We demonstrate and validate that concurrent and parallel transmissions are feasible for low data-rate impulse-radio ultrawide band (IR-UWB) physical layers. The optimal organization for a low data-rate IR-UWB network is to allow for concurrent transmissions at the link layer, and to use interference mitigation techniques at the physical layer. Indeed, low data-rate IRUWB physical layers can suffer from multi-user interference (MUI), especially in near-far scenarios. Therefore, we perform an experimental val

By using the polynomial formalism, the gain-bandwidth restrictions will be established in the case of the double broadband matching of an RL generator impedance and an RLC load. By using an automatic procedure based on the Gauss-Newton algorithm, the optimal equal minima gain function will be determined and compared to the Chebyshev and real frequency solutions. It will be shown how the equal minima method can be extended.

Next generation invasive neural interfaces require fully implantable wireless systems that can record from a large number of channels simultaneously. However, transferring the recorded data from the implant to an external receiver emerges as a significant ...

This paper presents a wireless energy transfer and a wireless data communication link for neural signal monitoring-more specifically, fast ripple detection for epilepsy patients. Wireless data are transferred on the same channel as the wireless energy tran ...

Recently there is an increase in interest for using super-regenerative receivers for pulse based communication systems. To receive a pulse using the super-regenerative architecture the pulse needs to be aligned with the zero crossing of the damping co-efficient (which depends on the quench signal) for achieving maximum sensitivity. In general, the pulse to be received is not aligned with the zero crossing of the damping co-efficient. In this paper a novel technique for an automatic alignment of the incoming

Tuning and high frequency capabilities and dynamic range performance of continuous-time oscillators and filters, using the weak inversion operation mode of a low-cost conventional 0.5 μm CMOS technology and multi-tanh linearisation technique are examined. Experimental results in the 1.6 to 19 MHz tuning range are reported.

An ultrasonic on-off keying/amplitude-shift keying demodulator using standard 0.18 mu m CMOS technology is proposed, intended for recovering the identification number of an implanted medical device transmitted from an external base station. The CMOS integr ...

A fast modulator for a dynamic supply linear RF amplifier has been integrated in a 0.35-μm CMOS technology. The use of this modulator with an external linear power amplifier (PA) allows to maintain its efficiency at a higher level than it would with the same PA supplied at constant voltage. The modulator is designed to follow rapid envelope variations at high efficiency without compromising the RF PA linearity.

A system for wireless power transfer of micro-systems in-vivo implantable in small animals is presented. The described solution uses a servo-controlled transmitter moved under the animal moving space. The solution minimizes the power irradiation while enab ...

This paper presents the design and implementation of a 46-kS/s CMOS switch-capacitor dual-mode capacitive sensor interface circuit for inkjet-printed capacitive humidity sensors. The specifications of the interface circuit, which includes a capacitance-to- ...

This paper presents an energy-efficient, duty-cycled, and spinning excitation bridge-to-digital converter (BDC) suitable for measuring the pulmonary artery pressure of heart failure patients with an implantable system. The duty-cycled bridge uses resistanc ...

Low power impulse radio-ultra wide band(IR-UWB) receivers have potential application in the area of wireless sensor networks. In this paper the possibility of super-regenerative receivers for pulse detection is demonstrated. The super-regenerative receiver ...

In this work, we propose an ultra-low power highly configurable analog/mixed-signal (AMS) processor as part of a smart RF signal detection and recognition system focusing on the ISM band. The analog feature extraction approach reduces power consumption and ...

A cardiovascular monitoring system for measuring at least cardiac output comprises an implantable unit (2) configured for placement in a section of artery of a patient and a portable external unit (1) configured for mounting against or close to a patient's ...

This paper presents a novel method for the measure of the cross-sectional area (CSA) of an artery to be used for the direct and continuous (24/7) monitoring of cardiac output (CO). The method is based on the inductance change of an anchoring loop mounted o ...

Inductive power transfer (IPT) is a developing technique for wireless power and data communication systems in the application of implanted medical devices (IMDs). Multiple implants are developed to cover large areas and satisfy the clinical requirements of ...

An implantable system for monitoring vital parameters via bio-sensors inside freely moving laboratory animals and its powering system are presented. The required 2 mW are harvested by the magnetic coupling with an external coil placed under the living spac ...

Multiple techniques are presented to implement an ultra-low-power remotely powered implantable system. The temperature is monitored locally by a thermistor-type sensor. The resistive response of the sensor is amplified and resolved in the time-domain. The ...

Medical implant devices have been widely used in recent years. The Super-Regenerative Receiver has been on preferred architecture due to its power advantage over other architectures. We present a detailed analysis of the circuits and their equivalent model ...

Far-field remotely powered sensor systems enable long distance operation for low-power sensor systems. In this work, we demonstrate a remote powering platform with a miniaturized antenna and remote powering base station operating at 2.45 GHz. The rectenna, ...
