Superconducting power cables are one of the most promising energy applications of high-temperature superconductors, Losses in superconducting power cables are mainly due to AC, thermal and dielectric effects. The interplay of cable geometry, operating conditions, transmitted power, and the resulting losses are considered. The design studies indicate that for Bi-2223 cables with warm dielectric an operating temperature well below 77 K is favoured. For operating temperatures of 45-50 K low-cost Bi-2212 superc

For the new test facility EDIPO (European DIPOle), to be hosted by CRPP, two 18 kA HIS current leads were manufactured and successfully tested. The HTS module, made of AgMgAu/Bi-2223 tapes, is cooled only by heat conduction to the cold end, while the coppe ...

In addition to a reduced number of feeders, which would simplify their integration in the cryostat of the tokamak, the present study considers the possibility to reduce the voltage during safety discharge of the toroidal field (TF) coils. A lowered dischar ...

The use of high temperature superconductors in current leads to reduce the refrigerator power consumption has been investigated in the last few years by many groups. Potential candidates are Y-123 and Bi-2212 bulk material as well as Bi-2223 tapes sheathed with an Ag/Au alloy. In the frame of the European Fusion Technology Programme, FZK Karlsruhe and CRPP Villigen have started a development program for design and construction of a 60 kA current lead for the ITER Toroidal Field Coils. The task composes of t

A. parametric study of the ac loss behavior and the stability of 3 NbTi subsize cable-in-conduit conductors has been performed in the SULTAN test facility. Two of the conductors are distinguished only by the SnAg and the Ni coating of the strands. The effective transverse resistance in the SnAg conductor is considerably. lower than that found for the conductor with Ni coated strands. Hence, the coupling loss in the SnAg coated conductor is considerably higher than, that in the Ni coated conductor. Cyclic lo

State-of-the-art high field solenoids make use of hybrid designs exploiting the superior high field performance of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) in the innermost region. The benefits of a hybrid Central Solenoid in a pulsed tokamak like the EU DEM ...

In the scope of the design activities for a 12.5 T dipole magnet, a short length of cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) with steel jacket was prepared in spring 2005 as a pre-prototype of the high field dipole conductor. The small, rectangular conductor uses ...

MgB2 hollow wires have been produced with a new technique which uses a conventional wire manufacturing process but is applied to composite billets containing the elemental B and Mg precursors in an appropriate shape. The technique has been applied to the manufacture of both monofilamentary and multifilamentary wires of several tens of metres in length. The superconducting transport properties of the MgB2 hollow wires have been measured in a magnetic field and in the temperature range from 4.2 to 30 K. Promi

From February 2007 to May 2008, 18 short length conductor sections have been tested in SULTAN for design verification and manufacturer qualification of the ITER Toroidal Field (TF) conductor. The test program is focussed on the current sharing temperature, ...

Using the SULTAN test facility the d.c. behaviour of three subsize NbTi cable-in-conduit (CIC) conductors has been studied. The d.c. performance of the cables is compared with the critical currents and the current sharing temperatures expected from the strand data. As a basis for this comparison the critical current of the NbTi strands has been measured in the temperature range of 4.2-6.5 K in magnetic fields of up to 7.5 T. The d.c. performance of the NbTi subsize conductors has been found to be not signif

We analyze numerically the training dynamics of deep neural networks (DNN) by using methods developed in statistical physics of glassy systems. The two main issues we address are the complexity of the loss-landscape and of the dynamics within it, and to wh ...

With the first tokamak designed for full nuclear operation now well into final assembly (ITER), and a major new research tokamak starting commissioning (JT60SA), nuclear fusion is becoming a mainstream potential energy source for the future. A critical par ...

In the framework of the conductor optimisation task (CONDOPT) five NbTi subsize cable-in-conduit conductors with parametric variations were fabricated. The DC performance of these conductors tested in the SULTAN test facility [IEEE Trans. Appl. Supercond. 12 (2002) 520] and the strand properties including the voltage-current characteristic, are compared. The results clearly indicate that the current carrying capacity of the conductors is considerably reduced due to the self-field. In conductors with a hinde

Superconductors for the ITER Poloidal Field Coils are large cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) made of NbTi strands encased in a round-in-square stainless steel jacket. Three prototype conductor sections for poloidal field coils PF1/6, PF2/3/4 and PF5 have ...

Recent International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Model Coils and tests on Nb-3 So Cable in Conduit Conductors (CICC) showed a significant and unexpected increase in the broadness of the transition to the normal state, resulting in degradation ...

In the EDIPO test facility, superconducting cables with a current carrying capacity up to 100 kA can be tested in a background field of 12.5 T. A NbTi transformer, operated at ???4.5 K, provides the sample current of up to 100 kA. The high-temperature supe ...

Two short length samples have been prepared and tested in SULTAN to benchmark the performance of high current density, advanced Nb3Sn strands in the large cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) for ITER. The cable pattern and jacket layout were identical to th ...

For the superconducting magnet system of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, ITER, 60 current leads for a total current of more than 2500 kA are needed. To reduce the resultant large refrigerator load at 4.5 K, High Temperature Supercondu ...

A much-needed update on complex high-temperature superconductors, focusing on materials aspects; this timely book coincides with a recent major break-through of the discovery of iron-based superconductors. It provides an overview of materials aspects of high-temperature superconductors, combining introductory aspects, description of new physics, material aspects, and a description of the material properties This title is suitable for researchers in materials science, physics and engineering. Also for techni

An existing Nb3Sn laboratory magnet generating a magnetic field of 12 T is intended to be upgraded to 16 T by means of the use of a high temperature superconductor (HTS) insert coil. An outline design of the HTS insert coil is presented. In the design, the ...
