, increases with safety factor, density and negative triangularity similar to the Ohmic heating case. There is little dependence of tau_Ee on the heating location provided power deposition occurs inside the q=1 surface; as power deposition moves out of the inversion surface, tau_Ee decreases. The power-induced energy confinement degradation exponent (tau_Ee~PaP) is as usual: alpha_P ~-0.5. As a general t

We show experimentally that an effect of motion of ions, observed in a plasma-based accelerator, depends inversely on the plasma ion mass. The effect appears within a single wakefield event and manifests itself as a bunch tail, occurring only when sufficie ...

Experimental results show that hosing of a long particle bunch in plasma can be induced by wakefields driven by a short, misaligned preceding bunch. Hosing develops in the plane of misalignment, selfmodulation in the perpendicular plane, at frequencies clo ...

Results from an extensive database analysis of JET density profiles in stationary conditions show that the density peaking factor n(e0)/< n(e)> in JET H modes increases from near 1.2 at high collisionality to around 1.5 as the plasma collisionality decreas ...

An interpretation of non-standard, central MHD events in the TCV tokamak during localized ECRH is presented. It is shown that the non-standard behaviour is a consequence of specific features in the electron temperature profile produced when ECRH power is deposited close to the q = 1 surface and by the advection and mixing of electron thermal energy resulting from a resistive MHD instability.

The unique flexibility of TCV in plasma shaping has been exploited to address different aspects of tokamak physics in which the plasma shape may play a role. This paper summarizes the experiments undertaken in the TCV tokamak ("Tokamak à Configuration Variable") over the last decade in stability and transport and offers a comprehensive and integrated view of the various effects of plasma shape observed. For each of these effects, the relation between experimental results and theoretical predictions is stres

Starting from a standard single null X-point configuration, a second order null divertor (snowflake (SF)) has been successfully created on the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) tokamak. The magnetic properties of this innovative configuration have been analysed and compared with a standard X-point configuration. For the SF divertor, the connection length and the flux expansion close to the separatrix exceed those of the standard X-point by more than a factor of 2. The magnetic shear in the plasma edge

We develop a model to investigate the time evolution of the mean location and variance of a random walker subject to Poisson-distributed collisions at constant rate. The collisions are instantaneous velocity changes where a new value of velocity is generat ...

We have designed and installed a new Langmuir-probe (LP) array diagnostic to determine basic three-dimensional (3D) features of plasmas in TORPEX. The diagnostic consists of two identical LP arrays, placed on opposite sides of the apparatus, which provide ...

Blob control by creating convective cells using biased electrodes is demonstrated in simple magnetized toroidal plasmas. A two-dimensional array of electrodes is installed on a metal limiter to obtain different biasing schemes. Detailed two-dimensional mea ...

The article presents experimental and theoretical investigations on the dynamics of saw-teeth and neoclassical tearing modes in tokamak plasmas. The main findings of these investigations are: (1) The experimental validation, on the basis of FTU and TCV data, of a model for the prediction of the sawtooth period and amplitude; (2) the importance of diamagnetic effects in determining the threshold for sawtooth crashes and the rotation of non-linear tearing modes; (3) a clarification of collisionless reconnecti

Context. Narrowband imaging spectropolarimetry is one of the most powerful tools available to infer information about the intensity and topology of the magnetic fields present in extended plasma structures in the solar atmosphere.Aims. We describe the inst ...

We study experimentally the effect of linear plasma density gradients on the self-modulation of a 400 GeV proton bunch. Results show that a positive or negative gradient increases or decreases the number of microbunches and the relative charge per microbun ...

The mechanism for blob generation is detailed in the toroidal magnetized plasma of the TORPEX device [ Fasoli et al., Phys. Plasmas 13, 055902 (2006) ] using an experimental configuration, which features a plasma region dominated by a coherent wave and a r ...

In a magnetized toroidal plasma, an antenna tunable in vertical wave number is used to excite density perturbations. Coherent detection is performed by means of Langmuir probes to directly determine both the wave vector and the plasma response induced by t ...

Cold atmospheric plasmas offer a non-thermal chemical-free technology of bio-decontamination. Compared to their antibacterial effects, the plasma-based antiviral mechanisms remain poorly studied, hampering their promising widespread application. Here, the robust Adeno-Associated Viral (AAV) vector was used as a model to investigate the plasma virucidal effects. AAV inactivation was analyzed by in vitro testing of virus infectivity, vector genome quantification, and vector capsid integrity. It was found that

Plasma-activated water (PAW) is an emerging antimicrobial agent with promising applications in bacterial inactivation. The PAW samples are generated by non-contact exposure of deionized water to a surface dielectric barrier discharge plasma and are charact ...

We report on the first 1D resolved two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF) measurements of atomic hydrogen (H) performed in the Resonant Antenna Ion Device using a picosecond laser system. The results are obtained across a cylindrical plas ...

Helicon wave fundamental properties are explored experimentally and numerically in linear and toroidal geometries in the low-temperature plasma devices RAID and TORPEX. The helicon wave-plasma interaction is studied in terms of wave damping, propagation conditions in toroidal geometry, and nonlinear behavior.
