The purpose of this study was to develop algorithms to lower the incidence of false arrhythmia alarms in the ICU using information from independent sources, namely electrocardiogram (ECG), arterial blood pressure (ABP) and photoplethysmogram (PPG). Our app ...

Early recognition of patients at high risk for atrial fibrillation may help to minimize potential health risks. The detection of susceptibility to develop atrial fibrillation is thus a real clinical challenge. Whereas many studies have used the signal-aver ...

In the present model-based study, the correlation dimension (D2) was used as a measure of the effectiveness of atrial septal pacing during atrial fibrillation (AF). From ongoing simulated atrial fibrillation, instantaneous transmembrane potential maps were ...

This paper explores a novel approach for ventricular and atrial activities estimation in electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, based on sparse source separation. Sparse decompositions of ECG over signal-adapted multi-component dictionaries can lead to natural s ...

Objectives: Rapid pacing of atrial fibrillation (AF) can induce local atrial capture. The present model-based study investigated the impact of atrial tissue conduction velocity on AF capture ability during rapid septal pacing. Methods: The AF model combined a membrane kinetics model with geometry based on computed tomography of AF patients. Conduction velocity was varied ±20% over a baseline AF model based on multiple reentrant wavelets. Rapid pacing of AF was applied from the septum for 50s with pacing cyc

The outcome of stepwise catheter ablation (step-CA) for patients (pts) with long-standing atrial fibrillation (LS-pAF) is poorly predicted by classical organization indices (OI). Our study aims at developing new indices from pre-ablation ECG in order to identify the site of AF termination during step-CA. Methods: 23 consecutive pts (59±7y, AF duration 19±12m) underwent step-CA consisting in pulmonary veins isolation, left atrial (LA) defragmentation, and right atrial (RA) ablations for non terminated AF. Ch

Quantifying the role of atrial ectopic foci in the initiation and the maintenance of atrial fibrillation (AF) is a relevant clinical problem. This study aims at assessing the relation between the activity level of an ectopic focus and the complexity of the ...

We present a model-based study of therapeutical approaches to atrial fibrillation with a focus on pacing. After a systematic evaluation of different atrial pacing sites, we selected pacing from the septum area and designed a novel septum pacing protocol for atrial fibrillation termination. We then evaluated the performance of septum pacing in different models of atrial fibrillation and investigated the effect atrial substrate (cellular properties, anisotropy and heterogeneities) on the ability to capture du

Introduction: Electrical heterogeneity in the atria has been consistently linked with the initiation and perpetuation of atrial fibrillation (AF). The present model-based study investigated the contribution of action potential duration (APD) heterogeneities in the left atrium (LA) and right atrium (RA) on the perpetuation of the reentrant activity during AF. Methods: A computer model with a geometry based on computed tomography of AF patients and a Courtemanche atrial cellular model was implemented. Self-te

Introduction: We hypothesized that organization indices based on the analysis of atrial ECG harmonic components may help identify patients (pts) with persistent AF (pAF) unresponsive to pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) and left atrial (LA) ablation. Using adaptive harmonic frequency tracking schemes, we computed on the atrial ECG: 1) the variance of the phase difference (aPD) between the dominant frequency (DF) and the 1st harmonic (H1), and 2) the organization index (AOI) defined as the ratio of the power of

Aims To present a comparison of electrocardiogram-based non-invasive measures of atrial fibrillation (AF) substrate complexity computed on invasive animal recordings to discriminate between short-term and long-term AF. The final objective is the selection ...

The automatic recognition of human emotions from physiological signals is of increasing interest in many applications. Images with high emotional content have been shown to alter signals such as the electrocardiogram~(ECG) and the respiration among many ot ...

The performance of photoplethysmography (PPG)- based wearable monitors to diagnose atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unknown to date. This study aims at assessing the performance of new indices quantifying the level of organization in PPG signals to diagnose AF. A database made of 18 adult patients undergoing catheter ablation of various cardiac arrhythmias was used. PPG signals were recorded using a wrist-type sensor. A 12-lead ECG was used as gold standard. ECGs were annotated by experts and selected segme

Objective. Cardiac arrhythmias are a leading cause of mortality worldwide. Wearable devices based on photoplethysmography give the opportunity to screen large populations, hence allowing for an earlier detection of pathological rhythms that might reduce th ...

This study was undertaken to determine the ability of different markers extracted from single lead ECG recorded in sinus rhythm to identify patients prone to atrial fibrillation (AF). For this purpose, 5-minute ECGs recorded in sinus rhythm from two populations were compared: patients with a history of AF and healthy subjects without any history of AF. Several features based on P-waves and RR-intervals were extracted from the ECG. Among the extracted features, the most discriminative ones to identify the AF

In spite of the progress in management of Atrial Fibrillation (AF), this arrhythmia is one of the major causes of stroke and heart failure. The progression of this pathology from a silent paroxysmal form (PAF) into a sustained AF can be prevented by predic ...

The Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a recording of the electrical potentials generated by brain activity on the scalp. It has been used for decades as a non-invasive tool both in fundamental brain research and in clinical diagnosis. But it is now widely used also in Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) to provide augmentative communication mainly for severely handicapped patients and, prospectively, in the general framework of human computer interaction. As in any communication system, the input (EEG activity) mus

Recent advances in wearable technologies integrating multi-modal sensors have enabled the in-field monitoring of several physiological metrics. In sport applications, wearable devices have been widely used to improve performance while minimizing the risk o ...

Adaptive tracking of sinusoidal signal components with time-varying amplitudes and frequencies presents a great interest in many engineering applications. In many cases, the frequency components of interest are present in more than one signal. So we propos ...

The anaerobic threshold (AT) is a good index of personal endurance but needs a laboratory setting to be determined. It is important to develop easy AT field measurements techniques in order to rapidly adapt training programs. In the present study, it is po ...
