This paper deals with a software package for the numerical analysis in transient and steady-state modes of power electrical networks or variable speed drives with arbitrary topologies. The package is composed of a series of units, each representing a specific cell in the network : voltage supply, electrical machine, mechanical system, transmission line, circuit-breaker, phase shifting transformer, static converter with control and command organ, regulator, etc. SIMSEN is highly flexible and efficient. It is

For many years the EPFL Laboratory for Electrical Machines develops SIMSEN, a numerical software package for the simulation in transient and steady-state conditions of electrical power systems and adjustable speed drives, having an arbitrary topology. SIMS ...

Numerical simulations of the transient operation of an islanded power network subject to load rejections are performed. The islanded power network case study consists of a 1-GW hydroelectric power plant featuring four generating units, a long penstock, and ...

At low flow rate operation, Francis turbines feature a cavitating vortex rope in the draft tube resulting from the swirling flow of the runner outlet. The unsteady pressure field related to the precession of the vortex rope induces plane wave propagating i ...

An analytical approach allowing modelling transient phenomena in pipes, valves, surge tanks and Francis turbines based on impedance method is developed. These models are implemented in a software called “SIMSEN”, which simulates the behaviour of complex applications in the domain of adjustable speed drives and electrical power networks. This program is based on a modular structure, which enables the numerical simulation of transient modes of systems exhibiting arbitrary topologies. The numerical simulation

An analytical approach allowing modelling transient phenomena in pipes, valves, surge tank and Francis turbines based on impedance method is developed. These models are introduced in a software called “SIMSEN”, which simulates the behaviour of complex appl ...

The present paper investigates transient overvoltages on ac induction motors when connected through a cable of arbitrary length to IGBT-PWM inverters. Considering classical transmission line analysis, and traveling-wave analysis with zero initial charges o ...

This paper presents a numerical simulation study of the transient behavior of a 2x340MW pump-turbine power plant, where the results show an unstable behavior at runaway. First, the modeling of hydraulic components based on equivalent schemes is presented. ...

This paper presents the modeling, simulation and analysis of the dynamic behavior of a fictitious 2times320 MW variable speed pump-turbine power plant including hydraulic system, electrical equipments, rotating inertias and control systems using the softwa ...

This paper presents the modeling, simulation and analysis of the dynamic behavior of a mixed islanded power network of 780 MVA comprising hydro, thermal and wind power plants. The modeling of each power plant is fully described. The model of the variable speed pump-turbine unit includes hydraulic system, electrical equipments, rotating inertias and control systems. The power plants are connected to five passive consumer loads via a 500 kV electrical line network. First, the capability of the pumped storage

The Laboratory of Electrical Machines of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Lausanne) has developed a software (TLSim) for the simulation of electrical urban transportation systems. This program can simulate the behaviour of the power supply network (current and voltage level at any point of the topology) comprising uni- and bi- directionnal sub-stations. In the network the vehicules (trolleybus) may run along any defined path through different electrical supply sectors. Several models of trolleybus

Models of hydraulic components based on impedance method have been implemented in a software called “SIMSEN”. This tool allows the simultaneous solution of the electrical, hydraulic, mechanic and control equations ensuring a proper interaction between the four parts of a system. In this paper the interaction between hydraulic and electric part of 2 Francis turbines power plant is investigated by comparing the simulation results obtained with and without coupling hydraulic and electric phenomena. Using hydra

Hydroelectric power plants are known for their ability to cover variations of the consumption in electrical power networks. In order to follow this changing demand, hydraulic machines are subject to off-design operation. In that case, the swirling flow lea ...

This paper deals with a combined analytical-numerical approach for the study of the steady-state and transient behaviour of three-phase transformers. This approach based on magnetic equivalent circuits, takes into account the nonlinear B-H curve. The nonli ...

In large cities, due to expensive land price, high-rise buildings are built, in which the space dedicated to the elevators is considerable and reduces the rented surfaces. To decrease these lost surfaces, a multi mobile system is proposed. It consists of s ...

The present paper deals with a new approach for the study of the steady - state and transient behaviour of three- phase transformers. This approach based on magnetic equivalent circuit diagrams, takes into account the nonlinear B-H curve as well as zero-se ...

A combined analytical and FEM method for prediction of the no-load voltage waveform of laminated salient pole synchronous generators is presented in this article. Very precise prediction of the no-load voltage, including saturation effects as well as the e ...

It is possible to determine the types and values of stator and rotor errors in magnetic circuits in a synchronous machine by measuring the induced voltage (ui) for the terminals of measurement loops (2) which can capture an image of the induction in the measurement gap, then by treating said signals.

In industrial variable speed drives, the supply of low voltage induction motors by IGBT-PWM inverters through screened cables may cause dangerous over-voltage surges at the motors terminals. These voltage peaks of about twice the de link voltage, with a short rise time of about 200 nsec, increase the armature insulation stress and may damage the motor insulation. The prsent study provides a theoretical approach to this matter and is completed by tests performed on two 3 and 7.5 kW drives, with different cab

Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) are systems based on power electronics using GTO or IGCT semiconductors [1] that allow a better use of the transfer capacities of the transmission lines and permit to satisfy the requirements due to the liberalization of the electrical energy market. The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is one of the most versatile topologies of the FACTS family. The UPFC can be decomposed in two different power circuits: the parallel one maintaining the network bus voltage by co
