In this study, we compare the electrical and optical signal transduction of nanoscale biosensors based on single -walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Solution processable single-stranded (ss) DNA-wrapped SWCNTs were used for the fabrication of the distinct s ...

Cantilever-based detection of ultrasmall forces is of great interest for several applications such as magnetic resonance force miscroscopy (MRFM) where an ultrahigh sensitive cantilever is used to detect magnetic resonance in small ensembles of electron or nuclear spins. Detecting the smallest possible forces requires ultrahigh sensitive cantilevers with low spring constant (k < 0.1 mN/m), resonance frequency f > 1 kHz and high quality factor (Q > 30000 in vacuum). Considerable progress has been made in fab

Superconducting resonators are widely used in fields spanning from quantum computing to electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. With the goal of realizing superconducting resonators, a broad variety and combination of superconducting materials, substra ...

We show that double-resonance spectra recorded during the simultaneous absorption of x-ray and microwave (MW) photons are a fingerprint of the perturbed electronic configuration of atomic species driven to ferromagnetic resonance. X-ray absorption measurem ...

Conventional Hall devices are widely employed to measure magnetic fields produced by millimetre sized (or larger) current-caring conductors or permanent magnets with a standard active area of about (100 um)^2. Micro-Hall sensors have recently emerged as a powerful and sensitive tool for the investigation of local magnetic field properties of the micro and nano-structures. The conventional Hall effect devices are based on non-magnetic materials (typically semiconductors e.g: AlGaAs/GaAs and InSb or semimetal

Implantable devices for localized and controlled drug release are important, e.g., for therapies of cancer and chronic pain. However, most of the existing active implants are limited by the usage of nonbiodegradable materials; thus, surgery is needed to ex ...

Self-organizing patterns with micrometer-scale features are promising for applications in photonics and bioengineering. Their spontaneous formation reduces the number of required processing steps. Here, we report an approach to spontaneously form stochastic patterns in thin skin layers on top of thermosensitive resist and an approach to align the micro-wrinkles. The skin layer is generated on top of poly(phthalaldehyde) (PPA) during a plasma etch step. When subsequently heated, the skin layer as well as PPA

We review the theory of ponderomotive forces of classical nonionizing electromagnetic (EM) radiation exerted on dispersive matter. Minkowski's EM energy and momentum density lack any dispersion term in contrast to Nelson's theory, where they are included n ...

We report the development of a continuous-wave and pulsed X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer for the study of spins on ordered surfaces down to cryogenic temperatures. The spectrometer operates in ultra-high vacuum and utilizes a half-wavele ...

Two-dimensional materials (2DM) have emerged as potential candidates for low power electronics, optoelectronics, and sensing [1]. However, the chemical and physical processes involved in conventional lithography methods, have shown detrimental effects on 2DM devices [2,3]. Another bottleneck in the fabrication of 2DM devices is its contact resistance to metals. The characteristic Schottky barrier appearing at the junction between a 2DM and a 3D metallic contact remains a limiting factor in the performance o

Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) is a digital additive manufacturing technique that uses a pulsed laser to transfer various materials from a donor film to a receiver substrate placed in close proximity. In this work, we investigate the transfer of SU- ...

We present a method to measure continuous-wave ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra based on the core-level absorption of circularly polarized x rays. The technique is demonstrated by using a monochromatic x-ray beam incident on an yttrium-iron-garnet sam ...

Bioresorbable implantable medical devices show a great potential for applications requiring medical care over well‐defined periods of time. Once their function is fulfilled, such implants naturally degrade and resorb in the body, which eliminates adverse l ...

We present a fully integrated CMOS receiver for micro-magnetic resonance imaging together with a custom-made micro-gradient system. The receiver is designed for an operating frequency of 300 MHz. The chip consists of an on-chip detection coil and tuning ca ...

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is one of the most powerful and versatile hyperpolarization methods to enhance nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals. A major drawback of DNP is the cost and complexity of the required microwave hardware, especially at ...

We present the design and performance of a broad-band single-chip integrated transceiver specifically conceived for nuclear magnetic resonance magnetometry. The single-chip transceiver is realized using a standard silicon complementary metal-oxide-semicond ...

The science and engineering of two-dimensional materials (2DMs), in particular, of 2D semiconductors, is advancing at a thriving pace. It is well known that these delicate few-atoms thick materials can be damaged during the processing toward their integrat ...

Control of quantum systems typically relies on the interaction with electromagnetic radiation. In this study, we experimentally show that the electromagnetic near-field of a spatially modulated free-space electron beam can be used to drive spin systems, demonstrating free-electron-bound-electron resonant interaction. By periodically deflecting the electron beam of a scanning electron microscope in close proximity to a spin-active solid-state sample, and sweeping the deflection frequency across the spin reso

Superconducting microwave resonators have recently gained a primary importance in the development of cryogenic applications, such as circuit quantum electrodynamics, electron spin resonance spectroscopy and particles detection for high-energy physics and astrophysics. In this work, we investigate the influence of the film thickness on the temperature response of microfabricated Nb50Ti50 superconducting resonators. S-shaped split ring resonators (S-SRRs), approximately 20nm to 150nm thick, are designed to be

Local bandgap tuning in two-dimensional (2D) materials is of significant importance for electronic and optoelectronic devices but achieving controllable and reproducible strain engineering at the nanoscale remains a challenge. Here, we report on thermomech ...
