A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a communication system that translates brain activity into commands for a computer or other devices. In other words, a BCI allows users to act on their environment by using only brain activity, without using peripheral nerves and muscles. The major goal of BCI research is to develop systems that allow disabled users to communicate with other persons, to control artificial limbs, or to control their environment. An alternative application area for brain-computer interfaces

The termination of long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation (LS-pAF) can be achieved by stepwise catheter ablation (step-CA) within the left atrium (LA). Our study aims to applying complexity measures derived from nonlinear time series analysis in orde ...

The potential of imaging photoplethysmography for cardiovascular monitoring applications has been demonstrated recently. Various processing schemes have been proposed to extract heart rate (HR) from a defined region of interest (ROI) on the face. However, the reasons that motivate the choice of the ROI are often unclear. This study aimed at investigating the spatial distribution of the HR-related information on the subject face, based on a partition into 260 small ROIs. A power spectral density (PSD) analys

This study presents an automatic diagnostic method for the discrimination between persistent and long-standing atrial fibrillation (AF) based on the surface electrocardiogram (ECG). Standard 12-lead ECG recordings were acquired in 53 patients with either p ...

Purpose: Non-invasively predicting the success of pharmacological cardioversion for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) would be of great interest in clinical settings. In this study, an adaptive algorithm for tracking fundamental and harmonic component ...

Background Impaired heart rate variability (HRV) is associated with increased mortality in sinus rhythm. However, HRV has not been systematically assessed in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We hypothesized that parameters of HRV may be predictive o ...

Purpose Multiple organization indices (OIs) have been used to predict the outcome of stepwise catheter ablation (step-CA) in long-standing persistent AF (pers-AF), however with limited success. Our study aims at developing innovative OIs from baseline (BL, ...

Repolarization Alternans and Atrial Remodeling Introduction Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) may be triggered by intermittent atrial tachycardia, and ultimately lead to persistent AF. However, the mechanisms by which intermittent atrial tachycardia prom ...

Enhanced sensation of reality from multimedia contents can be achieved by creating realistic multimedia environments, using visual, auditory, and olfactory information. Although the affective information from video and audio has been extensively studied, t ...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) affects millions of people worldwide and needs to be diagnosed in its early stage to provide proper treatment. However, the numerous wearable devices available today are not yet able to discriminate AF episodes from other cardiac a ...

Purpose: multiple organization indices (OIs) have been used to predict the outcome of stepwise catheter ablation (step-CA) in long-standing persistent AF (pers-AF), however with limited success. Our study aims at developing innovative OIs from baseline (BL, before ablation) ECG in order to predict the outcome of step-CA. Methods: fourteen consecutive patients (pts) (60±5 y, AF duration 21±9 m) underwent a step-CA consisting in pulmonary veins isolation, left atrial (LA) defragmentation and linear ablations,

Background High values of ECG and intracardiac dominant frequency (DF) are indicative of significant atrial remodeling in persistent atrial fibrillation (peAF). We hypothesized that patients with peAF unresponsive to ablation display higher ECG and intraca ...

Introduction: Stepwise radiofrequency catheter ablation (step-CA) has become a treatment of choice for the restoration of sinus rhythm (SR) in patients (pts) with long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation (pers-AF). Its success rate appears limited as the amount of ablation to achieve long term SR is unknown. Recently, intracardiac organization indices (OI) of AF have been used to track the efficiency of step-CA, with limited success. Our study is aimed at developing new OIs based on the relationships be

We present a method that exploits an information theoretic framework to extract optimized audio features using the video information. A simple measure of mutual information (MI) between the resulting audio features and the video ones allows to detect the active speaker among different candidates. Our method involves the optimization of an MI-based objective function. No approximation is introduced to solve this optimization problem, neither concerning the estimation of the probability density functions (pdf

Evidence from neuroscience and psychology supports the idea that synchronization among various sub-components of the organism is the key-point to emotional processes. This study investigates the way signals from the central nervous system interact with sig ...

While successful termination by pacing of organized atrial tachycardias has been observed in patients, rapid pacing of AF can induce a local capture of the atrial tissue but in general no termination. The purpose of this study was to perform a systematic e ...

Atrial activation (AA) detection during atrial fibrillation (AF) can be considered as a first step in estimating AF characteristics such as the AF cycle length. The detection of AA from intracardiac electrograms (EGM) remains challenging due to the constan ...

Various time- and frequency-based approaches have been proposed to measure baroreflex sensitivity. All these methods are block-based ones. This study proposes a novel instantaneous measure of baroreflex sensitivity that enables the investigation of frequen ...

Background: Signal processing tools are required to efficiently analyze data collected in body-surface-potential map (BSPM) recordings. A limited number of such tools exist for studying persistent atrial fibrillation (persAF). We propose two novel, spatiot ...

Purpose: Intracardiac organization indices (OI) have been used to track the efficiency of stepwise radiofrequency catheter ablation (step-CA) of persistent atrial fibrillation (pers-AF). A better understanding of the components and complexity of AF electro ...
